UAW Union Bosses Abusing Positions for Pay

TV News 4 in Detroit did an excellent expose on a few union bosses that routinely rip off the unions and the auto makers they work for with fake time cards and paid for but unworked overtime pay.

One of the bosses, Ron Seroka, a union job security officer, takes off half a day nearly everyday to go home to lounge around the house while he is on the clock. Seroka punches in at the plant at 6AM every single day and is home by 11:30 AM for some nice leisure time at home. Yet he gets a steady 10 hours pay every single day despite the fact that he is rarely at work.

Seroka’s union boss is even worse. Union chairman Jim Modzelewski buys beer on a daily basis while on the clock and clocks himself in for overtime pay hours before he even wakes up to go into the plant. TV 4 found that after he punches in, he typically leaves for a beer run mere hours later. Again, all this is on a daily basis. He is also paid overtime pay on a daily basis as he sits home drinking his daily beer. With over 2,500 hours of overtime, Modzelewski made a six-figure salary last year. TV 4 also discovered that Modzelewski even played in a bowling tournament while on the clock — as at overtime pay, too!

Together, just these two union chiefs clocked in over 3,500 hours of overtime pay for the year. Makes one wonder how many union bosses are abusing their positions this way, doesn’t it?

The TV news also briefly interviewed an auto business expert that says in the last ten years one in three American union auto workers would not show up to work on any given day while foreign auto plants would see 98 out of 100 of their workers dutifully show up for work. Makes it a bit hard to plan on a work force in the US with unions in control, doesn’t it?

This report is just one more example of how auto workers unions are one of the big reasons that American auto plants are ineffectual, inefficient, and cannot compete with foreign makers. Not only that, but it reveals that union bosses have no accountability and flaunt their criminal and immoral actions with impunity wasting millions of dollars as they do it.

Nice work TV 4.

You'll find public employees like that in every Blue State

and city in the Country. The union play is they start all this “collaborative” stuff and rant on how both the employer and the union have an equal interest in effective contract administration. So, they get weak-minded managers to go along with lots of time off for union officers and stewards and in many jurisdictions even paid employer time for the union’s officers and staff. And, of course, that important work can’t be done in the mere 7.5 or 8.0 hr. normal shift, so the union rep gets a guaranteed ten or twelve hoiur day, and the higher ranking ones get a guaranteed six or seven 10s or 12s. So, when you figure all time over forty is time and a half under federal law and many states or labor agreements also give time and a half over 8 hr./dy. You’ve really won the lottery of life when you’re guaranteed 12s and can claim a holiday worked: you get time worked at 8 straight and 4 at time and a half, you get 8 straight as holiday pay, maybe even 12 under some agreements, and you get an additional 12 at time and a half for holiday worked premium pay. That’s a lot of money for a day you never even came near the jobsite.

This is the stuff that has killed the automakers. They didn’t care what their labor costs so long as everybody was on the same pattern, so they agreed to all this crazy crap. No responsible employer would agree to pay a bunch of union officials who are openly and notoriously simply parasites, yet every unionized private employer does some of it and almost every unionized public employer does it.

While Alaska’s State workforce is mostly unionized, we have not been a particulary “union friendly” employer except for a while during the Knowles Administration. Even for an employer that tries to act like a responsible employer dealing with union reps is maddening at times because they have fairly strong legal protections. Linked is a memo setting out Alaska’s policies in dealing with them. I have no illusions that these policies are universally enforced and always assumed that the union reps could do pretty much anythign they wanted so long as nobody from headquaters is looking. during the Obama years.

Many Americans are uninitiated in all the ways that union bosses skim money and do other slimy things.

Now that we taxpayers are footing the bill for fixing problems that unions helped mightily to cause, I suspect that more and more Americans will demand explanations for shenanigans like this. Because we’re being asked to fund these shenanigans.

Practices like this can flourish outside of the public spotlight. I hope that Redstate does all it can to shine the bright lights on practices like these.

I suspect that lots of uniion bosses will do the same thing that rats do when the light shines on them…scurry for cover.

legalized extortion

Janice Cantore Sunday, December 28th at 1:50PM EST (link)

Everyone who belongs to a union knows these kind of things go on. Most galling to me were the worthless employees always protected by the union. Blatant laziness and incompetence that made everyone look bad was never a cause for dismissal, it usually meant promotion, thanks to the union. As a sixteen year union member one thing that frightened me more than Obama being elected was the amount of money unions spent to get him elected. That kind of money is staggering. If I were still in the union, some of it would have been mine, against my numerous objections. Nothing will change if unions can continue to spend all of their money in this fashion, like the incompetent employees they protect, the corrupt politicians will stay in power. God help us if card check passes.

The real illegality with these two employees

Achance Sunday, December 28th at 2:03PM EST (link)

is that their status is clearly extortion and a way to get around the plain language prohibition in the Labor-Management Relations Act of an employer making a direct payment to a union. It would be illegal, assuming some DA would bring it, for Ford to directly pay the “Job Security Officer” of UAW, so both sides pretend that he’s actually doing some job of Ford, but he’s really only being paid as a union officer. I’d be willing to bet he never touches the line; you couldn’t keep the line running with someone who can come and go as he pleases, and that he has an office somewhere in the plant where he thinks deep thoughts about job security - his.

up unions (Longshoreman, UAW) are less subtle regarding intimidation during negotiations. I.E. finding the windows of your car smashed and seats slashed with a razor, broken windows in your house, child beaten up at school, etc. At least that’s the drill here in NYC.

I could cure the union problem and not even be mean or harsh. No union would be able to represent the workers of more than one company and there would be no public unions.

The public is not an oppressive employer, so our workers don’t need to unionize to protect themselves against us.

Private employers can be oppressive, but they can’t oppress workers at other factories. Therefore, the union should only be allowed to represent the workers for that employer and no other.

There could be a UFW (for Ford), a UGMW (for GM), etc. but there couldn’t be any union representing the workers at competing companies.

The problem with America is stupidity. I’m not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why don’t we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

They need to unionize to protect Democrats

Achance Sunday, December 28th at 5:46PM EST (link)

against us. That’s what public sector unionization is all about; they’re the Storm Trooper wing of the Democrat Party.

In the private sector, they only have about 8% of the workforce, actually less than they had in ‘32 before passage of the National Labor Relations Act. All of those “legacy industries” either have a lot of government financed work, heavy public construction, a lot of government permitting, heavy private construction or they are heavily regulated by the government, e.g., health care, airlines, utilities, or they have the government as a primary customer, e.g., defense, aerospace, shipbuilding, See the commonality there? The union and the company actually work together to get more influence over and money from government.

That's the problem

Warner Todd Huston Monday, December 29th at 7:02AM EST (link)

That’s the problem, unions are strongest in government. A unionized government work force is antithetical to good government.
