America has always had a great tradition, one mature for it’s age and true at birth, of the peaceful turnover of power from one faction to another. Never have Americans rioted when a president of another party took his seat in the White House, never has the military been called in and never has government been wholly shut down during the turnover of power because of political strife and unrest. This is, it cannot be denied, a good thing. It is one of the things that makes the USA’s unique among the history of nations. But, does this relative good sense include the necessity of one party giving the new president of the opposing party “a chance” once he takes office? As Republicans, are we obliged to sit back and allow a new president we opposed — in this case Barack Obama — the opportunity to do anything and everything he so pleases? Is this what is meant by “giving him a chance”?
I’ll have to politely say “no” is the answer to that question. Republicans are under no obligation to chuck all principles to the four winds in some mistaken notion of giving Barack Obama “a chance” to do whatever it is he wants to do in office. We have no reason to sit back and do nothing just because “the people have spoken.” To that, it must be pointed out that none of our members of “the people” spoke in Obama’s favor.
Further, let’s face history, here. No party after having lost the majority has ever just sat back and ceased all forms of resistance in the face of what amounts to the enemy taking power. In fact, no party should ever do so. Why have more than one party in the first place if no resistance is the goal? Why not just manufacture a permanent “era of good feelings” in that case? No, the concept is more properly one of settling in as the “loyal opposition,” not that of rolling over and playing dead.
Who can doubt that the Democrat Party has never obligated itself to be under any such restriction? Who doubts that the Democrat Party never gave George W. Bush a single second’s rest from the day he ran for the White House despite that he offered them his hand in friendship at the outset — and had a history back in Texas of doing so? Similarly, the Democrat Party did its level best to destroy Ronald Reagan at every opportunity from day one quite despite the landslide victory he won. And Nixon? Please.
In fact, we are already seeing the way the left plans to treat all things Republican before Obama has even fairly taken the oath of office. For instance, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is trying to re-write House rules to take as much influence as possible away from House minority Republicans, even though the Republicans are the ones responsible for creating the rules that offered the other side a modicum of influence on debate in the first place. So much for common decency there!
Even Obama’s own gegaw website operations are indulging in immature, hateful, anti-Republican efforts. On Obama’s USAService.org site, an entry for a public event is listed as an opportunity for fans of Obama to “celebrate” his ascendancy by having a “Bush Shoe Toss.” Now, this USAService website is supposed to be one where average, everyday Americans can find local opportunities to give “service” to the community. How a partisan hate event like a “Bush shoe toss” lends service to the community is anyone’s guess. But, here is Obama’s own little jimjack of a website lending its name to this childish hatemongering just the same.
Very grown up of you, Barack.
Now as David Oatney, a friend of mine from Tennessee, argued on a recent podcast on which I was invited to participate, that the argument might be made that, as adults raised to be courteous, we are obligated out of mere good manners alone to “give Obama a chance.”
I replied to the concept that I was not so obligated. On the podcast, I was not able to explain in much depth why I felt that way and I would like to remedy that here.
First we can begin with Obama’s own actions. Obama has built a mythic reputation — and I say mythic in the sense of a tale built on falsehood — of being one that will, and/or has, “reached across the aisle” to “get things done.” In actual truth, Obama has little reaching across the aisle in evidence during his career. He has never compromised on any of his ideas, has never leaned toward the middle to work with Republicans, and he has never initiated any reaching across the aisle on any substantive issue that Republicans already didn’t wholly agree with what he wanted done (in other words, their coming HIS way, not him leaning theirs). In short, his reputation of “reaching across the aisle” is a fantasy.
Obama has even shown that he isn’t too interested in the opinions of his own comrades in Congress if his surprise pick of the experience-free Leon Panetta for head of the CIA is any evidence.
Additionally, we cannot even rely enough on what Obama claims are his political principles to consider allowing him a free hand. For instance, Obama based his entire campaign on the “change we need” often defined as the end of the influence of lobbyists in Washington. Yet, since winning office, Obama has thrown that aversion to lobbyists out the window, signaling to them that he is now open to their cash-laden entreaties.
In fact, he is also installing them in both low and high positions in his administration. Just this week Obama announced that he has picked William Lynn for the position of deputy defense secretary despite that the man has been a lobbyist for the military industrial complex as a senior vp for defense contractor Raytheon Industries.
From his current actions and his actions historically, we can see that Obama feels it is his way or the highway and if Republicans sit back to give Obama “a chance” they will quickly find him stepping on their faces as opposed to walking beside them. He is simply not a man to be trusted to rule unopposed.
There is a second point here that I alluded to above, as well. It is the one called principles. We opposed Obama’s election not just because he was not from our party. We opposed him because we stand wholly against the very ideas and principles that he holds dear. We are against socialism, against the elimination of free trade, and against turning the fight against terror into a police action. We do not agree with Obama’s concept that everyone on the planet should be covered under the U.S. Constitution nor are we enamored with allowing the UN to program our foreign policy. We hate the idea of abortion on demand and the sort of infanticide that Barack Obama has himself repeatedly voted for. We stand foursquare against further bloating our government as well as his plans of eliminating our Second Amendment rights. We agree with almost nothing that Barack Obama wants to impose on this country.
All that being true, why in God’s name would we be so foolish as to sit back and allow him free reign in some misbegotten sense of “fairness”?
And, in truth, it isn’t “fairness” to allow him to run rough shod over every ideal we have simply because he won the office. It is neither “fair” to the nearly 50% of the American electorate that did not vote for the man, nor is it “fair” to the principles and ideals of the Founding Fathers to allow him to wipe out their hard won victories. It also isn’t “fair” to those Republicans currently in office that have their own plans and ideas to implement as representatives of their districts back home.
In the end, there is no reason to sit idly by and give Obama “a chance” to destroy everything we hold dear. We should oppose every move he makes with which we do not agree. Certainly there is no reason not to seek consensus when we can, compromise if we must. And absolutely we have no need to be uncivil at debate. But we are under no obligation to roll over and play dead for him.
After all, he never has.
So, let’s be done with this gauzy talk of “giving Obama a chance.” Let us proudly accept the mantle of the party of no. To mangle Buckley, let us resolve to stand athwart the Obama juggernaut, yelling STOP!

He's got one chance.......

Out of politeness, we have the obligation to be polite, nothing more.
We also have the obligation to oppose him, but not JUST because he wants something, that way lies the unhinged - witness the last 8 years, nothing Bush proposed was good - even when it was. He was fought every inch just because he wanted it. Now Obama’s thinking about (effectively) partially privatizing Social Security - and lo and behold, the Ds think it might be a good idea. I think it’s a good idea anyway, I’ll support it no matter who’s in charge.

mbecker908 Saturday, January 10th at 1:53PM EST (link)He won’t be any worse.
Obama, IMO, will be an overt threat to our national security and may well set us on a near-irreversible course by cutting the size and effectiveness of our military, promoting the accursed State Department view of policy vis Israel & the ME in general and the proposition that we should be more involved with the UN and the EU on policy matters.
You’re absolutely right that we only have one foreign policy and that it is conducted by POTUS. However, we should undertake to do everything politically possible to paint the picture that BO is an empty suit who completely out of touch with international reality and a manifest danger to the American people.
As far as him being “perceived as weak”, he should be. He is. And he will pursue policies that will undercut our national security. He should be forestalled from being able to do that. If making an international laughingstock of him is what’s required, we should do it. I can’t think of a single action, short of assassination, that shows him to be a weak, despicable excuse for a man, a complete empty headed empty suit and a danger to not just the US but to world peace in general that I wouldn’t support. If it came down to the fact that we’d been able to destroy him to the point where world leaders would ask him to stay home and would refuse to visit the WH I’d celebrate.
I’m not mad at the world and my son is world class chef so I have no problem with my food and I certainly have no problem wanting to share it. Thanks for your latest example of off-point lawyer crap.
What I am is very concerned for the future of my nation and I hold the view that hindering Obama’s ability to conduct foreign policy is our patriotic duty.
I would prefer Biden, but let's address the reality of BHO
Mike gamecock DeVine Saturday, January 10th at 2:01PM EST (link)We should paint the picture of Obama based on what he says and does as President and if he exudes weakness to our enemies, then we should let the world and American voters know that if they would return power to us, that we will be strong. But we shouldn’t go out of our way to make him look weak and we should do all we can to strengthen him.
Weakness invites aggression and I don’t want the GOP to be responsible for weakening the President for political reasons. And I want to limit his weakness no less Americans are killed.

And for that reason we should be doing everything possible to let the rest of the world know that we too know he’s an empty suit and we will not stand for him sell out our national interest.
Nothing we can do will weaken BO. That’s the equivalent of feeding me a double whopper to slow me down before fighting Mike Tyson.
We should be about the business of demonstrating every day that he does not have the support of all Americans and that his policies are wrong and dangerous. I absolutely do not want him to be successful in any sense of the word. My goal would be to have the name “Obama” forever linked to failure. I’d be happy if he was specifically told by Democrats to not attend future conventions.

My bottom line is simple Mike
mbecker908 Sunday, January 11th at 5:02PM EST (link)there is no risk in stating the obvious. The risk is in pretending it isn’t really obvious. In recovery it’s called “the elephant in the room”. And it isn’t going to go away.
Two examples: Jimmy Carter. His bumbling foreign policy gave us the middle east problems we’ve got today. (Reagan had a couple of chances to fix the problem - Beirut Marine Corps bombing & IDF having PLO bottled up in a fight to the death - and blew those.) Bill Clinton. Let’s prosecute terrorist instead of killing the bastards set the stage for 911.
In neither case would Republicans have made the situation worse by going for the throat over completely inept policy decisions. We didn’t and we’re paying the price and will continue to pay it.
Perhaps, and only perhaps, BO would defend us in the event of a major attack on US soil. A minor attack, a series of minor attacks, or an overseas attack on US interests will be pretty much ignored.

I wholeheartedly disagree, GC...
rbdwiggins Saturday, January 10th at 2:05PM EST (link)Any supply-side stimulus that Pelosi “allows” to be introduced as part of a comprehensive stimulus package will be, by design, overwhelmed by the socialist policies contained within the final product. There’s a high probability that, if included, the supply-side component of the final product will not be recognizable.
The Democrat’s stimulus package is destined to fail before it’s even enacted because it relies on the power of government instead of sound economic policies.
Republican “compromise” will only afford political cover to the democrats for their abject failure. Compromise will not mitigate the damage to our constitutional republic, and our economy will likely become much worse than doing nothing.
“Well, the trouble with our liberal friends is not that they are ignorant, but that they know so much that isn’t so.” – Ronald Reagan
Ok, rbd, let's be clear on what will be in the stimulus bill
Mike gamecock DeVine Saturday, January 10th at 2:27PM EST (link)I just called Obama and got him to blackberry the details!
Here is what I am saying.
If the stimulus is limited to tax cuts and public works, then we should deal. We must filibuster any attempt to put cap and trade, socialized medicine, Ayers education reform, etc out at all costs!!!!! This is our main duty. We can beat that crap in a debate like we did Amnesty and we van get blue dogs.
So, lets say the bill is public works and tax cuts.
Well, governments do have to fix and build roads, bridges, etc and so why not accelerate it.
But we also make clear that Obama promised jobs and not just for lawyers and highlight the job killing trial lawyers and ESA law for those Obama voters that want jobs.
We can make major political points with this while the electorate is attentive.
So, there is nothing inherently socialistic for government to build public works. They are, after all, PUBLIC works.
Now, to the tax cuts.
They are going to happen. There are worse things than “middle class” tax cuts!!!! OK?
Yes, they are too large and not the kind that produce growth, but hey, I’m for any tax cut, any time a dem will agree.
Now, to the issue of those that will get a check that don’t pay “federal” taxes.
Is that socialism? Maybe. But so is social security, and the overwhelming majority of people that work
(and let’s not forget, that to get the tax cut, you have to work)
pay FICA, and last I checked there is no lock box and its a federal program.
I just wrote a blog (and Steve Forbes and increasingly more conservatives agree) that we should not call the tax cuts welfare for those that don’t pat fed income tax but do pay FICA.
It is an insult to tell a working person that they are on welfare.
But I digress (but we would appreciate if you would read my blog on it and comment!)
Now, we have every reason to expect that Obama is going to accept some supply side tax and reg cuts based on his recent statements and his recent inclusion of some accelrated depreciation provisions and the views of his advisors.
So all I am saying is that under these circumstances, we might be able to catually get some provisions in the bill that would actually help the economy to recover and that must be job 1.
Now, it may be that given the size of the bill that it would be a net negative. I don’t deny that. But I haven’t reached a conclusion yet. There is no bill yet and I want to see the debate and study on it.
especially your thought my man!!
god bless

rbdwiggins Saturday, January 10th at 3:31PM EST (link)But these are the same people who aren’t satisfied with just letting the Bush Tax Cuts expire. They want to accelerate their soak the rich scheme and punish whole industries the left deems to be politically incorrect.
There’s almost no chance, as in freezing over first, Pelosi and her minions will allow open debate or the introduction of meaningful tax reform and deregulation. A rebate check to those who do not pay federal income tax does not in any way qualify as a supply-side component. It’s income redistribution, it’s socialist policy and it’s wrong for America.
Once a snake, always a snake.
Even if, by some miraculous cosmic event, the dem’s stimulus package, loaded with “compromise,” should actually work, the Republican Party will get no credit whatsoever.

However, if it crashes and burns the economy and the Repub’s voted for it, it will be bi-partisan failure and everyone had good intentions but it didn’t work. The damage will be scapegoated and neutralized by the Repub vote. The Democrats walk away clean for their disaster.
Look at what happened in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. We had the video of the Democrats protecting and defending Franklin Raines and the cooked books. We had video of Republican’s saying this was going to blow up and melt down if it wasn’t fixed. I will give you one guess how much it mattered in laying blame for the financial mess!
If there is one Republican who votes for this other than Johnny Mac, the blame will laid on the Repubs and the Democrats walk away clean. The media will see to that.
The Republican lose either way. There only safe vote is to keep out of it and away from it! The only decision remaining is if to be vocal about it. That is all there is to decide. The MSM and Democrats will toast them if they are too vocal and it succeeds, but I highly doubt its success.

Wubbies World Saturday, January 10th at 5:26PM EST (link)If you did, you watched the stock market tank the longer he talked.
The only way your going to get investors to go off strike is by the government doing nothing. That isn’t going to happen. The longer the Democrats keep trying to repair the economy with demand side economics, the investors will stay on the sidelines.
Yes we need supply side stimulus, as long as the Democrats get Johnny Mac to go along so there is not filibuster, what are the chances they give a rat’s behind about what Republicans want, except for some cover with votes.
The thing here is that the Democrats in the Senate know the Republicans in the Senate are spineless and enough squish Rinos will vote for it. On the House side, as long as there are Main Street Republicans, there will be a few Republican votes. No amendments will be allowed, a few crumbs will be given if Republicans don’t make a fuss. That is all that is going to happen in the legislation.
Now to be honest, I agree with you and your goal. I just don’t see the Democrats being cooperative. They are in the golden 100 days of the Messiah’s reign. They won’t give an inch except for window dressing. A perfect is example is redistribution of tax revenue to non tax payers being called a tax cut. That is as good as it is going to get. That is all they will give.
However, this is only my opinion. I want to be wrong and I hope you are right. I guess I have braced myself for the worst and I fully expect it. So, do a lot of investors too. That may be my failing, but it is where I am at with this.

mbecker908 Saturday, January 10th at 1:17PM EST (link)Couldn’t disagree more.
Given that he will move toward policies that will undercut our national security - relying on “international agreements” instead of the overt threat of military force - by joining hands with the Euroweenies, we should do everything under the sun to make sure he has exactly no credibility abroad. He should be forestalled from ever delivering on a “promise” made to any of those fools.
To the extent that he continues the few “good” policies of the Bush Administration, we should support him and note - in very loud voices - that we are supporting him because he is following Bush’s policies, hence undercutting him with both the Euroweenies and his base.
Well now, if he weakens himself and thus America
Mike gamecock DeVine Saturday, January 10th at 1:22PM EST (link)then we will have to oppose him. Yes, I agree. All I am saying is that we should try to strengthen him by doing what you say where we agree and to try and nudge him to support freedom fighters by guilting him into it.
All I am saying is that we should not make gratuitous attacks on him based on campaign rhetoric and weaken him just for the sake of it.

Obama-nomics couldn’t be more wrong.
“Prosperity requires that the government drastically cut government spending. That way, as much real capital as possible will remain in private hands, and be put to productive use by entrepreneurs to create valuable goods and services to sell at home and abroad. By taxing and inflating our wealth away, Obama will simply be creating more of the crushing debt that brought about the current crisis.”

Specifically I noted that we should take his policies apart and show that the man is a danger to not just the US but to world peace as well. Do that, his creds will be zero. I certainly don’t support gratuitous attacks because they will bite us. But substantive attacks should be pursued to the very end and should have the objective of destroying (not “hurting”) his credibility everywhere and with everyone.
I think our only real disagreement is that I want elected Democrats of every variety destroyed - politically, professionally and personally - to the point where they can’t show their faces in public because they’d be tarred and feathered if they did. I see them as the enemy of the American Way and the American Dream and more dangerous to the Nation than aQ, Hamas, Hezbollah, Communists, Fascists, or Nazis could ever be. I doubt you go that far.

I know where this is going but: secession was not violence
Achance Saturday, January 10th at 2:06PM EST (link)and it is unlikely that Lincoln could have roused the North to war over secession alone. As GC says, firing on Ft. Sumter was violence and ultimately proved to be suicidal violence.
In Vino Veritas
secession is violence if backed up by violence
icbm Saturday, January 10th at 2:11PM EST (link)the south wasn’t staging a sit-in. they weren’t going to let themselves be kept in the union, i.e., they were willing to use violence to keep themselves out of the union.

Neil Stevens Saturday, January 10th at 2:20PM EST (link)The transition of power was entirely peaceful. There was a secession and that was that.
What was violent was the transfer of property after the secession. Lincoln wouldn’t give up Fort Sumter, and resupplied his troops there with clear military intent. He wasn’t going to give up the fort without a fight.
But you cannot deny that Lincoln took power peacefully, and that there was no delay in his taking power due to protests.

“One man with courage makes a majority.” - Andrew Jackson
That fateful Spring of 1861.
Achance Saturday, January 10th at 4:42PM EST (link)OK, I’m working from memory, so I may have some things off, correct me, don’t insult me.
From Dec until April only the seven Lower South states seceded Each did it scrupulously in the same manner that they originally entered the union, either convention or vote or action of the Legislature. I don’t remember which did which. I know Georgia elected delegates to a Convention. Public opinion in the North was very divided and many of the great opinion makers, e.g., Greeley were initially saying, “let them go.” There was some push back from business interests who began to understand what a free-trade South controlling the Port of New Orleans might mean to US revenue and their personal fortunes, but there was no outcry to preserve the union or to stamp out the vinyards of slavery. The Abolitionists had about the same status in the res publica as the Envirowhackos today, but they had some considerable influence on the Republican Party. Which is not to say that the Republicans and Lincoln would not have kicked them to the curb if necessary.
Then the residents of the lunatic asylum with the acquiescence of the Provisional Government of the Confederate States bombarded Ft. Sumter. The North was incensed that the US flag had been fired on. (Actually, it had been fired on several times, but this one was anticipated.) There is NO doubt that the attempt to “re-supply” Ft. Sumter was intended to be a provocation and Lincoln knew his adversary. He easily, almost effortlessly, provoked them into doing something suicidally foolish. Even firebrands like Robert Toombs were appalled by the attack.
In response to the attack on Ft. Sumter, Lincoln asked the Governors of the States to provide 75, 000 troops from the state militias “to suppress the rebellion.” The Upper South States refused to contribute troops to invade their Lower South brethren and seceded. Thus was the stage set.
What would Lincoln have done to get a war if the PACS hadn’t fired on a US fort? We can run some gaming out here: So, the CSA lets the US re-supply its fort(s), Sumter was only one of several similarly situated US facilities, and continues to ask for negotiation to set the payment for the US asset. The CSA had offered to pay the USA for all USA assets in the CSA. Eventually, that would have gamed out to an impasse some place or another or an over zealous commander some place. It would have come to blows eventually, I suppose. But if the CSA had been more restrained, less bellicose, it would have been much harder for the USA to have mobilized any public opinion and the CSA would have had a lot more chits with Britain and France.
The picture of an independent CSA sharing a long border with the USA is not a pretty one. Harry Turtledove does a wonderful job of running out how that might have been played over the ensueing century - it ain’t pretty.
So, it was an “irrepressible conflict;” they would have come to blows. But to the precise question of would there have been the war that was had the CSA not fired on Ft. Sumter? No, I think not. But there would have been a war; later, and worse.

Yeah, in New York in the summer of 1863!
Achance Saturday, January 10th at 4:54PM EST (link)In ‘61, there were threats and some thuggishness. You have to take almost any report of a threat to Lincoln or the Union in those early days with a grain of salt. There were people on both sides looking for a fight. There were people on both sides looking to curry favor. Pinkerton is a great example of that. What would the North’s reaction to the situation have been had they known the truly sorry state of CSA troops and organization rather than being bombarded with reports of an army that would outmatch Napoleons, all spit and polished, and armed and equipped with the latest and best. And people think the WMD reports from Iraq overstated the threat!
In Vino Veritas
War was pretty likely,
David123 Saturday, January 10th at 7:27PM EST (link)However, we have Guantanamo in Cuba so we could have theoretically kept Fort Sumpter in an independent nation of South Carolina. Sometimes, opposition happens to be the right thing. This is the case here, and will be the case with many of the more outrageous policies Obama will seek to implement. We expect our GOP senators and representatives to oppose any legislation that runs counter to our principles, and should punish those who sign onto bills that are anathema to us as Republicans. This is not to say everything should be opposed for the sake of opposition. There will be areas where Obama will be right. But for the most part he will not be.
The American people will reward the Republican Party if it sticks to its principles and seeks lto stop or shape legislation that otherwise would be harmful to our beloved country.

Non-color blind rooster sees gray in crisis and enhanced minority status
Mike gamecock DeVine Saturday, January 10th at 3:33PM EST (link)Jaded, I see the black and white in Obama vs us and quite frankly in most dem party leaders incl Hillary and even Bill.
And I know quite well who Obama the man is. But he is also President with a large dem party majority during a dire economic crisis coming on the heels of a decade of a damaged GOP brand.
We have to oppose Obama based on what he actually says and does as President, not on what he is or on what he said in the campaign. We can’t preemptively seek to emasculate the President based on political opposition.
We must oppose his bad policies and offer alternatives. We must seek to help America recover from the crisis, keep it strong, maintain its deterrence and try to help Obama see the light.
That is our duty.
I am not going to just preemptive oppose the man before he acts. I think my recent blog on his moral muteness on Israel shows that I see black and white just fine and that I am no gray seeking wilting violet.
Our disagreements are as to strategy in real time and possibly the import of the paradigm shift effect of the econ911 and what is best from the position of the minority during same.
I may end up opposing the stimulus, but rather than just decide to oppose “it”, whatever “it” is, I also think it wise that we be seen as trying to help Americans in this crisis and also seeking opportunities to win on some major issues like the Endangered Species Act, etc given the inevitable public works bill.
We can force Obama to choose his lawyer friends over the hope for change voters that want jobs!
We can get some supply side policies that might actually help Americans that are suffering.
We should try. It is our duty.
I know what Obama “is”. But I really hate that word. Obama now has the weight of the office on him. I have seen times that he is teachable and he has some great econ minds around him.
Summers is the real deal.
And I think Obama is very ignorant and that we need to help him! As Christians.
But it really doesn’t matter what he “is.” He wakes up everyday and has choices. We can work to make it more likely that he choose our way by political maneuvering.
Whether its showcasing Ukraine freedom fighters, US coal workers, people suffering from unemployment that need for investors to get tax breaks, etc.
Yes, its war. But there are many wars. Jihadists are at war against America and Obama is the only man that order the armed forces to fight back. We must try to show him the light on that.
There is a war against the recession and he has the veto, and we must TRY to get good policies. Thru compromise.
This crisis is real. We are going to be tested as a people and we can’t let politics stop us from at least trying to get some policies in the stimulus that will help.
On most issues, we will have to wage all out war. But let that develop after trying to deal. Esp as to the recession at first.
Like I said, I haven’t decided yet. There is no bill. I will have to read hundreds of pages of facts before I rant and rave.
I have a rep you know!

And no election victory is worth that.
Look, on all his fundamental changes, its war.
But as to public works and tax cuts? During a severe recession? When weighed against what we can acheive and the political situation?
The only question I have is the SIZE of the thing and the inflationary effect, and that could cause me to oppose it.
Still thinking.
But we have to be more than Dr No and we shouldn’t call taxcuts for those that work and pay FICA, welfare.

The panic mentality of both Bush and The Messiah and the Democrat Congress is not the reality of MOST peoples everyday existence.
The whole of Bush’s 8 years 5.2 percent unemployment the whole of Clinton’s 8 years 5.2 percent unemployment WHY is today worse than the 90’s WHY? It’s not it is just different! Think about the Oil Crises and stagnation of the 70’s think about the S&L’s of the 80’s think about the IT crash of the 90’s and the only one of those that the government chose to try to spend its way out of was the 70’s and it was detrimental to ALL Americans but the other two were detrimental to SOME Americans and they survived and came back THIS will be the case this time as well!

I listen to Levin everyday, and he is one of the most brilliant
Mike gamecock DeVine Saturday, January 10th at 4:17PM EST (link)lawyers and economic/political thinkers, period.
And the perfect Rx for what ails America is a supply side stimulus of income, corp and cap gain tax cuts; weakening of the ESA; expanded oil drilling and nuke power plants; end mark to market and pave the roads near my house!
But we can’t get all that. We can get some if we compromise with the dems, but as levin says, the cost of the bill may be worse than the cure.
But, even if we didn’t Obama and the dems, the recession we have been in since late 2007 and thru today is BAD and its going to get worse and was going to no matter who got elected and no matter what we do. The issue is, can we limit it to a year or two.
Levin is actually a bit self contradictory on this because he rightly bemoans the possible inflationary effect of the bailouts but then wants to play down the crisis while trying to combat Obama’s USE of the crisis to pass marxism!
I don;t blame him, but the fact is that we are in a crisis and given that consumers are on strike and investors are on strike and that their homes are no longer an ATM, things are getting bad as we speak.

Mike gamecock DeVine Saturday, January 10th at 4:40PM EST (link)And takes no cues from any scaremongers on my expectations for the economy over the next year or so. The piper must be paid for personal, business and government debt built up in the past 25 years of affluence.
These are the laws of nature. The era of the house as a commodity and ATM is over for this mainly consumer driven economy.
Now, is it possible for a non-politician that isn’t selling anything to the hearer, to “scare-monger.” I don’t think so. Although I guess I am always selling me!
As to the Paulson bailout, forget the market’s reaction. The main goals were to save the banking system and unclog the credit arteries.
They have been achieved. There is a huge re-fi boom as we speak.
But investors are still on strike as they mainly have been since the dems took power in 2006 due to expectations on taxes and regs.
A supply side stimulus would get them off strike.

Are we asking this question of the elected individuals that boldly stood against the “Big Government” Medicare Prescription hand-out….?
Are we talking about those brave souls who stood in rank against rapant and rabid spending… earmarks… and other pork-barrel deals?
Are we talking about those patriots who up stood against unnecessary “Nation Building” for a group of people who hero-worships shoe-throwers?
Are we talking about those brave men and women who realized that it was wrong to provide loans to individuals who could not pay them back… and that rose up to stand against those who would call them “racists” or “bigots” for doing so… ?
Again quote: “Giving Obama ‘A Chance’… Or Not”
Obviously… you must not be asking this of the Republican Party.
“NOT” is highly unlikely… to those spineless non-conservative souls we call Republicans. With only the Rinos being true to their base. Sadly… the Republicans have been so worried for themselves individually… they have long forgotten about the American public who elected them in 1994.

Republicans & conservatives have an OBLLIGATION to oppose this president based upon what he has promised to do to overthrow our Constitutional freedoms during the campaign and those insidiously dangerous ideas found in his books and interviews given that have surfaced to tell us what the man is really all about! Every Republican should remember that the Founders expected each branch of government to be a check and balance against the others lest one should become too powerful and usurp the rights of the people. If Obama is damaged in the eyes of the world and weakened because people stand hard and fast on preserving the Constitution and hindering his administration’s ability to undermine or destroy our God given liberty, then so be it!
To oppose him in the halls of Congress on those points is exactly what we elected them to do, and I shall expect them to carry out that mandate!

And, for the love of God, update the reflexive talking points a little, ‘kay? Karl Rove? Jack Bauer? Geez, next we’ll be hearing about those groundhogs/hamsters/whatever-they-were with weird teeth that liked the moon.

My (blogging-related) wish list.
I re-wrote this for you:
izoneguy Monday, January 12th at 9:05AM EST (link)In the nasty, give-no-quarter attitudes found on most left wing blogs which governed democratic response to our 43rd President, you soon found your minority position growing even more. The country has handed to you this election (and not because you weren’t liberal enough). Now we’re in an economic crisis and two wars. Obama has shown an idiotic, marxist approach. He’s chosen widely panned left-wing nominees and has not reached out to the GOP. His approval numbers are understandably going to fall. If you choose to only carp and snipe, especially blaming Bush’s foreign policy and Karl Rove politics, then prepare to lose even more support in 2010. You’ll have richly deserved that outcome.
“When the government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny.”
Thomas Jefferson
Sorry, that didn't work. See 11/7/2006 and 11/4/2008. [nt]
Martin Knight Monday, January 12th at 9:18AM EST (link)To me, “consensus” seems to be the process of abandoning all beliefs, principles, values and policies. So it is something in which no one believes and to which no one objects … There are still people in my party who believe in “consensus” politics. I regard them as Quislings, as traitors … I mean it.
- Margaret Thatcher
NOTE: “consensus” = “Bipartisanship™”/”Centrism™”
