Noblesse Oblige? The One Wants His OWN Star Trek Showing

I Know Spock, Mr. Obama. You are no Spock.

I suppose if I was the ruler of the free world, I’d want it too. I mean, if I controlled all I survey, if the nation bowed before me, if the illiterati gave an obedient chuckle at my every quip, yet paused thoughtfully at my pretensions at seriousness, if the world placed me on my rightful pedestal, I’d imagine that the producers of the hottest new movie premiering this month would be similarly overawed that I’d like to see their little film.

Certainly, were I the Übermensch-in-chief, I’d also imagine that these same film producers couldn’t possibly expect me to go to a public theater and be forced to sit with the “people” to see this flick, of course. I’d know that the film’s creators and stars would have the good sense not to expect me to have to sit among the sweaty, loud, unschooled masses, that great unwashed. These filmmakers are smart folks, after all I would know.

So, were I the king of the world, I too would give Paramount Pictures a call and demand that they set up a free, personal screening in my super cool movie house built especially for the president.

Of course, I’d have to jettison every ounce of self respect I have as well as fall to a nearly psychotic view of my own superiority to assume that the world should stop and cater to my every whim. I’d have to be completely unaware that my actions could easily be seen as one of arrogance, one that reveals a disregard for those I am supposed to be leading, one that ignores the concept of being a servant to the people.

With that in mind, what does one think when one reads Politico’s latest little report that reveals that President Barack Obama has called the Star Trek folks up asking for his own special, private screening of the franchise re-boot?

Of course, it all makes one wonder how one of Star Trek’s titular characters might view Obama’s demands? One might imagine that the self-centered assumptions of privilege would not be looked upon as anything other than a gross example of the human failing of arrogance born of a too healthy dose of self-esteem.

It’s all not very logical. No, not logical at all.

He cost the city of New York a million dollars in lost productivity, not to mention all the black ops people they had hushing up the operation.

A private screening of the film?

Priceless.

It pains me to say it, but you have to cut Obama some slack. Movies in the White House theater have been a traditional presidential perk for all Presidents regardless of party since 1942. President Reagan even had the 40 seat White House theater extensively remodeled …. funded by the Hollywood studios. The studios are happy to provide screenings at the White house whenever requested.

It would cost much more to have his family take over a local cinema for a screening. Let’s take the high road on this one

The issue

Christine (Diary) Saturday, May 9th at 7:10AM EST (link)

isn’t that the man wants to watch a movie in a theater put in the WH for that purpose.

The issue is that the news got released to the press as if to say “hey look, Obama is just one of you, he likes the same movies you like”.

I”m sure GWB watched a movie or two in the theater. He may even have asked for a screening of a new movie. We don’t know…and why? Probably because it wasn’t something the WH felt the need to leak to the press.

The primary process is FLAWED. Two states should not decide our candidate.

So much for that

President Bush to Screen ‘Thirteen Days’ at White House
January 31, 2001
Time Warner news release

All Presidents use the White House theater; for security reasons, for making political statements, and because they like to watch movies. By the way, Bush invited Teddy K. to the White House in February of 2001 to watch “Thirteen Days” and that too was covered in the press. Maybe Obama will invite Rush over to watch the film and cigars afterward or something :) .

This movie request as a source of outrage, not so much for me.

Since Chris Pine(New Kirk) campaigned for Obama I would think he would have no trouble getting a showing. The issue with this is Presidents of course have always watched movies the difference with the Obama White House is they feel the need to put out a press release telling us how normal he is because he likes stuff we like.

Obama does all the stuff us regular folk do...

No thinking person should object to the President watching a movie in the privacy of the White House. It’s this kind of juvenile logic that gives fodder to the left-wing loons in their attacks on Conservatives. This guy does enough real crap to be hammered on than to bring up this kind of silly stuff.

Another example of incompetence

gonzo55 (Diary) Saturday, May 9th at 12:17PM EST (link)

I agree with previous posters saying that it may be reasonable for TheOne to watch movies in the White House, but trumpeting it by leaking it to the MSM is absurd. They must have been either tone deaf or incompetent in thinking that bragging about what movies he watches in his mansion would impress us ordinary voters.

This is another example of a larger point: that this is the most incompetently run administration since at least Kennedy’s, and maybe even since Roosevelt’s. The Air Force One incident, the swine flu overreaction, endangering the financial sector with stress tests, and on and on. I said many times during the campaign that executive experience matters… let’s hope he’s too incompenet to implement his Maoist agenda, at least.

“So as a lot of people know, [George W. Bush] watches first-run films in the White House movie theater, a cushy 40-seat room on the ground floor near the entrance to the East Wing. The theater has been updated over the years, but its most extensive renovation came during the made-for-Hollywood presidency of Ronald Reagan, when the major studios of the time — Disney, Universal, Fox, Paramount, Columbia, MGM and Warner Brothers — put up $150,000 to make sure the president watched their wares in an environment as cosseted as the screening room of an entertainment mogul.

“Laura Bush sees more movies than does her husband, including the best-picture Oscar winner, ”Million Dollar Baby,” which she watched in the White House theater with friends on a recent weekday afternoon.

“The movies are sent overnight directly from the studios, in 35-millimeter film format, as soon as the White House requests them. The system was set up many presidencies ago by Jack Valenti, the adviser to President Lyndon B. Johnson and the recently retired president of the Motion Picture Association of America. “

You probably pleasured yourself to no end reading about the deluded fantasies the left had re: Ben Domenech.

And now you do the same to your favorite pictures of The Leader.

Now put your pants back on and shoo.

If he can’t get the movie in the WH, then perhaps to his iPod since he likes to give those out with himself on them. Also, that new Blackberry would have the same capability if he weren’t able to watch it in the WH.

Obama Request Traning Film: Star Trek...

Ron Robinson (Diary) Saturday, May 9th at 4:39PM EST (link)

… Paramount could get some great PR by pointing out that Obama sorely needs the leadership lessons contained therein.

A couple of stories higher in Sat’s front page, Dan Perrrin writes the story that just made me decide I’m taking my son to see the movie today.

Paramount could just say that they had sent over a training film.
