More Old Media Hypocrisy on Palin’s Book Deal

Old Media Trashes Palin as "Illiterate"

On his MSNBC show Hardball for May 13, Chris Matthews gleefully attacked Goveror Sarah Palin for hiring a ghostwriter for her upcoming book deal. In like fashion, Mark Silva of the Chicago Tribune’s The Swamp Blog has also gotten into Laugh-at-Palin’s-book mode so you can bet that this will be the scoff du jour among the left-media. But, the thing that proves the Old Media’s hypocrisy and partisanship is this “collaborator” angle. The media are going nuts that Palin is working with what is essentially a ghostwriter — though an upfront one, not a hidden one — and acting as if this is somehow unusual. But it simply is not.

Few politicians that have books published under their name ever themselves put pen to paper. Politicians are generally not writers and it is completely common that they hire actual writers to do the heavy lifting of composing their book. But here is both Matthews and Silva acting as if Palin is the only one ever to do it.

Heck, sometimes politicians never even read the book that bears their name just allowing their name to be affixed to the cover and letting it go at that. Barry Goldwater, for instance, is famous for having hinted that he never read the famous book that bears his name. The Conscience of a Conservative was actually ghostwritten by Brent Bozell, Jr., father of L. Brent Bozell III currently of the Media Research Center.

Regardless of the truth, however, this Tribune hack really takes the cake. Here is how Mark Silva starts off his rant:

Reading her face, like a cover, one might think Sarah Palin is a little young to have enough material for “a memoir.”

Might I suggest that a similar opening sentence might be presented for another famously young politician with a book deal?

Reading his face, like a cover, one might think Barack Obama is a little young to have enough material for “a memoir.”

… and yet, Obama has two memoirs! Did Mark Silva make fun of Obama? Bet you can answer that one without my assistance.

Next the partisan Silva goes into the “hired writer” aspect of the story.

So the Republican hockey-mom-pitbull-grandma-national-political-prospect, with the help of a hired writer, is setting out to set her story straight.

And a few lines later Silva hits the point again… you know, just in case someone missed it a few lines before.

Hired writer or no, the author of the memoir plans to put her own touch on the text.

So why the harping on the “hired writer” factoid? Why else but to hammer home the idea that Palin can’t write it for herself? Why else but to place the seed of ridicule in the mind of the reader?

But, as I was saying, the list of those politicians that wrote their own books is very, very small. In fact there are at least two prominent book sellers whose names appear on covers of books written by ghostwriters that Silva has probably never once scolded for having a “hired writer.” Those two are Bill and Hillary Clinton. Add to that John Kerry, Al Gore and every other extremist lefty favorite pol that is famous for “their” books and you’ll get a left-wing list that Silva has mysteriously never shaken his writerly finger at.

In 2007, for instance, I chronicled a much worse “collaborator” story that the Old Media itself completely ignored. Of course, that story was all about the time Hillary Clinton had a ghostwriter for her “award winning” book, It Takes a Village. And the story didn’t stop at just the fact that Hillary didn’t write a word of her famous book, but it roiled on further as she tried to keep credit from the woman that actually wrote the thing.

So, I have to ask: will Mark Silva chide Hillary for not only having a ghostwriter, but for stiffing the actual writer of credit? Somehow I’ll have to guess that Silva will avoid the tale. No, it’s much better to hold Palin to a standard that he won’t hold anyone else to.

Just to recap what happened on Matthews’ Hardball show:

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Plus Sarah Palin –- now don’t laugh –- is writing a book. Not just reading a book, writing a book. Actually in the word of the publisher she’s “collaborating” on a book. I love the way that sounds. Does that mean she answers questions of the writer and then the writer writes the book? I guess the reason to have someone to write a book for you and claim it’s your book is to get to do a nationwide book tour and act the part of a, of an author yourself. Well she’s not the first person to pull that number. Sarah Palin - author! In tonight’s Politics Fix…What is Sarah Palin up to?….She’s got this book deal, she obviously is not gonna write it. They’ve already announced somebody is, she’s gonna collaborate on it. What an embarrassment! It’s one of these “I told you,” books that jocks do. You know she’s already declared, I mean, why they do it like this? “She can’t write, we got a collaborator for her.”

Finally, let me contrast all this “hired writer” scoffing with a bit of news from the May 18 issue of the Weekly Standard. It seems that a fellow named Quinn Bradlee has just issued a “memoir” of his own. The 26-year-old has been celebrated in various Old Media outlets as a promising young man that has something to say.

Only he didn’t. Say it, I mean. Our young Mr. Bradlee didn’t say it because he actually had his book ghostwritten for him by a fellow named Jeff Himmelman. So what you ask? Well, as it happens, Quinn Bradlee is the son of Benjamin Bradlee, former editor of the Washington Post, and Sally Quinn, former Post Style editor and current co-moderator of a Washington Post blog called On Faith.

So, are we going to see Mark Silva poking accusing fingers at Quinn Bradlee for his inability to write his own book? Is Silva going to wonder if the 26-year-old Bradlee is “old enough” to have anything to say in a memoir? Can we expect Matthews to say how “embarrassing” this Bradlee offspring is?

Just wondering.

Glass Houses

oldpossum Friday, May 15th at 7:00AM EDT (link)

It is well known that Ted Sorenson wrote JFK’s Profiles in Courage. That fact was hidden for decades.

Jack Cashill proved with plagiarism software that Obama’s Dreams of My Father was written by William Ayers, Pentagon bomber.

that no stones will be thrown. That said, it is almost unheard of for any high-level political figure to write any of their own stuff. There would be no JFK legend if it weren’t for Sorenson, Manchester, et al. though JFK was very facile on his feet; some of his press conferences are very impressive. In my memory, only Reagan was in the same league.

they’d accuse her of spending time on such a frivolous thing instead of attending to her state’s real business.

On second thought, do the lefties even believe Alaska is a real state? I mean, the way they sniffed when they heard where Sarah Palin lives — oh, she’s from A-laaaaaas-ka — it was as though they consider the state nothing more than a hunk of ice up north. I recall them being surprised that any governor of Alaska had anything to do at all of any substance.

Alaska is to them whatever suits their ideology

ciscoguy Friday, May 15th at 9:17AM EDT (link)

If BHO came from Alaska, the spin would be that he is an fierce independent reformer from the rugged frontier, descending upon Washington to change how business is done. (The amazing thing is that he was able to emerge from the Chicago Machine amidst Wright, Ayers, an Rezko scandals with a near identical storyline.) However, to them, Palin is just a moose-hunting redneck living in an igloo in the middle of nowhere.

Frankly, nobody much knows anything about Alaska.

Achance Friday, May 15th at 9:38AM EDT (link)

When I’m traveling, I’m very reticent to even mention that I live in Alaska because I’m either going to have to answer a bunch of stupid questions about igloos and 24 hour darkness or I’m going to get into some kind of argument about the environment and the eeeeevvvvuuulllll oil industry.

My experience on the two coasts is that most people there think everybody who doesn’t live in a city on one of the two coasts is some illiterate redneck. I shall never forget an encounter in Boston. I was there with a couple of my subordinates for a seminar at Hahvud. One of my subordinates and I were sitting in a very Irish, obviously political, bar downtown. They had a collection of cop uniform patches on the way and the two of were looking at them and talking quietly, very pointedly minding our own business and not talking politics. Suddenly, a woman sitting beside my companion turns to us and almost shouts, “You two are from one of those Red states, what the f#$% were you people thinking?” She then proceeds to rant and rave about the evils of President Bush, Republicans, and all things not lefty. She was so obnoxious that she attracted the attention of the manager or owner who came over and told her to be nice to his guests and bought us a beer.

We were wearing standard business attire that you’d see anywhere in the Country, the only thing distinguishable about us was the fact that we didn’t have Boston accents, and that was all it took

How would you like to have spent your entire life getting by with a low IQ, no balls, and the wit of a bus crash and suddenly a woman shows up who is more everything then they will ever be. Has to shake their frail, tiny egos which match a part of their anatomy that they are also embarrassed about.

Palin’s Intelligence

jburr Friday, May 15th at 9:36AM EDT (link)

Does this surprise you? The left has been trying to portray Gov. Palin as an imbecile since she first entered the public light, yet at the same time they make a concerted effort to gush over the keen intellect of the messiah.

I would like to pose a question on that matter, when the teleprompter goes out who is the actual idiot Gov. Palin or the anointed one? Is there any argument? Uh Uh Uh Uh, let me be perfectly clear uh uh uh uh and on and on and on.

uh

snewb098 Friday, May 15th at 10:26AM EDT (link)

Yes. They sure seem scared of her.
When Regan became prez in 1980 there were no blogs
or 24/7 news cycle or he would have been hammered just as much.
They are afraid of her. VERY afraid.
BTW, IMO Robert Gibbs press sec says uh uh uh more than the
uh uh messiah.

You did get the memo, right?

According to the MSM, any popular conservative is either a dunce or cynical manipulator. Heck, GWB was both at the same time!

Can’t hurt to compile a list of all pols with collaborators. Just to through it back in their faces.

I'll not only pre-order it

But I’ll stand in a 5,000 person line a la Flee’s booksignings to get a signed copy should she go on a book tour and hit a location near me. Ghostwritten. Gee. It’s not like lefties write their own books, give me a break!

I bought the little paperback biography of Palin as soon as I found out about it last Sept.

This is sure to make the left even further demented. Someone get a straightjacket for Sully. Bring it on!!

Sales will vindicate Palin.

Let them rant. If one more person reads her book (which I am looking forward to) out of curiousity because of Matthew’s, et al, rantings…the better.

To me, “consensus” seems to be the process of abandoning all beliefs, principles, values and policies. Amazon.com is getting my pre-order

lonebeagle Friday, May 15th at 11:53AM EDT (link)

I’ve never pre-ordered a book on Amazon (I buy lots of stuff from them), but I’m pre-ordering Palin’s. I predict that Palin autobiograhy will be a big hit before it is even published.

I can predict what the MSM will be doing when it does hit the shelves–it’s going to get ugly.

lone, you could be right

peg_c Friday, May 15th at 1:03PM EDT (link)

But what have they done with Mark’s book at #1 for 6 weeks? However, she inflames their insanity. Mark is invulnerable to them in so many ways.

She needs the proceeds from this to fund her legal defense against all the slime and slander being perpetrated against her by the left and the Drive-Bys.

Well, NRO has a good article about the illusion called President Palin. In such illusion, the VERY IDEAL MSM is still so MAD with the in-your-dream President for a different reason.
