RS

MEMBER DIARY

Surviving the Redesign of RedState

Thought I would throw together a few thoughts to test the redesign of RedState and see how many more bugs might be around.

It’s been nearly a week since the switch-over and what a week it has been.  After about day three, I was really missing the old RedState and wondering if things would ever be the same or at least come close.  And conversely, my anger and frustration at losing access to all of the features that made RS so unique, turned into massive appreciation for just how wonderful RedState has been.

Gradually, I am starting to feel more at home and seeing that just maybe, when all the bugs are worked out, we will still have all of the features we had before.  The ongoing problems with member diaries — most of which are all truncated and contain the wrong comments in the comments section — have left members feeling disoriented and perplexed wondering if the spaghetti-like mess will ever be sorted out.  Some were so dismayed that they were actually accusing RS of dissing and demoting members and their diaries in favor of a more professional, business-like site that favored front-page writers and left the rest of us as an after-thought.

But that would be the wrong conclusion.  RS would not be RS without all of its member’s contributions.  And for that, I want to say thank you to everyone at RS.  My life has been so enriched by getting involved here and I am looking forward to many more years of the same.

Damn right, I enjoy Redstate and pay more attention to diaries than pundits here. If I want pundits I go elsewhere – if I want grassroots and passionate views from the front lines I come here.

Some suggestions (that better be heeded):
    1) Bump up the font size and prominence of the diaries
    2) Expand the diaries box to half-screen

COMMENT BOX ON “FRONT PAGE” …I can only see 5 comments…am I missing how to scroll down to see them all?

    • westcoastpatriette

The bar on the right side of the comments box should allow you to scroll down, 10ab. I just counted a total of twenty comments when you scroll all the way down.

        Thank you!

Good grief…since I read from my IPAD maybe that is why I do not see a bar on the right… don’t see a bar anywhere. I am going to have a cinnamon roll in frustration and try to chill out.

I have always been far more interested in member diaries than anything else at Red State. Man alive I can barely write this from my iPhone. Like the keys are sticky.

    • westcoastpatriette

Me too, cheetah2. It’s what makes RS so special.

It’s sad to see the member diaries/comments get very little real estate on home page, while front page stuff gets blown up. A deliberate decision to make RS more of a one-way informational blog and much less a member community. I’ll be searching elsewhere for that now.

Not a single button on home page on how to get involved in the party either, and RS touts itself as grass roots?

“Not a single button on home page on how to get involved in the party either, and RS touts itself as grass roots?”

Old Cold Warrior would not be happy about that!!! :)

Undoubtedly we will be told to be “patient” and everything will be fine! :)

So let us be optimistic, even though Mrs. Ausonius tells me that my inveterate optimism is actually an escape from reality!

There was no “deliberate decision” to make RS less of a community site. In fact, this redesign was supposed to make RS’s community stronger. For instance, the map on the right side of the front page, it takes you to all of the state specific diaries. Once it is fully working, it will show activist diaries for their own states, and the map will have a pulse based on activity in the different states.

These are the perfect venue for the Cold Warrior style posts urging people in that state to get off the sidelines and in the game.

As of now, the member diaries list on the front page is showing new content from the member diaries, a huge improvement over where we were just yesterday.

So, as Ausonius predicted, be patient, things are being fixed and the issues that effect the community the most are taking the highest priority.

          • Ausonius

The “activist map” is an excellent idea! Certainly that will help people to discover certain things happening in their own back yards.

I don’t have a font-size issue – of course, I use ‘Ctrl +’ in Firefox to adjust all the sites I visit… This one actually SCALES nicely (which is rare – most are zoom-intolerant)…

The biggest bug-a-boo I see right now is RECENT diaries (such as those about Akin) being somehow attached to comment-threads about stuff that happened IN 2008!

WCP’s diary about Akin has discussion of SDI and the Chinese Olympics…

The comment section may be here, but it’s SCRAMBLED LIKE NASTY ARMY-ISSUE EGGS!
