Is Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn Ready To Replace Speaker Boehner?

It is time to make changes in the House — primarily in the leadership. There has been a slow movement toward acknowledging that Speaker Boehner can no longer pretend he is the best man for the job. If he were less of a political animal and more of a principled statesman, he would do the right thing and withdraw his name from consideration for Speaker of the 113th Congress. However, since that is very unlikely to happen, conservatives must do the right thing and find enough votes to prevent him from getting the absolute majority required to remain Speaker.

Now, it is time to consider who could replace him. I have just finished reading Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn’s biography and remain impressed with her record. She would be a refreshing new face (not to mention, she is quite beautiful — and I can say that because I’m a woman) and she is a fantastic public speaker and defender of conservative principles. But, especially interesting is this:

Blackburn was selected to serve as an Assistant Majority Whip in the 108th Congress and an Assistant Minority Whip for the 109th Congress. Whip Roy Blunt has recently selected Congressman Blackburn to serve as a Deputy Whip for the 110th Congress

I was not aware that she has experience as an Assistant Whip. Twice. Maybe she is ready for a promotion and is the right person to handle a fractured Republican House for the 113th Congress. Thoughts?

You mean the same Marsha Blackburn who is supporting Lamar Alexander for re-election? I think Boehner’s job could be in jeopardy, but he will have to do one more dumb thing at least. And if he goes, Cantor is the favorite to replace him.

    • westcoastpatriette

Cantor would be more of the same.

    • JKnight

Eric Cantor will definitely make a play for the job if Boehner resigns. Unfortunately, I’d rather have John Boehner stay than Eric Cantor become speaker.

Is anyone challenging Lamar? Do conservatives in TN have a candidate to run against him? Two years is a long time, and with the right candidate, perhaps Blackburn and others can be persuaded to back another horse, but not if there isn’t one.

As a Tennessean, I don’t see anyone beating Alexander. The man is almost an institution here. Tennessee is more moderate as far as state politics go, though it’s solid red in Presidential elections, which I’ve never really understood. If you look at WV.. the Democrats have a stranglehold on state politics there, with the Governor, both legislative Houses, both U.S. Senate seats, along with a pretty liberal Senator in Rockefeller, who will probably win again in 2014, but Romney carried the state by 30pts.

In TN, the Republicans took control of the House for the first time in 100 years in 2010, though the state has been reliably red for the GOP Presidential elections. And TN had a popular two term Democratic Governor before Haslim. Just seems odd to me is all.

        • Melody Warbington

I grew up in TN, and all of my family still lives there. I was still there when Lamar campaigned in the shirt, and I thought he was a good governor. He’s been abysmal as a senator – so much so that I tossed out his book.

Agreed that TN politics is odd. Like TN, here in AL, we took control of our state house in 2010 as well for first time in over 125 year. Our congressional delegation doesn’t vote nearly as conservative as it should considering what a red state we are on a national level. I think it’s because too many of our “R’s” used to be “D’s.”

Remember John Jay Hooker & Jake Butcher?

  • DerKrieger

She was my Congressman when I lived in TN, love her!

    • DerKrieger

      Congresswoman.

  • capeconservative

There are many well-qualified members who have stood by their STRONG conservative values – how about PAUL RYAN! We need someone who will present a STRONG FRONT against this administration who has a more than willing accomplice in the media!!!

  • funwithknives

I don’t know about House rules, decorum, or senority but in my humble opinion, I want to see Rep.Trey Gowdy of S. C. in that position.
Call me goofy and a dreamer, but let’s see some backbone in the front lines, and out in front for a while.
No one is gonna blow smoke up his hiney,…. period.
We need a Bear, and it might as well be a Grizzly…….

    • westcoastpatriette

I don’t mind following House rules, fwk, but the decorum and seniority traditions need to go. We need to do what is best for the nation — which includes breaking tradition and power plays. Clearly, they are not working.

      • westcoastpatriette

kowalski — especially the seniority tradition. Isn’t that exactly what we want to discourage? Career politicians working their way up the power structure?

“Call me goofy and a dreamer”
      OK … you’re goofy and a dreamer.

It’s a pipedream to think backbenchers become Speakers overnight. Get them into lower rung in the leadership first. These silly posts are like those folks supporting Bachmann, Cain etc for President. Not. Gonna. Happen.

The only Boehner alternative who would be viable *and* a step up would be … Rep Tom Price, who alas lost a bid for a leadership spot to a boehner ally.

      • funwithknives

Well, as long as you bring up ‘silly’ how about considering a few trifles:
        1) If it is a ‘pipedream’ to want to see responsibility get taken, and real backbone in our Republic, then new protocols and rules need to be considered ,debated and adopted. More Americans than this writer want to see these things happen and not in 4 years, nor even 2 years. Now would be really nice, and we are waiting.
You somewhat beclown yourself, IMHO, when you take up a commentor’s obvious self-depreciation and advance it as you do . But I did open the door and this was an easy way for you to take a shot , hence you took it. GoodOnYa’……if you’re hunting fish in a barrel.
I met Cain and found him to be miles ahead of Romney in every meaning of what I wanted in a candidate. Being from Mich. and kinda familiar with ‘Romneys’ in every permutation, made Herman my first choice.
The fact that Mitt became the de facto choice points to the system you so eloquently seem to think is unchangeable, must change over time.

wcp, you might be on to something w/Blackburn. I can’t decide if O will treat a woman with the same distain and disrespect as Boehner or better. It’s a toss up but she’s a good choice and agree we need someone regardless of seniority.

But if not her, it’s a tie for me between Pete Sessions and Darryl Issa, then Gowdy and Gohmert are also a tie for me. Issa would take no prisoners if unleashed by Rover- look at Boehners trepidation over F&Furious.

I still recall this post that stated how Sessions kept his eye on the prize, even while Boehner was recoiling: http://www.redstate.com/2012/11/12/republicans-could-learn-from-pete-sessions-leadership-of-the-nrcc/

    • Melody Warbington

Of course Obama and other libs will treat Blackburn with disdain and disrespect. Women and blacks are only respected by liberals if they are liberal. Of course, they’re pretending then as well. Their only concern is what can you do for me and how do I have to treat you to get it.

      • checkmate2012

Hi Melody! You’re right- what was I not thinking of – Palin, Condi Rice, etc. So thanks for taking me off the fence. Thoughts on the other names I named?

    • westcoastpatriette

Sorry I’m so late replying, checkmate. My computer finally went kaput for good and I have been off line for a couple days (got a new computer for Christmas, though…yea!!!) Not that I think Blackburn really stands a chance, but I am just more than tired of the status quo and she would be a refreshing change. It would be quite interesting to watch how the O would deal with her if she were Speaker. He has no integrity whatsoever and no shame when it comes to smearing anyone for political gain.

There are a number of people who could take over Boehner’s role and be a huge improvement. I like all of your suggestions. Issa would give the left a run for their money and he is a good speaker, too. We need someone who brings vitality and a love for conservative principles and is a good orator. Boehner and McConnell are both stereotypical, boring politicians who engender about as much trust as used car salesmen. No wonder we seem to be losing every argument.

I sure hope there is some serious planning going on to oust Boehner. What have we got to lose? Nothing as I see it.

Hi wcp! Glad you got a new PC. I agree that we need a new fresh face as Speaker of the House. I recently commented that the 65+ crowd on the Hill have been they since before the turn of the century and need to retire and hand over the reigns to the newcomers. The status quo isn’t working with all the dinasaurs in Congress, mostly the Senate, but on both sides. Blackburn would suit me and her record is impressive.

“The average age of Members of the House at the beginning of the 112th Congress was 56.7 years; and of Senators, 62.2 years.”
        http://www.senate.gov/reference/resources/pdf/R41647.pdf

“As of December 17, 2012, 3 senators are in their 80s, 24 are in their 70s, 39 are in their 60s, 25 are in their 50s, and 8 are in their 40s.”

        • westcoastpatriette

Wow! Those are some interesting stats. No wonder we are so stuck in terms of change. We have dinosaurs running Washington.

We are going to have to renew interest in voting period. The consequences of voter apathy and ignorance is biting all of us.

          • checkmate2012

Right and it got me thinking….maybe we should be putting up a young candidate to run against all the Dems over 60 and Rinos too…give them intense messaging training and maybe we’d win more elections! Shallow I know but just maybe it’d work. Merry Christmas to you!

          • westcoastpatriette

Not really shallow. It’s just the truth about both sides. They both take advantage of ignorance and apathy.

And Merry Christmas to you, too. I certainly hope next year gets better politically.

Ruh roh….didn’t know where to post this but it ain’t good: Idaho Sen. Crapo arrested in Va., charged with DUI. This is not what we need right now from our Senators on the Right.
