RedState Posting Rules (read ‘em, trolls…and go away on your own).

Since the redesign and switch to disqus last year, the Posting Rules are not easy to access and some do not even realize we have them. When I first came to RedState, I read them frequently to keep me on course with the purpose of RS. Also, I used them to confront those who mistakenly think we are here to debate liberals. For all the trolls reading this, please take note of the section listing the “purpose” of RS, as well as rules number 13 and 14.

Sidenote: We realize that liberals have little respect for laws and/or rules, but don’t pretend you don’t know what they are or act surprised when you are confronted and banned.

Posting Rules

The purpose of RedState.com is:

to promote conservative ideals within the vehicle of the Republican Party,
to clean house in the Republican party,
to help elect conservative Republicans,
and to encourage and educate conservative Republican activists committed to the above.

While the established community on site is valued, RedState.com’s registration, comments, and diaries are open to the public. In order to assure the site’s continued achievement of its purposes, this site has rules. A person’s failure to comply with the rules can result in deactivation of the person’s account. The proprietors of this site and their appointed moderators are the sole and final judges and enforcers of this policy.

Users who are banned may contact the proprietors to appeal any moderator action, or to lodge a complaint about moderator behavior.

The rules are as follows, and apply both to the comments and diaries on this site:

1. Profanity and vulgarity are not allowed. Disturbing and/or pornographic images are not allowed to be included on the site.
2. Namecalling and personal attacks directed at other users is not allowed.
3. Following a user on the site to abuse, harass, or disrupt is not allowed.
4. It is forbidden to single out a user for abuse or harassment for any reason, including being new to the site, being suspected of breaking site rules, or for supporting a particular candidate for office. If you suspect that a user is breaking site rules, contact the site or a moderator directly.
5. Offtopic commenting for the purpose of disruption is not allowed.
6. It is forbidden to promote or give any kind of support for parties other than the Republican party, or candidates running against Republican primary, caucus, and/or convention nominees. Exceptions to this rule are granted when announced prominently on the front page of the site.
7. Promotion of certain theories and ideas contrary to our site principles is not allowed. These ideas include, but are not limited to:
Discrediting of opinions based on one’s service in the military, or lack thereof, commonly known as “Chickenhawking.”
Violent Jihad
The violent overthrow of the United States Government
Racism, and particularly theories of superiority or inferiority, racist stereotyping, and the use of racist epithets.
Baseless conspiracy theories of Jewish, Israeli, or Zionist control of American foreign policy or the American government. Baseless accusations of “dual loyalties” to a person solely for being Jewish or being of Jewish descent are not allowed.
Theories that Barack Obama is not eligible to the Presidency of the United States, or political movements based on that idea. Birthers must post their theories elsewhere.
Theories of the 9/11 terrorist attacks that suggest the US national, state, or local governments allowed, encouraged, conducted, or were in any other way involved with the attacks, including the “9/11 Truth movement,” or theories that buildings were intentionally collapsed on that day. Truthers must post their theories elsewhere.
8. Generalized attacks on mainstream, peaceful religious beliefs and practices are forbidden. RedState.com is firstly a political website, and is not an appropriate venue for debates on comparative Christianity and Judaism.
9. It is not allowed to use a username or alias of a known public figure without permission, or to take other steps to impersonate a known public figure.
10. No attempt must be made to use multiple accounts or team efforts to manipulate the Recommended Diaries feature, and no person is allowed to use the Recommend feature on his own work with any account.
11. The use of multiple accounts by a single person in a covert, deceptive way to provide the appearance of greater support for his views, which is the practice commonly known as “sock puppeting,” is not allowed.
12. Re-registration under a new username by a person who has been banned on a previous account, without permission from the site proprietors, is forbidden. Circumventions of site bans is not allowed.
13. The dissemination of talking points from the Democrat Party, or its politicians and allies, is not allowed.
14. It is forbidden to attempt to discredit or bring disharmony to the site, the Republican party, any of its candidates, or the conservative movement by pretending to be something one is not and posting maliciously. The practices known as “concern trolling” or “mobying” are included in this ban.
15. The closing of comments or deletion of content by anyone other than the proprietors or moderators is not allowed.

Note: Rule number 10 is no longer applicable. Since the redesign, we no longer have the Recommended Diaries feature. (And it is really missed.)

Thank you for posting this. I’m rather new to the site and I have a few diaries, so this will help a lot.

    • westcoastpatriette

      You’re welcome.

  • lonelyinthemiddle

“It is forbidden to promote or give any kind of support for parties other than the Republican party”…..

So, one cannot speak of the desire for a 3rd Party? This one sure seems to get broken a lot!

    • westcoastpatriette

There is a difference between promoting and supporting a third party and discussing if it is time to create one. The latter is given some latitude, while the former will get you a swift boot.

      • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

It’s never time to create one. If you think it’s time to create one, RS is not the place to post it.

        • westcoastpatriette

Yes, sir. Was just basing my answer on discussions that have been allowed recently wrt feeling betrayed by the Republican party.

          • Spike

betrayal in any relationship often leads to the dissolution of that relationship in favor of another….. i do feel betrayed by many of our elected GOP folks…. trying not to ask for a ‘divorce’, but i’ll admit it sounds tempting sometimes

          • westcoastpatriette

Exactly. But Neil has taken the correct position, I think. No marriage should be entered into with the option of divorce anywhere in the contract. IOW, it is out of the question and eventually, your faithfulness to each other will pay great dividends. (sigh)

      • kipling

I was going to suggest we see how many we could break before we got caught but you blew that one. wcp, you are a subversive. : )

        • westcoastpatriette

          lol, kipling. nt

    • streiff

desire is one thing. Advocacy is another. We ban people who advocate a 3d party.

Neil, I exchanged comments on this topic with Bill a few months ago and stated that the Rules are not easy to find. I suggested that a tab labeled “Posting Rules” be added to the bottom of the webpage or add it to “About Us”.

If I type in “help” in the search box it returns 30 pages; if I type in “posting rules” it ONLY returned this diary from wcp….nothing from RS.

      • westcoastpatriette

The search box generally is very unreliable. I like your suggestion.

        • checkmate2012

Bill liked it too and said he’d look into it. It doesn’t seem like an expensive proposition, but I’m not a programmer. I don’t recall if when I got my login I got a list of the rules. Seems like most sites these days, someone should have to check the box, ” I agree to these terms…”.

          • Bill S

It’s not hard. But my suggestion was not heeded. Apparently the tech folks have other things to do.

        • nickfondacaro

Yeah I can’t even find my own work when I use the search box.

          • westcoastpatriette

The only way I can find my diaries is when I write one. Then, I click on the word “diary” after my screen name below the title of the diary.

          • Melody Warbington

            Nick, do this http://www.redstate.com/users/nickfondacaro/

Same holds for other members. Just substitute your own user name. For example, I would go to www.redstate.com/users/rightwingmom52 Thanks to acat for this tip.

Clicking on older entries rather than page 2 will bring up the next list of diaries. For some reason, the page #’s don’t work properly.

          • checkmate2012

Thanks for the tip Melody- it worked for me!

  • Viet71

It’s not clear to me the extent to which discussion is permitted on certain topics. For example, the 1960s assassinations, which still resonate.

So much more is known now about the JFK assassination, for example, than was known on 11/22/63.

    • PowerToThePeople

It pretty much goes as this, this site is not a conspiracy site, a detective site, and a site to rehash “questionable” police investigations. It is a site dedicated to furthering the conservative cause. That being said….

I am sure the site and its mods/staff would have no problem with a reasonable discussion about something like the JFK shooting as long as it did not get into wacko land, and we all know where that line is, and it did not distract from the purpose of the site. I would assume that goes for about anything. Let us say for example that you have been addicted to meth for 20 years up until two years ago. You want to express your thoughts on sobriety and mention you have been clean for two years. You write a diary. I am sure the site would be OK with that within reason as long as it does not become the focus of the site. Most would be proud you cleaned up and say so, but at the same time, this site is not really designed for announcements of sobriety. Most of the long time posters here know how to moderate themselves when it comes to off topic items and would respect the site, newbies may not.

I would also assume that if the mods felt the conversation was becoming a distraction, they would say so. And depending on length of time here and past history, said person would be dealt with according to those standards, nicely or harshly.

I disagree with you often as well as you do with me, but I am sure you are mature enough to know where the line is and what is appropriate, hence I doubt you will ever have an issue. Those without that maturity and respect really do not belong here anyways as they are just a future train wreck awaiting mod action.

      • Viet71

So, if I presented some facts, I would not be banned?

Aiming toward the 50th anniversary of JFK’s assassination.

        • PowerToThePeople

Why would you be banned? The only conspiracy theories that will get a person banned on site are the 9-11 thruther and Obama not a citizen ones. They also ban for Ron Paul is god nonsense.

As I said, you are a reasonable guy with plenty of enough maturity to know when too much is too much. I can not see where you would be banned for bringing up the JFK assassination as long as it is kept reasonable and does not become your new focus. I love reading the theories on JFK although I believe one shooter and the right one was caught. We are all adults here, we know the mission of this site and the patience level of the mods. Show the proper respect to the site and its staff and you will always be OK.

Look forward to your take on the JFK shooting.

  • http://www.pengepungen.dk johngflynn657

i am confident that all the people who registered in this site are responsible individuals. I hope

    • streiff

not a very safe bet. Probably safer in non-election years than election years. During presidential primaries you’d loose you shirt making that bet.

    • Bill S

      That confidence would be misplaced.

      • westcoastpatriette

Boy, does he have a lot to learn.

  • gmat

“Also, I used them to confront those who mistakenly think we are here to debate liberals.”

I’ve noticed you doing that. How does that comport with rule #4?

    • jimmyg

I have to agree with you. It seems like if an argument or discussion is not going in a certain direction, and a disagreement occurs, it is the default position for some posters to resort to name calling, or the extensive use of adjectives to describe either the poster or his or her argument.

    • westcoastpatriette

Reading comp is your friend. Abuse and harassment does not equate with confronting.

      • gmat

As long as you are confident that your confrontation is never expressed with contemptuous language, I agree with your distinction.

        • westcoastpatriette

Not that confident. I am capable of feeling and expressing contempt and have probably crossed the line before. That’s why I read the rules a lot to keep myself in line. :) )

          • gmat

Me too. I try to imagine I am talking to someone in a working class bar where I don’t know people very well. Except when I forget to.

  • rayf1nkle

So are liberals or Democrats in any form not welcome here at all? Sorry if that was already asked.

    • westcoastpatriette

Not unless they are conservative in which case they would not be liberals or Democrats.

      • checkmate2012

I knew you’d jump on this- lol and was waiting for the obligatory, “reading is your friend”! I was going to quote that and see Rule #13:

“The dissemination of talking points from the Democrat Party, or its politicians and allies, is not allowed.”

        • westcoastpatriette

Poor guy. I remember being so confused when I first got here. I got attacked for my very first post and had to learn how to defend myself quickly. And it’s been like that ever since. It’s been good for me, though. Made me have to think about why I believe what I believe. I’ve learned so much from others, too. And I’m still learning.

I miss acat so much. He kind of took me under his wings when I first got here and brought me up to political speed. He was always willing to explain things to me that I didn’t understand. And even though he was libertarian leaning, he knew he had to respect all the social conservatives here and he did that, too. Really miss him.

          • checkmate2012

I miss him to and also gekster who took me under her wing (I initially thought gekster was a guy and was surprised to learn otherwise after months!). You can read acats comments on moelane.com. I go there because I like Moe’s strange sense of humor, in a good way that I relate to, and to see the comments there….acat is there alot.

          • PowerToThePeople

I wonder where Gekster went to. She and I started out rough, but over time we both developed a mutual respect and even started agreeing more often than not. All of a sudden she was gone. I assumed it had something to do with the sick child or grandchild, but never heard from her again.

          • checkmate2012

PttP, yeah I had a semi-rough time initially and then we became comrades- she challenged me and I still recall gekster’s rules for posting, when doing a reco! Don’t know but miss her voice. Just read acat on moe’s site so he’s around. I think gek left after the RS change and disqus privacy issues, but not sure if it was more personal. She’s missed!
            .
Like wcp with acat- I had a rocky start with gekster but challanged her and here’s what I got and when we became friends…this is hilarious but kept it for my RS learning and hope you enjoy the memories! :

Good Morning cranky Gekster :) Don’t slam me PLEASE
checkmate2012 (Diary) Thursday, May 3rd at 3:11AM EDT (link)
but just wondering if you ever have anything nice to say ever or what posts would make you happy? I searched the site to find your originaly diaries and can’t find any- yes I’m sure I didn’t do it right- stupid me.
            .
I always read your comments but l haven’t found many that are positive. I liked the recent one that you’re the village bully. My comments now are just a side conversation so please don’t rant and beat me up over it…it’s in good humor I promise.

The “Scream” pic isn’t a diary but maybe we’ll all feel this way until Nov!
            ———————
I’ve been her for four years…
gekster (Diary) Thursday, May 3rd at 3:51AM EDT (link)

and have said many a pleasent comment.
If you had actually read my diaries, and followed my commenst, you wouldn’t be saying what you’re sayig.
I only go stupid when the one i comment with goes stupid first.
If you would notice, I ask legitamate questions, but some take offense, don’t or won’t answer, and try to turn the subject on me.
When I insist on them answering my question as to what they posted, they go stupid and it is easier for me to go down to thier level than expect them to come up to mine.
Notice how I am talking to you, and not down to you.
I know you can see what I mean,
After being here so long, I have developed a love/hate relayitonship with some posters.

But I will leave you with this.
It is easier for a wise man to act the fool,
than it is for the fool to act the wisw man.
When I act the fool, don’t believe I am not wise.
That you can take to heart.

          • westcoastpatriette

Oh, my gosh. I had no idea gekster was female. After all this time I am shocked. That has happened to me a number of times here now. There are some really powerful, well-informed women that comment here and you cannot identify sex by their screen name. Just shows that there is no difference between the two as far as political acumen goes.

Re: gekster. I feel like I felt when I worked in in-patient psyche. We had a patient who had been there about three weeks. He was dressed just like a scraggly biker…long stringy hair and beard, levis, t-shirt and boots, and tattoos all over. Then his psychiatrist came into treatment planning one day and informed the team that the patient used to be a woman, was the mother of three children she had given birth to, and had had a sex-change operation! We were all so shocked. That’s how I feel about gekster. hahaha

      • Christine

There have been libs/dems who have been welcomed and embraced on this site in the past. They were part of the rare breed of rational, reasonable folk who respected the fact that they were posting on a conservative site. It led to some great discussion in comments. I miss it.

        • westcoastpatriette

That’s interesting. I haven’t seen that. There is so much hostility on both sides of the political divide that civil discussion seems almost impossible. Most that I have seen come here to attack, belittle and sabotage the site’s purpose and are fairly quickly banned.
