MEMBER DIARY

Daily Open Thread (where there’s no rules against threadjacking)

Well, I decided to take a chance on doing this and we’ll see how it goes.

I wrote to the RedState mods with my idea to post a daily open thread so that we could have a place to post a brief miscellaneous comment that might not be worthy of writing a whole diary or that might just be an interesting tidbit. Wanting to play it safe so as not to jeopardize my posting privileges, I was hoping to get permission from someone to go ahead. I never heard back from anyone one way or the other, so here goes.

Before the redesign, we had several places daily that were considered open threads and much discussion and information was posted there regularly. That is my hope for doing this and I guess if a mod has a problem with it, they will let me know.

For starters, I wanted to pass on Erick’s first published piece for Fox News since he left CNN. It’s a delightful ex-po-se (pardon me, I don’t know how to execute putting an accent mark above the second e in “expose”) on the bias at The New York Times.

Feel free to use the comment section as an open thread. That means you can comment on anything as long as the thoughts comport with the posting rules.

I too miss an open thread and have asked the Mods if the “Morning Brief” is still considered an open thread…also never heard back but it was in a comment when I had a Mods attention on another matter. An open thread comment doesn’t seem appropriate anymore on the MB as it is a collection of thoughtful diaries and an open-thread comment would appear to threadjack.
    .
Please bring back a MBrief that allows open-thread comments.

Yep. I am one who used it a lot as I am always running across some bit of info that I want to share here without having to turn it into a full-fledged diary. I thought I would try doing this every day until they tell me to stop or not. Then maybe the tradition can be revived as people see a place to go each day. We’ll see.

      • carolina

I agree completely with you wcp. I’ve been spending more time at Ace’s place lately – just for the fun of it. However, their mob is a bit overwhelming.

        • westcoastpatriette

This is great news that so many miss the daily open thread; I thought it was just me but others are saying they miss it, too. I really think it helps to build up morale for conservatives…and we really need to keep it up these days.

          • fightnright

So many times I’ve longed for the open thread too – especially when a significant story in our area papers does not make the news rounds at the national level. Great to share regional conservative info, too. And I appreciated the link to Erick’s first Fox column which I straight away sent off to my right-wing email buddies…. As one who loves to have a scripture or prayer theme to elevate my day, I love your idea there too, wcp – especially to help rise above these challenging political years.

Open thread, open minds. Open gas tanks and open blinds.
Open sashes, open skewers, people living…in open sewers.
Open mouths, open hearts. All of the Open. Is Off the Charts.

Open Hagel, open Slobs, Fed’s Doors are open, for Open Robs

Oh, you can tell what I’m listening to today:
Join in with your own verse to the tune of “Everything is Broken”

Don’t sit and wait, participate! … That’s why this thread ain’t jokin!
    Everything is Open!

    Have fun and be safe!

    • westcoastpatriette

I’ll just respond to all four of your posts here, kowalski.

Loved your Open Thread poem or ditty, whatever you want to call it. Set my heart to singin’ and feeling a little better about things in general.

But I cringed at the thought of Geraldo in the Senate, then decided it’s not my problem…I live way far away from New Jawsey. :) )

      • kowalski

It’s an Open Question. ;) See I think a lot of the people who make up a large part of the “Conservative Majority” we hear so much talk about actually do think Geraldo Rivera *is* one. And that’s where all the extrapolation about “Conservative Majorities” runs right off the rails.

People hear things like that, they think: “Oh, we’ve got more than 50%!” In reality, 40% of that 50% are people who think Geraldo Rivera is Conservative because of his facial hair.

Not to take anything away from Geraldo, really. I’d prefer him light years over Lautenberg. But man, the doppler shift is just amazing. Let’s see how badly Lautenberg and Cory Booker are willing to fight each other. It could be the Geraldo Rivera Comeback of the New Century!

        • westcoastpatriette

I’m constantly amazed and fascinated by so many people who want to be considered Conservative for some reason when they just aren’t. A lot of them come here to post and they really consider themselves conservative and they’re shocked, shocked!! when they get challenged and piled on here. Some of them go home crying, I’m sure.

Reminds me of people who want to consider themselves Christian and hang out with the Christians but they are no more a real Christian than Geraldo is a conservative. People are funny.

          • kowalski

Well I’m a Christian and a Catholic and I don’t hang out with any of them right now.

          • westcoastpatriette

And the reason for that is….?

          • kowalski

Mostly financial right now. Probably because I’m also not that gospel-y at the current moment in time. It’s a personal question and I’m sorry but I’ll have to leave it at that. I will be though.

          • westcoastpatriette

I’m going through something a little bit similar, I think, in terms of where I am with my spirituality and how to practice it. Been a believer a long time and I’m tired of the same-o, same-o. In fact, I was just pondering if I want to add a scripture a day to my Open Thread diaries — something that would be relevant for conservative political activists. Hmmm.

          • vangoghssister

Please do, WCP. That would be loverly!

          • westcoastpatriette

            That did it. Will do.

      • bobmark

Been living in one of the most Rep counties in the PRNJ for 30+ years, by Jersey standards Geraldo is pretty moderate. Real conservative wouldn’t stand a chance in a statewide election (think Scott Brown). BTW Christie is not much more conservative than GR.
Really like the open thread idea, so much stuff going on that people may only have time for a link and a couple lines.

        • westcoastpatriette

Yes, and I think having a regular open thread option contributes to building comaraderie and cohesiveness which I think are crucial components of morale for conservatives. Most of us were devastated by the redesign in terms of feeling constricted and alienated from each other. Maybe this will help restore some of that.

  • kowalski

By the way, nobody can expose the bias at the New York Times too often, can they? :0 I mean that playfully. Its snot like it’s that hard to find laying around over there.

  • kowalski

More importantly, I have the following to report today:

ALL of the contentious issues and pressing problems of our time have already been solved.

That’s right. They’ve all been solved. A long time ago! The consulting and commentariat class is just continuously re-stirring the pot so they can afford to pay for Obamacare’s $20k per year minimum insurance mandate.

All the answers are in the Library – Of Congress.

    Go read them! :)

There, I just saved America billions of dollars on its next political campaign cycle and solved all the problems we have. It’s true! The answers are right there in the Library of Congress.

By the way, Stephen Chu resigned today. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. I guess he won’t be rolling up his sleeves in Washington any more, painting all our rooftops white and handing out heapin’ helpin’s of dollars in taxpayer money at the Chu Golden Wok Energy Department Buffet. That’s OK. His big problem was that he didn’t get *enough* Green Energy entrepreneurs like C. Ray Nagin on the public dole in time to protect them! His successor will.

  • kowalski

Finally, I have six words for everyone that should make them break out the Nimitz Class Excedrin:

Geraldo. Rivera. New. Jersey. Republican. Senator.

    http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Politics/The-Vote/2013/0131/Geraldo-Rivera-truly-contemplating-run-for-Senate.-Could-he-win

I thought the apocalypse ended under the Mayan calendar in 2012! What’s amazing is that he really is better than Lautenberg! By an incredible amount!

    • carolina

I’d rather have Geraldo than another typical dem any day. Maybe he can help the GOP with their ‘public relations’ = get some (free) press coverage.

      • eltuba

He does put the “Q” in Qwazy.

  • kowalski

By the way I’m having a lot of fun in the Friday Open Thread. I think I posted enough for four or five open threads, actually. I like the idea of having them every once in a while, I think WCP is right to try it. I hope I didn’t kill the idea with overexuberance.

    • westcoastpatriette

Not at all as far as I’m concerned. Enjoyed every word. You must have taken that time off from here to recharge your batteries and it shows. A happier kowalski emerged from the dungeon of gun-control overload anger. :) )

      • kowalski

Well I went and did some shooting this week and I’m building a new holster for one of my pistols, and I feel a lot better. I’ve been waiting now for a couple of weeks to get started on my Old Faithful holster kit. I’ve got people on gun forums that I’ve promised pictures to, and this weekend it looks like I’ll be able to get it done. http://oldfaithfulholsters.com/

  • Bill S

I have no issue with it. We just never think to do it.

    • kowalski

Well I went a little bananas here with this one but seriously – I think there’s a place for them. A lot of the time you want to post something that’s not diary entry worthy, not really a comment, but nevertheless it’s participatory and interesting. We’ve kind of lost that recently here at Redstate.

A lot of the time they’re just supposed to be fun. We shouldn’t lose the fun.

Open threads are kind of the “watercooler” on a blog and I agree with WCP I miss ‘em.

      • westcoastpatriette

Oh, you gave me a great idea for the title each day. RedState’s Watercooler Daily Open Thread.

        • kowalski

Glad I could help :) . Open threads are supposed to be fun.

        • checkmate2012

Can I coin a term: nrat. If one is conversing but might threadjack, tell them to see you on nrat: “no rules against threadjacking”.
          .

        • checkmate2012

wcp, being democracy minded people on RS and IF the site owners don’t re-establish the open-thread idea, how about on tomorrow’s OT you start with a title search?
          .
I’m not thrilled with the new title and haven’t come up with a new one yet, but many are smarter than I am on RS. Watercooler seems a bit passe to me but I could be wrong…again. Are you open to suggestions on naming the OT if you are the one to keep it alive daily?
          .
I like RS OT, like overtime in sports.

  • gawken

    Possible linkage, anyone?

Bob Menendez takes trips to the DR to cavort with underage prostitutes. He flies there on the private jet of his Miami Beach doctor friend. who still somehow manages to hang onto his plane while dealing with an $11 million IRS lien. The Clinton have stayed at the doctor’s villa in the DR. Another old Dem crook, Charlie Rangel, goes to the DR. The doctor’s offices in Miami aren’t too far from the clinic operated by A-Rod’s drug dealer. Also, Menendez’ doctor doesn’t live that far from A-Rod.

Conclusions: Charlie Rangel won’t get voted into the baseball Hall of Fame, and Senator Menendez supplied Sammy Sosa with PEDs.

    • kowalski

Anything can happen in the Dominican Republic. They have it all!

      http://www.godominicanrepublic.com/rd/?lang=en&idioma=1

Besides, I’m sure Menendez was just flying to the Dominican Republic with Mangen or Mengel or Mangorn or whatever to discuss the flight envelope of the CL-600 Challenger and the company that owns it, “DRM Med Assist.” Really the best source for new information on Menendez is CREW. I’m sure Melanie Sloan can help you connect the dots.

  • westcoastpatriette

Here’s an interesting tidbit. Sen. Grassley introduced E-Verify bill in the senate today. http://dailycaller.com/2013/02/01/sen-grassley-pushes-to-make-e-verify-mandatory-for-employers/

    • kowalski

I support e-Verify. Expect big opposition from the wine-sipping liberals – although really they shouldn’t. They charge enough for their wine and other products and it’s a good idea:

‘It would also increase the penalty for employers who hire undocumented
workers, and require employers to check the status of all current
employees and new hires within three years.’

Whew, that’s a tough one there. Three years to check the status?

I wonder which businesses in this country really think that kind of legislation is inappropriate?

      • cbartlett

Great idea, wcp! Glad you tried it today. Look forward to interesting posts!

Random thought on e-verify: As someone who processes multiple payrolls several times a month, I never understood how all of these illegal immigrants keep getting paid for jobs. In order to deduct wages/salaries as an expense, an employer is generally required to have a social security number to deduct and report taxes that are withheld. You can get away with “paying cash” (i.e. no taxes) for some jobs for limited time but it seems like the rules are set up to force an employer to make everyone an employee instead of a contract cash worker. I asked my CPA how companies get away with this a few years ago and she said many times the employers are unknowingly given a fake social security number. Until the first payroll reports are filed, the employer has no way to know that the SSN is not legitimate. It usually takes the government several months or close to a year, depending on whether it’s the state or Feds, to get a notice to the company. When they confront the employee, they just leave and move on to the next job. I realize some of these illegal immigrants are paid cash by individuals to clean houses, babysit, yard work, etc. but those kind of jobs are certainly not employing 11 million of them. I assume forcing e-verify will help stop some of this abuse of the system? Why have we not done this decades ago? What are the objections? Are both parties in Congress not supporting this or is it just one of them? Seems logical to me that if the jobs aren’t here there wouldn’t be nearly as many people wanting to cross that border.

        • westcoastpatriette

Those are some really good questions, cbartlett, and I wish I had all the answers. As far as why we haven’t already implemented e-verify and what the objections are, most of it comes from the open-borders people who think there should be no limits to who is allowed in and allowed to stay. And there are plenty of employers who profit from the cheap illegal labor. Then there are the politicians who use this issue to their advantage. But, there really is no legitimate reason we should not implement e-verify permanently for everyone. From what I have read, they have greatly improved the system (it’s been in existence on a voluntary basis since 1998) so that they are able to detect when a ssn is being used by multiple people much faster than before.

With respect to housekeepers, gardeners, etc., here in Cali. there are plenty of them who make a living being paid cash to do these jobs. Some creative legislator needs to come up with a way to incentivize Mexico to dissuade the illegal activity. But it would really hurt them as billions of dollars are sent there to the families of the illegals every year so I don’t know how we could get Mexico to work with us until they clean up the mess in their own country.

pssst, PttP, you’re going to love these bumper stickers. I’m not affiliated with the site and don’t know how to copy the images and give credit, so here’s the link:

Images and videos aren’t supported in the comments section, but they can still be inserted into the original diary.

      • checkmate2012

rbdwiggins, come again. I’ve put images in my diaries, still a bit tricky to left-center and wrap text, and it takes multiple attempts. But you were able to insert that MP3 into a diary that wasn’t yours. Do tell although I’m more interested in inserting images from Flickr or videos from YouTube.

        • rbdwiggins

That was just a link using ‘a href’

          • checkmate2012

Thank you and will now have to do more research as html isn’t a kind language and your instructions were too brief. Did you make a comment in “Post A Diary” and then copy it into comments? Sorry to be stupid but I’ll keep trying and give up for tonight!

    • PowerToThePeople

I do like them. Check out this one, quite clever.

      • checkmate2012

Another good one! So many clever God-loving, gun-loving, American-loving patriots out there! Oh, if you can, given an opportune time, post the first one, the “it’s too heavy to carry a policeman”…that’d be great!

        • PowerToThePeople

          Sure, here you go.
