The Watercooler ~ RedState’s Daily Open Thread

Today is day three of the massive manhunt for Christopher Dorner — the enraged cop-killer. As previously noted, this case literally hit close to home for me when Dorner took out his rage on two police officers just a few blocks from my home in Riverside, CA. You can read more about day one and two here and here.

As of the latest reports, the manhunt in Big Bear, CA is still ongoing. Police found Dorner’s truck — the one used in the Riverside police shooting — about eight hours after he ambushed the policemen in Riverside, in a remote area of the mountain community and the truck had been set on fire. Big Bear is about a forty minute drive from Riverside.

Personally, I don’t think Dorner is still on the mountain. After reading the killer’s manifesto, I think he is being very strategic and, more than likely, had another vehicle ready to use near the area he abandoned the burning truck. Big Bear is a small mountain community with limited road access and it would be foolish to take off on foot there. So, I think he is long gone from the mountain and will surface when he is ready for his next ambush.

Authorities are still not releasing much information and it is still a mystery to me how and why Dorner came to Riverside — a town sixty miles east of Los Angeles and in a different county — to kill policemen when his rage is directed at the LAPD. According to Riverside’s police chief, the officers Dorner ambushed here had no connection to Dorner.

Also interesting is how the media is making no mention of Dorner’s references to his political points of view in his manifesto. In it, he praised Obama and Hillary and literally cursed La Pierre — the head of the NRA. Guess the left doesn’t want the public to know that the latest shooting maniac is one of their own. Especially that he is a gun-control enthusiast. Hypocrisy magnified and insanity confirmed.

Let not your heart be troubled, ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself that where I am you may be also. John 14:1-3

Have a great weekend.

We ought to use Hillary as bait. After all, she said this:

“Sen. Obama’s support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again”. You can’t get more racist than that./sarc

On gun control. Below is a link to some information you may find interesting. It is a PDF crime statistics report by the Chicago Police Department (year ending December 2010)

56% or more of the crimes were committed by gang members. More than 95% of the victims and almost 94% of the perps were black or Hispanic. Yet they still vote Democrat.

79% and 87%b of the perpetrators had prior criminal records.

Here is a quick take, the cities are overflowing with violent Black and Hispanic ex-offenders and gang members that are busy killing each other. Could this be the Democrat solution to prison over crowding?

It seems simple enough. Keep violent offenders in prison longer, control gang activity and enforce existing gun laws that prohibit a convicted criminal from being in possession of a gun or in the company of other convicted criminals.

As for the assault weapons ban, the Philadelphia Police Department statistics for 2012 indicate that out of 331 murders only one involved a rifle or shotgun. It seems that the assault weapons ban is just another way to kick the can down the road. The real problem is violence, and violent criminals, not guns, especially not rifles. And since the laws preventing violent criminals from owning and carrying fire arms are already on the books, the hard job of enforcement isn’t being done. Instead, we get laws that will allow the government to harass law abiding citizens instead of having to confront criminals.

Those were interesting reads, WmCraig. One thing I noted is there were no hIspanics listed in the Philly statistics. None. Have they no hispanics living in Philly?

With respect to the vast majority of murders being black on black in both cities, that reflects what has taken place as a result of welfare programs that incentivize fatherlessness. As welfare handouts increased in the last fifty years, illegitimate births in the black community have sky-rocketed. Nearly 75% of births now are out of wedlock. These young men have no future and turn to crime as a result. Welfare programs are a disaster. And gun-control laws help no one except the politicians who fantasize that they are “doing something” about the problem.

I will have to go back to check the stats. I think they are listed as white other, but I am not sure. Philadelphia has a strong very large Hispanic community. Predominantly Puerto Rican making them therefore predominantly legal. The region itself (Delaware Valley) has a large Hispanic community with a much larger range of native countries represented. Philadelphia also has a very large Asian community. All three ethnic groups live in concentrated areas segregation by association rather than imposed.

I think that in addition to the social aspects, that I don’t disagree with, there is a reflection on the policies of Democrats as well. There policies of econ-fanaticism has destroyed any and all manufacturing and most higher paying service jobs which actually depend on manufacturing for customers. What little work there is becomes government subsidized and there isn’t enough to keep even a small part of the population lucratively employed. So yes, the break up of family is a contributing factor, but even that can be laid at the feet of the Democrat policy makers.

I went back to the Philly stats again and I found the stats for hispanics. There are two charts that address ethnicity, one for the racial breakdown of the offenders and one for the victims. For some reason, both charts separate the hispanics from the other races and they are noted at the bottom of the charts. That’s why I missed them. I wonder why they do it that way?

And yes I agree with you most of the blame for policies that hurt the poor can be laid at the feet of Dems but the Reps do not have the spine to change them and increasingly feed into expanding and maintaining them.

Oh, great. Now California’s legislature wants to outdo NY and confiscate guns from Californians. http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2013/02/08/gun-confiscation-bill-introduced-in-california-we-can-save-lives/

Something tells me that wouldn’t have had any impact on the current threat posed by the deranged ex-police officer. Given the state of affairs, I suspect they will sell them on the black market to raise cash.

  • Kyle-MI

The President is going to invite a bunch of Newton victims to the State of the Union address. I hope some on the GOP side are inviting some people who have successfully defended themselves with guns. Sure the MSM might ignore them, but they definitely won’t mention it if there is no one on our side there.

      Kyle,

The victims are dead. If the school had had bullet-proof glass, and if the principal’s office had well-trained and well-armed persons, there would be no sorrow today.

      • WmCraig

Or a security office. I work in a lot of buildings that require security. You don’t see the heavy stuff, people and equipment capable of engaging and stopping a shooter. . It is there, locked away in a windowless room, manned by two people (or more). One to monitor communications and surveillance and one or more to engage.

Security doesn’t have to be in the hallway to identify and engage an intruder. So armed security does not have to be visible yet can still be present. Professional, trained security not teachers, and not hall monitors who are distracted with the mundane daily concerns of keep order in a school;.

      • Kyle-MI

So, are you saying that the living family members of the deceased shouldn’t be counted? You don’t think they suffered any because of this tragedy?

You are playing right into the hands of the extreme leftists who want to exploit the situation. Instead of focusing on how guns have saved lives, you want to play semantic games. Do you really think that is going to help with gun rights?

  • Viet71

Dorner is the face of the future.

A troubled, well-trained vet who has a grievance against authority figures.

Think about it. The Alabama guy (Viet Nam). The Chris Kyle guy (Iraq). Dorner.

The U.S. has created a lot of mentally disturbed men who know about weapons and survival.

Adam Lanza is one problem. PTSD vets are another.

    • WmCraig

The reference below gives a detailed picture of someone who was not particularly successful in the military, received common medals consistent with those awarded to people for ordinary service. Rather it paints a picture of a disturbed man. But I would be hard pressed to extend his behavior to Vets in general. This all volunteer army is far different then the draft days referenced your ID. I am more worried about political correctness that has armed, trained and delivered foreign nationals who harbor an Islamic Imperialist Agenda.

Boxer and Feinstein have gone over the edge wanting all civilians and law enforcement in California to turn in their guns. http://www.palookavillepost.com/2013/02/07/feinstein-and-boxer-ask-californians-to-lay-down-their-weapons-during-statewide-manhunt
