The Watercooler ~ RedState’s Daily Open Thread

Not much to comment on today. Christopher Dorner is still at-large and keeping a lot of policemen and their families on edge.

Politically, a malaise seems to be setting in as Americans lose interest and trust in the leaders they sent to Washington. Same faces, same power-structure, little hope that they will do anything that helps the country.

On the Democratic side, the One has begrudgingly offered to help raise money for Congressional campaigns for the 2014 races. Obama even tossed them a bone stating he thinks he can help Pelosi regain the Speaker’s gavel. Democrats, feeling neglected and used by their narcissistic leader, are feeling a bit more hopeful as a result.

On the Republican side, deep fissures and distrust inside the party remain. Rove’s decision to press on and make himself relevant in spite of his own massive failures in the last election leaves many feeling disgusted with his inability to back down on his criticism of conservatives. And Rubios’s moves to work with the gang of eight leaves many doubting his motives and resenting the games that are once again being played to try to manipulate the public. Does Rubio think no one notices that he might just be being used as a front-man to make us swallow the medicine they have decided we need to take with respect to pandering to illegal aliens? If he doesn’t see that, he has already let the power go to his head.

But, alas, it is Sunday morning and I’ll leave you with this:

For I know that my Redeemer lives and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth. Job 19:25

The behavior of the police in the manhunt for CD is helping rather than hurting the cause of personal protection and the second amendment it would appear. I realize this is close to home so I pray you are safe. The attack on David Perdue provides a peak inside the weaknesses of any organization, police departments just aren’t as efficient as they are portrayed on television. According to reports, within seconds of being stopped and released by police officers a second police cruiser slammed into Perdue’s truck and opened fire on it. These are the people we are supposed to trust with our safety and our protection? There is something wrong when police officers supposedly in close communication to apprehend a fugitive indiscriminately assault private citizens. Mr. Perdue is white. His Identification was only seconds before validated. What I don’t understand is why he was even asked for his ID, except possibly to insure that the vehicle was properly registered. It should be apparent to any police officer that Mr. Perdue could not be the fugitive.

Which makes me wonder, why on earth would we depend on the police to protect us from the risks of criminal society. My second question has to do with mental competence. My reading of CD’s miltary and police record indicates the kind of personallity that my son (TSgt USAF) would say indicates an unstable personality. From 2002 to 2006 he says it would have had to be blatantly obvious that you are mentally unable to serve your country for your career to be cut short during this time before making. So we now have another case of a mentally unstable person acquiring weapons and using them on innocent children to “make a point”. This is another situation where the “protection” of mentally ill person’s privacy comes at the expense of the citizens at large. Do we step up and ask that people who need counseling or treatment for mental disorders be monitored for dangerous behavior, or do we simply work to make self defense a more viable option and prey a generation brought up on ADHD mood altering drugs doesn’t become the real life version of Hollywood’s walking dead?

    Good vid.

wcp, you may want to check out the Johnson Family. Sang country gospel in the 1950s. I have their 1956 RCA vinyl album “Old Time Religion”. Contains the best version ever of “We Shall Gather at the River”.

In other news, I’ve just read on Reuters.com that the Islamists have launched an attack on downtown Gao, Mali in a suprise move against the Malian government and French forces that were pushing back against them in the north of that country.  The rise of Islamic extremist group continues apace.  When (and if) we manage to get past the slumlord-in-chief, we’re going to be faced with a much bigger mess than before GW Bush was sworn in as President.

As for the whole affair with Chris Dorner, I’m not really very confident in the abilities of law enforcement agencies if they can’t even manage to detect this sort of person in the screening process before he starts doing damage from within their ranks.  I’m reminded of a tale my dad has told of a co-worker who flunked the psych exam for state police work and got turned down on account of it.  What kind of standards did the state of California have over there?

I just want Dorner located and taken out, if they can’t take him in.  Either that, or he gets jumped by a mountain lion and eaten.
