The Watercooler ~ A Blessing In Disguise [Amended]

I’m running really late this morning, so, in order to get an open thread up, I will keep this really brief for now and may come back to develop this theme throughout the day.

I have gone through very painful experiences in my life. Ones that seemed pointless and designed for maximum pain and suffering. At the time, they made no sense and I could not see anything good coming out of them. But, in hindsight, I grew leaps and bounds in ways that I never would have without the major crises. And as time passed, it became clear that the negative experiences were actually blessings in disguise.

I have been wondering if that same principle can be applied to nations. Could this dark time in America’s history turn out to be a blessing in disguise? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Have a great weekend.

Amended March 15, 2:13 PST

On a smaller scale, we are witnessing a negative occurrence turn into a blessing in disguise here at RedState today. In response to Senator Portman’s unfortunate announcement that he has changed his position on same-sex marriage, kipling was able to give a comprehensive rebuttal using the infallible, unchangeable Word of God as the final authority on the matter. And that is truly a blessing.

The Watercooler is always an open thread.

I think it COULD be, but I’m not sure that it WILL be. After one term of Carter we got Reagan. It’s taking 2 terms of BO to search for our next great (and wise) leader. S/he has to be out there somewhere! (I pray)

Washington Times to launch new cable news network. Just what we need. http://www.newsmax.com/US/washington-times-news-station/2013/03/15/id/494862

It’s obvious to me that when things are going along all well and good is when people fall asleep and lost interest in politics. They stop paying attention to elected officials and they’re free to pass sneaky legislation and get away with much more. The people that would make the best elected officials usually/often have no interest in public office especially when times are good. But desperate times can coax more grass roots people in to running for public office. For people to revolt against an establishment, they must first be angered by it. Dems sweep in 2008. Obama takes office in 2009. Spends the first 1.5 years of his presidency going all in on Obamacare. Government starts messing with something personal like healthcare, many people wake up and start paying attention. A watered down Obamacare passes. As a result Conservatives between House, Senate, gubernatorial, and state legislatures sweep around 1000 seats in 2010. Obama set the record for midterm election losses. Many career hacks get thrown out and we got some good conservatives. Obama’s legislative agenda gets brought to a halt and gridlock ensues at the federal level for the next two years, but many reforms are initiated at the state level. We survive Obama’s first term. It appears people are ready to throw Obama out, but we get a batch of mediocre milquetoast Republican candidates and he manages to get reelected. Republicans keep House, Dems keep Senate but we got some more fresh conservatives elected. Meanwhile the establishment continues to expose itself by attacking anyone who doesn’t go along and get along which tells us exactly the types we need to vote out/vote in. So I think having a radical like Obama has exposed the RINO frauds within the GOP like no one else could have and now they’re running scared. They have to move right or be primaried. I won’t happen overnight, but Obama very well could turn out to be the one that made people demand conservatism be revived within the GOP. So yes we have Obama, but in having Obama we got many good candidates in other offices that I’m sure we wouldn’t have if didn’t have Obama. So I guess we could have had McCain in office calling us wack birds. We could have had a Bill-Hillary co-presidency. We could have had Romney. All establishment choices. There’s that old saying that goes: “No pain, no gain.” So if having Obama gets us a revolutionary conservative leader elected in 2016, then maybe I’ll give thumbs up at his presidential portrait a few years from now. His reelection wasn’t a mandate. He’s overconfident and making the same mistake Bush did when he got reelected. Obama is a lame duck but Congressional Dems aren’t. Obama is concerned with his legacy, they’re concerned about the next election. Waiting to see who turns on who first.

Great points, gflyer’. I’ve been thinking along those same lines in trying to see the good that will come out of this miserable time in our nation.

One suggestion, though. It would be much easier to read your thoughts if you break them up into paragraphs.

      • gflyer3364qt

True LOL I went on a rant, didn’t even think about spacing it out.

        • westcoastpatriette

Easy to do. When you’re on a rant, who needs paragraphs? :) )

          • Bill S

That’s the best excuse for paragraph abuse I’ve seen. I LOL’d.

      • Jim_Riggs

        ???????

        • westcoastpatriette

As usual, you don’t get it because you identify so much with the left???

  • westcoastpatriette

Gasp! Senator McCain, on the Cavuto show, just apologized for calling Senators Cruz and Paul “wacko birds.” Said he should not have said what he said. Must be worried that he’s losing his grip on the establishment.

    • Jim_Riggs

McCain should know a wacko bird when he sees one.

    wcp,

Got a confession to make. Even though I’ve only sometimes paid Him homage, I think God’s on my side.

I’m interested in your trials. Tell us sometime.

I’ve screwed up in life. Nothing really serious. More like being a disappointment as a youngster or young adult.

Yet, I’ve forged ahead with God’s help, I believe.

God has blessed me, despite my guilt. How can this be? And I mean guilt.

God does forgive sinners. God does love humans.

Yet so many here and abroad suffer.

    • westcoastpatriette

Good to hear you considering God again, Viet71. Your ambivalence about Him has been apparent in your posts for some time now.

As far as God being “on your side,” I can assure you He loves you more than you can imagine.

We are all guilty before God and we deserve the death penalty, (the wages of sin is death) but because of Christ’s atoning death on the cross, the penalty for our sin has been paid in full. He merely asks that you accept that by faith, and you will inherit eternal life and blessings forever more.

That’s why they call it good news.

      • Viet71

        Thank you, wcp.

  • kipling

Thanks, wcp. Even a blind hog like me finds an acorn every now and then.
