Why Isn’t Obamacare a bigger issue?

During 2010 and during the Republican primary, the number one concern and issue was repealing the signature ‘accomplishment’ of the Obama Presidency.

Perhaps the elephant in the room on Obamacare is the fact that Romney is our nominee. And yet that cannot be quite right as Romney was willing to point out the Medicare cost-shifting in Obamacare.   There is one big opportunity and the number one reason for people to not only be opposed to Obamacare, but vehemently motivated to fight for repeal:  Obama lied when he said that ‘you will get to keep the coverage you have’ .

Already HHS regulations are forcing millions of employees off prior plans, and more to come. CBO study estimates 3 to 5 million will be kicked off their plans by 2020, but that is the tip of the iceberg. Read more at

 http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2012/09/27/how-obamacare-could-harm-47/#ixzz285Ezjse3
“One-third of businesses say they may drop insurance, causing families with good coverage today to lose it. McKinsey and Co. estimates that as many as 80 million people could lose the coverage they have now and be forced to get other policies that conform with ObamaCare rules. The Obama administration’s own estimates say that 51 to 80% of those with coverage could be forced to switch plans to comply with the law’s new mandates.”

The gutting of Medicare Advantage and the undermining of Health Savings Accounts is another area where people are losing coverage. But the Medicare cost shift is even more severe.Obamacare will drive doctors off Medicare:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/aroy/2012/08/20/how-obamacares-716-billion-in-cuts-will-drive-doctors-out-of-medicare/

Another way people lose coverage is by losing jobs. Taxes will drive businesses to cut jobs and cut benefits:
http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2012/07/05/five-major-obamacare-taxes-that-will-hit-your-wallet-in-2013/

The end result that many liberals want is “Single Payer healthcare”. But consider what this means: Every single person in America on private insurance will lose the private insurance they enjoy today, and be forced into a system run by a central Government that lacks external accountability and  affords no choice. This is the last way that Obamacare will make millions of Americans lose the coverage they used to have. As insurance costs skyrocket and the system implodes, the clamor to ‘fix’ the system broken by Obamacare will be to just throw everyone on the Government system. Presto, single payer!

The end result of Obamacare is a poorer America with fewer jobs and worse healthcare. Obama’s broken promise SHOULD be a bigger issue than it is.

Several possibilities as answers to your question: Romney’s campaign does not want to counter or explain away the inevitable Dem ads with “But Mitt Romney’s health-care plan in Massachusetts…” or “But that isn’t what Mitt Romney said when he was governor of Massachusetts…”

    Or:

There is no intention of repealing MAObamaCare in a Romney presidency, only tinkering with it.

    Or:

They think anti-China ads are more effective – ads which I am STILL seeing here in Ohio, while the Dems keep hitting with “Romney trashes 47% of hard-working Americans and calls them slackers, even though they pay sales taxes and property taxes and Social Security taxes!”

    • 10ab

You have articulated so well what has been spinning in my head.

    • http://travismonitor.blogspot.com Freedoms Truth

Are the China ads working … they and the military ones are a ‘meh’ to me. But then most of my adamant opposition to Obama is about how he’s a socialistic Big govt leftist who is bankrupting our nation, and #1 thing he has done to make that happen? OBAMACARE.

Oh yeah, here are more Obamacare factoids.

Obamacare is making college insurance prices soar:

      Obamacare costs keep going up:

In fact, Romney could get a LOT of mileage critiquing Obamacare and its massive taxes and spending because that is actually quite different from Romneycare. They are alike in the same way a corolla and a Hummer have 4 wheels, but one is a lot bigger and heavier.

      • Ausonius

Are the anti-China ads working? Does anyone here at RedState find them compelling? (I obviously do not.) When they first came out, the free-trade Wall Street Journal found them appalling naturally. So we will find out in a month or so! As a general statement, we are NOT seeing hard-hitting ads here in Ohio (e.g. the monstrousness of Hellth-Care) on the most important issues from the Romney/Republican campaign.

        • TravisMonitor

I dont either. Now we find from NY Times that Obama has been putting 2X the ads that Romney has … HUH?!? What happened to the meme back in June that Romney and GOP would be out-gunning Obama and Co?

          • Ausonius

Right: the MAObama ads here are constant now with the 47% stuff showing firemen, police, and old people looking grimly insulted by Romney’s voice-over. This is in Ohio, supposedly an important state. I have seen the Romney ad -( with him in a Roy Rogers shirt )- which is nice, but does not really hit BIG BRObama where it hurts. Much more effective is the ad with the woman who survived an abortion as a newborn, and who attacks MAObama’s pro-infanticide record.

If Romney campaign doesnt think Obamacare is a winning issue for them … egads, are they out to lunch. Visions in MY minds is Pete Wilson 1994. He drove immigration prop to victory. Romney COULD drive Obamacare alone to victory.
      30 days left.

I think for two reasons. 1) Other issues have been more precient like Libya, the economy and Football :) 2) Obama does not want to talk about it and I don’t think Romney does either except to say he will repeal it.

    • http://travismonitor.blogspot.com Freedoms Truth

‘Tis a great pity, because Romney could make a lot of mileage out of: ““One-third of businesses say they may drop insurance, causing families with good coverage today to lose it”

  • commonsenseobserver

Obamacare will almost certainly be a big issue in the debate if Romney wants to blame Obama for the past four years and win back the tax issue and the economy.

The China ads won’t work if peoppe are convinced that Romney is an exploitative outsourcer vampire. They have done a very bad job defining Mitt, his record and his vision.

    • http://travismonitor.blogspot.com Freedoms Truth

      Exactly. Obamacare is triple-play –
      Obamacare is an attack on our freedom, and FREEDOM was mentioned by Romney in his campaign acceptance speech but not enough in the campaign as a defining difference;
second, taxes, Obama has already raised taxes in Obamacare, anytime you sell your home, you will pay more in taxes on the gains
third, as I noted Obamacare is hurting healthcare choices and quality itself – Medicare Advantage etc.

Obamacare creates winners and losers, so of course if Obama touts only the winners and not the losers who are out of pocket to pay for this .. that’s Romney’s job. If they dont have that loaded for bear.

And btw, must be a bunch liberal trolls downvoting this stuff… c’mon cowards, if you disagree, pipe up!

        Freedom, fairness, responsibility…

      • rustyoldgarand

I’ll just say that you’re giving the average voter too much credit. Sadly, most people just don’t pay attention to fine policy details. Romneycare = Obamacare is an easy argument and an easy idea for people to understand, and that’s basically the size of it. This fight is really not a winner for Mitt. Obama is just as slippery as Clinton was.

  • tngal

Its not an issue for Romney because he can’t distance himself from it. Obama has always touted that the blueprint for Obamacare was Romneycare. Romney maintained its ok for the states to come up with plans and devices on their own, but that it should not be a federal mandate. But that doesn’t really cut it for those who don’t like either one. Also at first Romney said he wanted to repeal it, but then he muddled the message with with admitting to liking parts of it, he has his own plan for reform, etc. Now he’s back to full on repealing. As far as ads go, I’d like to see one depicting the hubris he demonstrates on an almost daily basis. Everything. Starting with his acceptance of the Nobel Peace Prize for doing nothing, winding through his fake concern on a beach during the oil spills, his chastising of the supreme court, his circumventing congress when he doesn’t get his way, Libya’s “bumpy road” issues. There are tons more. Make it a 15 minute infomercial. None of these things can be, in any way, tied back to Romney.

    • commonsenseobserver

      Hubris?
He’s just being a typical liberal career politician.

    • http://travismonitor.blogspot.com Freedoms Truth

Romneycare is to Obamacare what a garden snake is to a rattlesnake. They are not really the same thing.

As for ads and videos, there have been effective ones about Obama’s lies and broken promises. This is the best one I know:

Obama does 7 lies in 2 minutes:

Freedom’s Truth, while I certainly appreciate all things youtube, you must understand there is a certain portion of the population that doesn’t spend a lot of time carousing on the ‘net, specifically, on you tube looking for Romney ads. Heck, there’s still a chunk of the population that has no internet. My mom, mom in law and at least one neighbor to name three. And two of those don’t even own cellphones let alone a smartphone. All unable to make it to a library and too set in their ways to “learn that electrical stuff”, or something. So, filter them out. Then filter those out who only get net at work and don’t get much time for recreational pursuits while working. Consider those who only make it to a library on occassion and can’t spend hours searching all things political and prefer instead to go with changing up their fantasy football teams or scrying for porn. Then knock out those humans (?) who spend 15 hours a day at World of Warcraft. In short, not everybody is as politically wonky as the people you find on this and other conservative sites. We have access to these sites and the time to devote in search of articles, videos, and blogs. All these other people we have to reach in their environs. Via TV, school, mail, mags and best of all face to face.

        • TravisMonitor

I’m not sure what your point is. I cant fix what I cant fix.
You mentioned Obama hubris, and yet we have even better – Obama lies, and now some Obama race baiting on top.

Of course not everyone is a political junkie. those people are why we have 30 and 60 second TV ads. Rove’s group should have already had ads that cover these points in the ‘can’ and ready to fire off in Aug, Sept, Oct … and it is baffling that we are just leaving the top, #1 issue on the table and not seeing ANY ads.

IF Romney wants to win, and REALLY WIN, he HAS to go after Obama for Obama’s #1 TOP, BIGGEST TAX INCREASE: OBAMACARE.
