S Dakota Senate Race Against Tim Johnson Is Getting Interesting

"Debate or Not To Debate" Now We Know The Answer

It seems that despite promise to engage in debates against his Republican challenger Joel Dystra, Tim Johnson has reversed course and announced that he will NOT participate in ANY debates with his challenger.

In a statement Friday, Johnson said he will dispense with a widely held political tradition in South Dakota as he seeks a third Senate term because he thinks face-to-face debates will not characterize his recovery from a brain injury more than a year ago or his ability to serve another six years in the Senate. Johnson still has impaired mobility, and his articulation and ability to rapidly summon responses are not what they were before.

Johnson has assured South Dakotans on numerous occasions since resuming public life that doctors tell him he will regain his full verbal command.

Here is the link to the story in the local paper:

However, it is apparently that his faculties have not recovered sufficiently for his campaign manger to allow debates. It seems that if the public sees him in such a forum, it will be damaging to the public’s confidence in his ability to do his job.

My Aunt had such an injury and never recovered and eventually succumbed to it. It was hard for our family. I pray for Mr. Johnson and his family in this difficult situation. I am torn on how critical to be on debate participation issue because of the reasons. However, I do feel that he should debate.

and Then You Die sort of comment.

Each state gets two people to represent it in the US Senate. Sure, it’s crummy for Sen. Johnson that he had that stroke. It sucked when my mom had hers. It sucked when my grandma had hers. It sucks.

But why should the state have a Senator who is less than effective at representing the needs of the state just because he got dealt a bad hand? There are surely other people in the state who can better represent them, and it’s pretty selfish and crummy of Sen. Johnson to want to stay even though it’s apparent that he is not the one.

Just like Sen. Byrd and Sen. Thurmond. They stayed way past their “best if used by” dates.

This is one of those really tough issues for Joel Dystra; how to challenge Tim Johnson without coming off as a nasty unfeeling human.

Going tough could alienate voters who feel sympathies at the human level for Johnson, no matter what their political views are. As an aside, I lived in SD back in the 70′s and my recollection is that the people of SD are culturally pretty respectful of the individual and I’m not so sure that being tough on Johnson given his past medical issues will set well with voters.

    Quite a challenge indeed.

The MSM won’t talk about this and neither will the meatheads at dKurse.

We’ve got to get some money and energy into the senate campaigns in South Dakota and Louisiana.

that if his health prevents him sitting down for an hour to debate, how can he claim the ability to properly represent the people of SD? The argument needs to be that he should be sent home to recover without the strain of being a Senator.

It is just going to be a very tough line to walk and Joel Dykstra not damage himself as heartless. Of course since the guy who ran Jim Webb’s campaign in 2006 is running Tim Johnson’s now, that may be what he is angling for by not wanting to debate. If Dykstra complains, then they can say he is a heartless jerk.

    Tough situation all around.

… I seriously believe there should be a debate. If Tim Johnson is not capable of carrying on a simple exchange of positions and defend them, then how can he serve in the Senate? After all, isn’t that why it is called a deliberative body? Isn’t that what he is there for in the first place?

The question is how to approach the subject and not open yourself up to the heartless jerk label.

However, as I said below, that is what Johnson’s campaign manager is probably hoping for the chance to say about Dykstra.

In many cases in politics when a challenger is so far ahead he won’t debate many times his challenger. However, every election has at least 1 main debate. This is a US Senate race and not one debate on main channel in SD?

If media in SD allows him to get away with this they are not being a free press
