For her entire political career Hillary Clinton has received kid glove treatment by the press. From her time at Rose Law when she made $100,000 in a matter of a few days by investing in cattle futures to her tumultuous marriage to Bill Clinton (and her rumored affairs as well as his) to her campaign for Senate when the hapless Rick Lazio was accused of being mean to a girl in one of their debates up to her recent abject failure as Secretary of State, Clinton has been bullet proof.

Now that she is approaching the 2016 nomination as a coronation (much the same strategy she pursued in 2008) there are forces within the Democrat party which aren’t all that happy. An email exchange between Clinton’s staff and UCLA negotiating a speaking engagement paint her as a grasping, self-centered one-percenter. That this email is the subject of a story in the Washington Post shows that someone has fired a warning shot over Clinton’s more than ample bow to warn her that a primary run will be ugly.

How much does she make?

When officials at the University of California at Los Angeles began negotiating a $300,000 speech appearance by Hillary Rodham Clinton, the school had one request: Could we get a reduced rate for public universities?

The answer from Clinton’s representatives: $300,000 is the “special university rate.”

What does she demand?

We’ve all read the contract riders that detail the peculiar demands of rock stars, Hillary isn’t quite as extravagant but for someone giving lectures on the virtues of capacious pantsuits and why cankles are the next big thing they show the sense of entitlement we’ve come to expect from the Grifters from Arkansas.

We need a teleprompter and 2-3 downstage scrolling monitors [for] her to read from…Clinton’s team rejected the podium planned for her use during her 20- to 30-minute speech, setting off a scramble on campus to find a suitable podium and rent a new university seal to match.

How does she control the image and message?

By contract, Clinton’s approval was needed for any promotional materials. Clinton gave permission for the university to record the event, but “for archival purposes only.” For public distribution, Clinton’s speaking agency approved only a two-minute highlight video to upload to YouTube. “Please make sure it is available only for one (1) year from the date of posting,”

In 2012, former president Bill Clinton delivered the inaugural Luskin lecture at UCLA for $250,000. Upon learning that Hillary Clinton’s fee would be $300,000, Guy Wheatley, a UCLA development official, wrote in an e-mail: “Wow! She get’s $50K more than hubby!”
