Volcker Rule – A plea from USAA

So, I open my email this morning, and I have a solicitation from USAA.  In the 14 years that I have been a member of USAA, I cannot remember a single instance of them sending me a solicitation of any sort.  That being said, I decided to open it.  Thus it read:

Dear Mr. Roane:
Rarely in our 87-year history have we turned to USAA members to weigh in with elected representatives on an issue of great importance. But, we are now.

The U.S. Senate currently is considering legislation (S.3217) that would impose new rules on the nation’s financial services industry, including USAA.

As the leading provider of financial services to America’s military community, USAA supports financial services reform.

However, the current Senate bill would disproportionally impact USAA because we are a unique and fully integrated association. USAA is not like the banks and other companies that helped bring down our economy, and we never took a penny of TARP funds. We do not engage in the harmful practices this legislation seeks to resolve.

If unchanged, the bill would:

  • Prevent USAA from managing the association’s portfolio as we have for the past 87 years.
  • Jeopardize our ability to continue offering many of our competitive products.
  • Limit our ability to return money to our members. Last year, USAA returned $1.2 billion to our members in the form of distributions, dividends, and bank rebates and rewards.*

So, we are asking all USAA members and employees to urge their U.S. senators to amend a portion of the bill, known as the “Volcker Rule,” to eliminate its effect on a company like USAA. Please know that this legislation does not impact individual member’s investments.

Regardless of the outcome of the legislation, USAA will remain a unique and enduring association that’s all about you — the military and their families.

Please take action on this matter by immediately contacting your U.S. senator. You may click here to access a special website that will enable you to quickly send an e-mail message to your senator.

Thank you for your help and support,
Joe Robles Signature
Josue (Joe) Robles Jr.
Major General, USA (Ret.)
President and CEO

[I was going to post the link, but there is some private information at the bottom that I would rather not have running about.  No offense.]

USAA has been my bank and my insurer for these many years for one reason.  They honestly CARE for and are PROUD of the military.

To recklessly ram through (again) an intentionally complex bill through Congress – REGARDLESS of the intentions – without fully understanding and comprehending the ramifications (both intentional and unintentional) of the bill is just plain criminal.

I applaud General Robles for having the spine to stand up in the face of this Congress and Administration and ask for my help in contacting my Senators (DeMint and … Grrrr aham) in opposing this bill, not out of opposition to the majority, but rather on the merits of the bill itself.

And in light of this, I am asking you also, whether you are a USAA Member or a BoA Member or a member of your local Credit Union; please contact your Senators and tell them that you are opposed to adding regulations such as these to our laws; rather you would like to see the laws that they have already written be enforced.

Thank you.  Thank you very much.

The SEC and Fed have all the power they need to oversee the financial services industry, and that they did a poor job running up to 2008, doesn’t mean we need another takeover by the little o admin. to adjust any problems.

USAA has by far the highest loyalty from customers than any other financial institution. This carries a lot of weight if it’s socialized well.

To paraphrase George Costanza, “This is unprecedented. Without precedent!”

I love USAA and immediately complied. I think it mattered in my case, because even though I have no doubts on Jim DeMint, my other Senator (Lindsey Graham) is just the kind of Republican that could be wooed by the Dems to provide the 60th vote on a measure like this.

it won’t be the last appeal. After being a member for 40 years and having served around the world with USAA, it is my insurance and financial company. Got the message and complied with the request immediately. Hope poor ole Johnny Isackson is up to go vote on an appropriate amendment. You know with McConnell et al leading the opposition, it doesn’t have a chance of not passing.

It looks like they’re asking for a carve out so it doesn’t apply to them. I’m not sure that’s such an honorable position to be taking. It seems like rent-seeking to me. If it’s a bad rule, it’s a bad rule for everyone.

Depending on how they are organized under the tax code, they might be prohibited from the more general political advocacy that would apply to all organizations. But they are permitted to lobby where it directly affects them.

Yeah, I agree it isn’t moral or the best policy.

I’ve been a member of USAA for over 10 years and would never bank anywhere else. I sent my letter to Boxer and Feinstein. Don’t know if it will make much difference, but at least I’ve voiced my opinion.

I have been a USAA member since 1989, and not until recently have I begun to wonder when this administration would ‘muck up’ my bank and insurance company. Now it’s happening. Nothing is safe until he and those who vote with him are voted out of office.

This is legit then? If you all got them too then maybe I should.

I LOVE USAA. They have my auto insurance, my homeowners, and my mortgage, and they are one of the best companies I have ever done business with.

…many people familiar with USAA think they are not eligible, however, the company has recently opened its enrollment to ANY honorably discharged service member, regardless of rank or dates of service…..

….sent my letter to senators byrd and rockeffeffelleller, yo lucky dog yo…

  • jeffreywturner

At least on auto insurance, they almost always beat anyone on price, so check it out to see if you are eligible.

I can see a few years from now that the only purpose of the military is for transporting Obama, Biden, Pelosi, and their relatives. We might need to keep a small force to suppress violent extremists like tea partiers or perhaps to help our Muslim allies invade Israel. But other than that Obama has no use for them.

and just as well funded as the military for our country. (ref campaign speech in July 2008) I understand from Fox & Friends this a.m., Judge Napolitano said that in the healtcare bill there are 5 pages outlining a method the administration can create a healtcare force and draft doctors and other healthcare officials and put them into the “National Guard” force. Any of this sound like SS corp with the “brown or black shirts” from the 1930s or 1940s?

Just a way to organize a medical response to such events as Katrina, etc. The Public Health Service is smaller than the medical components of the military services and they don’t have a history of projecting capability on short notice. The anthrax letters incident stressed their force markedly, for example. They have teams on call 24/7, but still have insufficient numbers and abilities to adequately respond to a large event.

At least as far as insurance USAA is the greatest.

Many years ago upon leaving the military I had to move an extra car back north and was able to get a Temporary Registration from North Carolina to do so. I called USAA to put insurance on it. The Representative took the info and assured me that I would be covered but then said that USAA would not charge me for the short term coverage unless I had an accident.

I never forgot the decency that USAA showed me back then. And I have never had another insurance company of any kind in the intervening 30+ years.
