Governor Hickenlooper & Half Ass Apologies

As I said on twitter this weekend, Governor Hickenlooper is going to have a bad week. It all started last Friday when news broke that the Governor apologized to a group of Colorado sheriffs for the gun control bills he supported and signed into law. Then we found out that Governor Hickenlooper lied to the sheriffs with regard to whether or not he had spoken with former New York City Mayor and gun control activist, Michael Bloomberg.

If you thought it would stop there, you’d be wrong.

We now have, what sounds like a hung over, Governor Hickenlooper stammering and stumbling through a “half ass apology.”

In this latest batch of video we get to see, soon to be former, Governor John Hickenlooper admit that, “we screwed [Background Checks] up completely and I think we did a disservice to you and a disservice to ourselves…” Hickenlooper then goes on what is meant to be an endearing moment of self deprecation, but instead reveals for all just how incompetent and out of touch he is.

I didn’t think…this is how bright I am, I didn’t think it was gonna be that controversial.

I am not a Democratic Strategist, so maybe I am speaking out of turn here, but if you didn’t think that a state with a rather large community of gun enthusiasts, hunters, and veterans might be riled a bit when you assualt the 2nd Amendment, you are either not paying attention, drunk, or both.

Which brings me to my next point. As seen in the video, Hickenlooper admits that he didn’t even know the Colorado sheriffs were actively opposed to the various gun control laws – while debated, passed, and signed into law – until well after the fact.

In the transcript of the recording, Hickenlooper also admits that his party was working without the facts, and failed to gather the facts until it was too late.

So we were forming legislation without basic facts, which I think is a bad idea in every case…and took almost a month to get all the facts. By that time I pissed you guys off…you know…they already passed legislation…that I said I was gonna sign…

This should be shocking, and it probably would be to many who don’t follow politics on a daily basis, alas I have paid attention. Governor Hickenlooper has been an absentee leader, a waffler whose legacy is TBD. Nothing but a puppet for those who control the Colorado Democratic Party.

I once saw Hickenlooper’s veto pen on the side of a milk carton.

But I digress…

What I do find a bit shocking is that even though Hickenlooper himself admitted that they lacked the facts, his spokesman, Eric Brown, is now out calling one of the sheriffs a liar for noting this fact.

Brown said the Montezuma County sheriff misquoted Hickenlooper when he wrote that “the governor admitted his office did not research the gun legislation until after it was passed.” Brown also said the governor, while admitting he was surprised by the controversy, did not say as the sheriff maintains that “had he known, he would not have endorsed the new gun laws without more research.”

Governor John Hickenlooper

Eric Brown really should subscribe to Revealing Politics if he hasn’t already. It is rather ridiculous for Brown to claim what he has when we have a video of Governor Hickenlooper saying, “by the time we got that information it was too late. You know we made the decision without having that discussion and without having that information.”

These are not positive signs for an incumbent governor headed into reelection. It has the appearance of the rudderless ship set adrift upon the political landscape.

Which is fine by me, I vote Republican.

You can check out the full transcript of the video below, I figured it would make good twitter fodder for all of you activists out there. #copolitics

I would say…in the gun stuff that we…certainly could’ve done a better job and I think that the…I didn’t…this is…I’m not defending this…there’s no…I didn’t find out the sheriffs were trying to talk to me until a week afterwards…10 days afterwards…by that time…all the…whatever was gonna hit the fan had hit it. (long pause) I certainly still you know… and I’m happy to sit down anytime you want…I mean…universal background checks…I’ll tell you the funny story…and it is a weird…I think we screwed that up completely and I think we did a disservice to you and a disservice to ourselves…

I didn’t think…this is how bright I am, I didn’t think it was gonna be that controversial.

I don’t know why…you know there were a thousand things going on…there were 10 other issues we were dealing with…I wasn’t…I guess I didn’t get it…

So we were forming legislation without basic facts, which I think is a bad idea in every case…and took almost a month to get all the facts. By that time I pissed you guys off…you know…they already passed legislation…that I said I was gonna sign…

The point I’m making…is that by the time we got that information it was too late. You know we made the decision without having that discussion and without having that information. So you know…I had a friend when I was growing up who was always very…always a little bit off kilter from the way everyone else talked…And he used to look at me and says, if you feel the need for an apology, let this be that…Which was his half-ass way of…you know…saying he apologized…I’m happy to say, I give you my…I apologize. I don’t think we did a good job on any of that stuff.
