Democrat Elissa Slotkin flipped a Republican-held Congressional seat in Michigan’s eighth district by defeating incumbent Mike Bishop by a narrow margin.

The district was expected to be Michigan’s tightest House race with margins nearing a toss-up. Slotkin ran on healthcare and her national security credentials while incumbent and former state Senate leader Mike Bishop has painted her as an outsider supported by those without local interests. Both candidates, however, are native Michiganders.

Many considered this “Michigan’s Race to Watch,” and it gained national attention, as the district has not been close in 18 years. Now, in a crazy political climate and after two redistricting cycles, a Democrat had more of a chance than in previous election cycles.
