While it seems almost everyone in the mainstream media has been tapping feet and pacing in circles in anticipation of the Mueller Report arriving any day, some rather stark news from the investigation itself is not being met with much interest. Former White House Counsel for Barack Obama, Greg Craig, has been targeted for possible charges involving his work as a lobbyist on behalf of foreign government interests. This stems from an investigation Robert Mueller has been conducting as part of his Russian collusion probe.
The matter involves lobbying work Craig conducted in 2012 for Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, a Kremlin-backed leader in that region. Craig never properly registered as a foreign agent it is alleged by investigators. This type of potential violation has been a recently useful tool for Mueller.
Those performing lobbying duties on behalf of foreign political interests are required by Federal law to register under the Foreign Agents Registrations Act. Amid the charges of bank fraud and tax evasion Mueller also applied FARA to Paul Manafort for some of his lobbying projects, which was also being done on behalf of Ukraine. Manafort was instrumental in getting Craig this work and Craig left his law firm once the Manafort connection became known to the partners.
Before his work inside the Obama administration Craig served as assistant to President Clinton and also served as his Special Counsel, specifically working during the impeach defense team. When Craig declared he was backing Obama in the Democratic primary it drew heavy attention, considering his longtime work on behalf of the Clintons.
The facts here surrounding Greg Craig mirror the Manafort charges in a couple of ways. The investigation and potential charges involve lobbying and financial work, not anything involving collusion nor electoral influence. His work under consideration is clearly ahead of the 2016 election, and therefore not connected in any way to the Presidential run — for either candidate.
The press is notably muted in reporting on this particular development, as well as an extended investigation by Mueller involving another Democrat operative. The law firm The Podesta Group, headed by Democrat fixture Tony Podesta, brother to John Podesta who was a primary figure in Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, is being looked into for similar questions of properly registering after doing lobbying work on behalf of Ukrainian interests.
Two major Democratic party players are named in the Mueller investigation, and there is no such interest from the general media. While the bulk of Manafort’s charges involve mostly personal business work predating his work on the Trump campaign he is routinely held up as proof of collusion in the campaign with Russia.
Tellingly, the involvement of Democratic party players in the same type of work, and being possibly charged as a result of Robert Mueller’s efforts, is not generating announcements of Bombshell reporting. The press is entirely focused on the incoming Mueller Report, yet they are notably quiet about the involvement of players from the Democrat side. The Craig and Podesta issues are of little interest, since focusing on them would diminish the import of Manafort’s charges, to say nothing on how those will not aid in the desire to invalidate the Trump Presidency.
