The articles of impeachment filed against President Donald Trump by Texas Democrat Rep. Al Green were handily tossed aside by a bipartisan Congress on Wednesday.
According to the Washington Times, the vote wasn’t even close. Republicans and Democrats both voted 364-58, with Democratic leadership saying that while they may not like Trump’s actions, it’s still too soon to call for impeachment:
“Legitimate questions have been raised about his fitness to lead this nation. Right now, Congressional committees continue to be deeply engaged in investigations into the President’s actions both before and after his inauguration,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer said in a joint statement. “The special counsel’s investigation is moving forward as well, and those inquiries should be allowed to continue. Now is not the time to consider articles of impeachment.”
They said right now, Democrats should focus their energy on fighting the GOP’s tax bill and promoting jobs ahead of the mid-term elections next year.
Green was obviously among the 58 Democrats that voted to impeach Trump. According to the Washington Times, Green reasoned that “Trump is inciting hatred and bigotry and is dividing Americans based on race and other traits,” and therefore warrants impeachment.
“I love my country,” Green wrote in a letter to House members. “For this reason, I will bring articles of impeachment to a vote in the House of Representatives.”
Green says he believes that history will look at him kindly for his attempt to impeach Trump.
