Of all the people who would come to Israel’s defense, you wouldn’t think to put Rosanne Barr on the top of the list. Yet when famed musical artist Lorde canceled her concert in Tel Aviv over pressure from anti-Israel outrage brigades, Barr wasn’t shy about hitting Lorde with a few heavy words.
Lorde was scheduled to perform in Tel Aviv in June of 2018. Lorde soon found herself at the business end of anti-Israel activists who continuously pressured her to cancel the show. Oddly enough, her shows in Russia — where human rights are too often an afterthought — are still scheduled.
According to the Jerusalem Post, Lorde reached this decision after much reading and consulting with people close to her.
“I have had a lot of discussions with people holding many views, and I think the right decision at this time is to cancel the show,” she wrote.
Lorde says that she prides herself on being an “informed young citizen,” but of her decision to play in Tel Aviv she noted, “I’m not too proud to admit I didn’t make the right call on this one.”
“Tel Aviv, it’s been a dream of mine to visit this beautiful part of the world for many years, and I’m truly sorry to reverse my commitment to come play for you. I hope one day we can all dance,” added Lorde.
Many responded negatively to Lorde’s decision to cancel her Israel show, including Israeli Culture Minister Miri Regev, who asked Lorde to reconsider her decision and free herself from any “delusional” political agendas.
But of all the people who responded, it was comedian and former sitcom star Rosanne Barr who came out swinging.
“Boycott this bigot,” tweeted Barr.
It turns out that Barr is actually very pro-Israel, and oftentimes attacks “anti-Zionist” people for espousing the hate they do. According to the Times of Israel, Barr is also avidly against the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel.
This is a total about-face from views Barr formerly held when she was hyper-critical of Israel.
“If nobody ever tells you you’re wrong, you don’t know you’re wrong,” Barr said of breaking free of her former ignorance in 2016. “If nobody ever confronts you with the actual facts, you might have no idea that you’re mouthing canards and bulls**t. It’s confrontation that keeps us honest. And without it, you know, I don’t think we can be honest.”
So it’s no wonder that Barr now holds firm beliefs about Israel being a positive force in the world, and seeing one star stand up against another over the cowardly act of caving to political anti-Israel activists is a refreshing turn.
