Democrats Don't Even Like 2020 Candidates Radical Abortion Stances, Poll Finds

If the deluge of candidates heading into 2020 believe they’re winning people over with their radical abortion stances, then they’d be horribly mistaken. According to a recent poll, even Democrats find their lack of restrictions on abortion appalling.

According to The Hill, a new Marist poll shows that when it comes to abortion, the majority of Americans in all political parties would rather abortion be kept an option solely during the first trimester. This includes 60 percent of Democrats.

In fact, Democrats are finding themselves increasingly pro-life according to The Hill:

Rather than adopting the Democrats’ extreme stance on abortion through all nine months of pregnancy, the latest polling shows a full 75 percent of the 1,066 Americans surveyed believe that abortion should be limited to the first trimester. This includes 92 percent of Republicans, 78 percent of Independents, 60 percent of Democrats and even 6 in 10 people who identify as “pro-choice.”

This most recent survey of Americans’ views on abortion was taken in the wake of efforts in several states to legalize abortion up until birth, a position Democratic politicians generally support.

The new polling results show a massive double-digit shift away from the pro-choice position and towards a pro-life stance. The greatest shift has been among Democrats and people under 45. The number of Democrats calling themselves pro-life increased by 14 percentage points and the proportion of Democrats identifying as pro-choice dropped from 75 percent to 61 percent.

Even those in the younger age brackets are increasingly becoming pro-life, bringing the split to about even:

Younger Americans’ position has also shifted dramatically and is now split almost evenly between 47 percent pro-life to 48 percent pro-choice. One month before the polling, the gap was almost 40 percentage points with only 28 percent identifying as pro-life and 65 percent identifying as pro-choice. Americans are now, for the first time since 2009, as likely to identify as pro-life as pro-choice.

Candidates who have weighed in on the third-trimester abortion issue include Robert “Beto” O’Rourke and found the idea just fine, even going so far as to reiterate his support later. This was also endorsed by Kamala Harris.

Cory Booker was discovered to support partial birth abortion in a leaked memo as well.

Only 13 percent of Americans believe third-trimester abortions should be legal according to Gallup. With that in mind, it would appear that Democrats are pushing away voters, even their base.
