This one caught me by surprise:
Savannah Guthrie made the announcement at the top of the “Today” show. Lauer has been the cornerstone of the program, one of the most profitable franchises on television, for two decades.
NBC News chairman Andrew Lack said in a memo to staff that it was the first complaint lodged against Lauer in his career at the network. But he said “we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident.”
So, in other words, it was one-and-done for Lauer. For whatever this offense was (and we have no details yet), it didn’t merit a reprimand or suspension or what have you. NBC went straight to a sacking after two decades on the job. And it appears to be preemptive, where executives were attempting to avoid something worse.
Reporters for The New York Times had been investigating Lauer for several weeks, according to sources who had been contacted by the Times.
Anyway, count me as a little gobsmacked–but not completely surprised–by the news. There are a lot of pigs in mainstream media, and obviously they’re still coming out of the woodwork.
P.S. I doubt this is good news for Megyn Kelly because they already have a chick at the helm of the Today Show, and Lauer’s replacement will likely be another guy.
Update 1: The source is Page Six, but it explains the abrupt sacking:
An NBC insider said Lauer’s alleged victim complained to HR on Monday: “This happened so quickly. She didn’t go to the media, she made a complaint to NBC’s human resources, and her evidence was so compelling that Matt was fired on Tuesday night. The victim says she has evidence that this has also happened to other women, but so far we don’t have evidence of that.”
So far, it’s unclear whether this was sexual assault or rape. Mr. Lauer has been married to Annette Roque for nineteen years.
Matt Lauer, who was fired by NBC for “inappropriate sexual behavior,” was once accused of “cruel and inhumane” acts by his wife of 19 years, Annette Roque.
The charge came when Roque, 50, reportedly filed for divorce in 2006 before withdrawing the paperwork, according to court documents obtained by The National Enquirer. Lauer left their home “in a fit of rage” and otherwise engaged in “cruel and inhumane” acts against Roque that endangered her mental and physical well-being along with repeated criticism of her parenting skills, the documents alleged.
The divorce papers were withdrawn three weeks after being filed, according to InTouch Weekly.
Update 2: According to Katie Couric back in 2012, her tush was the object of Mr. Lauer’s attention, getting more than its fair share of pinches.
Katie Couric straight-up said Matt Lauer pinched her on the ass a lot during their 9-year run on the “Today” show.
