Unfortunately, I missed the Rick Warren Saddleback confab last night due to family obligations, but have been having a grand old time reading all about the exchange.

I’m certain more people will be piling on Obama’s “above my pay grade” answer, but I found the entire exchange to be an example of Obama’s unbelievable smarminess.

The transcript is as follows:

Q. NOW, LET’S DEAL WITH ABORTION. 40 MILLION ABORTIONS SINCE ROE V. WADE. YOU KNOW, AS A PASTOR I HAVE TO DEAL WITH THIS ALL OF THE TIME. ALL OF THE PAIN AND ALL OF THE CONFLICTS. I KNOW THIS IS A VERY COMPLEX ISSUE. 40 MILLION ABORTIONS. AT WHAT POINT DOES A BABY GET HUMAN RIGHTS IN YOUR VIEW?A. WELL, I THINK THAT WHETHER YOU ARE LOOKING AT IT FROM A THEOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE OR A SCIENTIFIC PERSPECTIVE, ANSWERING THAT QUESTION WITH SPECIFICITY, YOU KNOW, IS ABOVE MY PAY GRADE. BUT LET ME JUST SPEAK MORE GENERALLY ABOUT THE ISSUE OF ABORTION BECAUSE THIS IS SOMETHING OBVIOUSLY THE COUNTRY WRESTLES WITH. ONE THING THAT I’M ABSOLUTELY CONVINCED OF IS THERE IS A MORAL AND ETHICAL CONTENT TO THIS ISSUE. SO I THINK THAT ANYBODY WHO TRIES TO DENY THE MORAL DIFFICULTIES AND GRAVITY OF THE ABORTION ISSUE I THINK IS NOT PAYING ATTENTION. SO THAT WOULD BE POINT NUMBER ONE.BUT POINT NUMBER TWO, I AM PRO-CHOICE. I BELIEVE IN ROE V. WADE AND COME TO THAT CONCLUSION NOT BECAUSE I’M PRO ABORTION, BUT BECAUSE ULTIMATELY I DON’T THINK WOMEN MAKE THESE DECISIONS CASUALLY. THEY WRESTLE WITH THESE THINGS IN PROFOUND WAYS. IN CONSULTATION WITH THEIR PASTORS OR SPOUSES OR THEIR DOCTORS AND THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS. AND SO FOR ME, THE GOAL RIGHT NOW SHOULD BE — AND THIS IS WHERE I THINK WE CAN FIND COMMON GROUND AND BY THE WAY I HAVE NOW INSERTED THIS INTO THE DEMOCRAT PARTY PLATFORM IS HOW DO WE REDUCE THE NUMBER OF ABORTIONS BECAUSE THE FACT IS THAT ALTHOUGH WE’VE HAD A PRESIDENT WHO IS OPPOSED TO ABORTIONS OVER THE LAST EIGHT YEARS, ABORTIONS HAVE NOT GONE DOWN.

The smarminess factor here for me is twofold.

One, Rick Warren did not ask Obama what he would do as President about abortion. He asked Obama a personal question: “At what point does a baby get human rights in your view?”

A less smarmy pro-choicer, a human being who has actually wrestled with the moral and ethical issues, who does not “deny the moral difficulties” would have answered that question quite differently.

For example, he might simply have admitted, “I really don’t know. It’s a difficult moral issue, and because I don’t know, I have to lean towards being pro-choice.” Then he could have gone on his little explanation about how women don’t make the choice lightly, etc. etc. That would have made at least logical sense, and shown a level of humility.

He might have gone the pandering route: “Rick, my personal opinion is that a fetus is a human being at conception. But I remain pro-choice because this is an area where good honest people believe differently, so I think it’s important to preserve individual choice on this. I don’t believe it’s right for a political leader to impose his own moral views on everyone else in society.”

He might have gone the strong route: “At birth, Rick. I know some folks don’t think that’s right, but this is a difficult moral issue, and right now, based on what I know, I have decided that a fetus does not become a human being until birth. Maybe one day, science will be advanced enough and help me change my mind on this, but that’s what I think right now.” That way, he makes all his base happy, knowing that he’s not likely to get the pro-life vote anyhow given the Dem party platform.

His non-answer answer reveals so much. Either Obama is entirely unthinking and has never formed a personal opinion about something “the country wrestles with” or he’s such a political creature that no matter what he thinks personally, he’s willing to sacrifice it to the need to get votes. All politicians are driven in some way by polls; for Obama, apparently even his personal morals and ethics are driven by polls.

Two, no matter what his actual thought, the very last thing Obama should have done here is to make a joke about pay-grades. Watch the video itself to see just how awful that response was. Maybe Obama thought he was on Leno and the question was about what flavor ice cream he prefers? On what he himself describes as a morally difficult issue filled with gravity, what he himself says is an issue that women wrestle with in profound ways, he attempts a JOKE?

Even a pro-choice voter should find that incredibly insensitive, and incredibly ugly.

Even used car salesmen know when a joke is inappropriate. Obama outdoes even them and ambulance chasing attorneys in smarminess.

What should be clear to every person with eyes, ears, and a functioning brain is this: Obama has no personal beliefs of any sort. All of you rabid pro-choicers need to understand that should the polling ever suggest that abortions are not popular, Obama will suddenly discover a real moral and ethical calling to oppose it. He threw his grandmother and his pastor of twenty years under the bus. He can and will throw YOU under the bus without hesitation.

In a way, this is reassuring, because Obama is really kinda like a computer program: he will do whatever we, the programmers, tell him to do. He can’t be accused of flip-flop, because that would imply that he had a strongly held position to begin with. He does not.

That answer — “it’s above my pay grade” — is a glimpse into the man’s soul, into his character. Obama’s soul is empty of everything but ambition and polish. In lieu of character, Obama has oratory. He has no ethics but rhetoric, no moral compass but oral fluidity. And in a forum where he’s invited to tell us about his soul on a roll, he treats it like soap on a rope.

No soul; all poll.

Even Leftists have to be ashamed.
