N.O. assessor Betty Jefferson, daughter plead guilty in federal fraud case
(Betty being Bill’s and Mose’s sister.)
Fourth District Assessor Betty Jefferson and her daughter, Angela Coleman, pleaded guilty Thursday to a federal conspiracy charge, admitting they used political offices and nonprofit groups they controlled to enrich themselves over the course of seven years.
Jefferson, 70, and Coleman, 53, were to face trial beginning March 22, alongside Mose Jefferson, a political operative and brother of Betty Jefferson, and Renee Gill Pratt, a former City Council member and state representative and longtime companion of Mose Jefferson.
Gill Pratt and Mose Jefferson still face charges in the case, and the trial date has not been changed.
Betty Jefferson and Coleman each face a possible maximum sentence of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine and three years of probation. Sentencing has been scheduled for May 26.
Two more scalps for the belt of U.S. Attorney Jim Letten.
