The Austin (TX) American Statesman is a liberal publication, but this is too much. On Tuesday (after all we now know), we’re told that (1) the Fort Hood shooter’s religion is irrelevant, (2) Islam is a religion of peace, and (3) the vast majority of Muslims don’t kill people. The Austin American-Statesman issued a Saturday editorial warning us not to jump to conclusions about the shooter–we must wait for him to come out of his coma to tell us why he did it.

It was such clueless (and dangerous) “PC” that I responded (below).

Mohiuddin: ‘Oh, God, please don’t let the shooter be Muslim’
Marium F. Mohiuddin, Special Contributor
Tuesday, November 10, 2009
At 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon, I sat on the steps of The Smithsonian Castle waiting for my cousins. I turned to my phone to pass the time when I came upon Facebook status updates, tweets and e-mails about one subject — the Fort Hood shooting.
As I loaded statesman.com to learn more, I closed my eyes, held my breath, and had one thought — “Oh, God, please don’t let the shooter be Muslim.” And then I read his name: Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan.
Is he a Muslim, as I thought? Yes; his family of Palestinian descent says he regularly attended Friday prayer, and there was also the story about the “I love Allah” bumper sticker on his car.
And, as predicted, Islam sadly became the overwhelming issue regarding the story. However, Hasan’s religion should be our last concern. It has no relevancy, except to highlight that he was teased and had conflicting views about the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. (…)

To the Editor of the Statesman:

Marium F. Mohiuddin’s opinion, “Oh, God, please don’t let the shooter be Muslim,” should not have been printed.

As with Alberta Phillips’ fake and twisted Rush Limbaugh quotes, this “PC” opinion is late to that game–and dead wrong.

Even the title of the piece is bad: “Oh, God, please don’t let the shooter be Muslim.” That’s what Marium Mohiuddin was thinking? Not, “Oh, God, what a tragedy. I hope some people are OK and they get the shooter.” She’s only worried about the shooter’s ethnicity? Would she have been pleased if the shooter had been black, or Asian, or Jewish? Anything but Muslim?

“And, as predicted, Islam sadly became the overwhelming issue regarding the story. However, Hasan’s religion should be our last concern.”
   ‘
How could you print this?

Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan murdered American soldiers shouting “Allahu Akbar!” (God is great.) Hasan reached out to Al Qaeda. He listened to the same radical imam as some of the 9-11 hijackers. He had a calling card that read “SoA” (Soldier of Allah). He told people that he considered himself a Muslim first and an American second.

But Marium Mohiuddin just isn’t interested in the facts of this case. It’s really an insult to Austin American-Statesman readers who DO know the facts (sadly, from other news sources).

We are at war with militant Islam. Hasan reached out to militant Islam (Al Qaeda, the enemy that we’re fighting). He murdered with the same Islamic phrase (“Allahu Akbar!”) as the 9-11 hijackers. Yet Mohiuddin tells us that religion should be the LAST thing we look at!

Your Saturday editorial states: “The fact that Hasan is a Muslim provoked a torrent of unjustifiable anti-Muslim rhetoric. Hassan is in a coma and can’t answer questions about the incident,…”

Maybe Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan will give an exclusive interview with Katie Couric to state his reasons. He was eating twinkies that day. He was watching Glenn Beck on Fox News. He got a GOP fundraising letter from Michael Steele in the mail and just “snapped.”

You really do need some conservative voices on your Op-Ed pages.

If we can’t say in the Austin American-Statesman that the soldiers at Fort Hood were almost assuredly murdered by militant Islam, if the Austin American-Statesman tells us to ignore all the evidence here of militant Islam and NOT TO LOOK AT RELIGION AT ALL, why are we fighting militant Islam? Why fight for America’s liberty–and why shed blood for it? Why don’t we just surrender?

Another misguided and misinformed opinion (in my opinion) and a disgrace to those murdered at Fort Hood.
