James Madison once said:

“I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpation.”

As our nation continues its illicit affair with socialism at the behest of race-baiting pseudo-dictator Barack Obama, those words have a deeper meaning.

What we are witnessing in 2009 is the slow erosion of every liberty and freedom Americans hold dear. It is a full frontal assault on liberty that should frighten every defender of freedom to the core.

Freedom of speech is under assault as Obama and his cronies seek to implement the Fairness Doctrine or something like it. It is under assault as Obama seeks not just to disagree with political opponents but to smear their reputations, remove their right to disagree and silence their voices in ways that are reminicent of the world’s most oppressive regimes.

The free markets are under assault as Obama systematically puts things into place like cap-and-trade, government bailouts/take-overs, increasingly oppressive tax rates that in many states will surpass 50% percent, and a socialist take-over of healthcare.

Additionally, Obama has consistently sided with dictators, terrorists, and thugs while pushing freedom loving allies away. See also the words directed to Israel versus those directed to Iran (“stop defending yourself” versus “we don’t want to meddle in their affairs.”) See also the words comforting Russia that we might just scrap that missle defense promised to the former Soviet states living in the shadow of Russia’s imperialistic intentions versus the backing away of protection and partnership to those former Soviet states. See also the refusal to stand up to North Korea or the egomaniacal dictator in Honduras. (I’m currently in Guatemala working in some small villages where I have been informed that Guatemalans are puzzled at Obama’s siding with Chavez and Castro instead of the people of Honduras.)

Thomas Paine, writing about those who were unwilling to back independence for the colonies in his classic “Common Sense”, could very well have been writing about the politicians of today. Paine wrote that those who argued in favor of reconciliation with the oppressive monarchy of England fell into one of the following categories:

“Interested men, who are not to be trusted; weak men who cannot see; prejudiced men, who will not see; and a certain set of modern men, who think better of the European world than it deserves; and this last class, by an ill-judged deliberation will be the cause of more calamities to this continent than all the other three.”

Darn if Obama doesn’t fall into all of those categories. Obama and the corrupt polticians (predominantly liberals, but some Republicans as well) are self-interested and not to be trusted to decide matters of state from a point of selflessness. Their decisions will always be based on what benefits them the most and not what their nation requires of them.

Obama and the corrupt liberal elites running the country are also too weak to see the truth in dealing with our enemies. They fail to see evil for evil and often promote it as good. They fail to see danger where it exists and instead create an imaginary world of idealism that doesn’t serve to protect the nation.

Obama and the corrupt liberal elites running the country are also too prejudiced to see reality. They love European-style socialism and despise American freedom. They love all forms of post-modern thought but despite anyone who believes in Christ or the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Their seething hatred leads them to desire throwing out the entire American system of government rather than to have to listen to one shred of Judeo-Christian thought because they view it as so out-dated and backwards in comparison with their bright, new shiny “progressivism” (itself a tired re-tread of socialist precepts.)

Notice too, that Mr. Paine commented on those who “think better of the European world that it deserves” are to be “the cause of more calamities to this continent than all the other three.”

The socialist, one-world government European style socialist sycophants running this country (Obama and the gang) were predicted over 230 years ago to be the single most dangerous group of leaders in America and we are living the proof of that hypothesis out daily as more and more American exceptionalism is traded in for the lesser-valued European brand of failure dressed up in emotion.

We would do well to heed the words of Thomas Paine and James Madison. Our nation is in a dangerous position indeed. We must defend it. After all, “the cause of America is, in a great measure, the cause of all mankind.” I couldn’t agree more. Let’s snatch liberty from the jaws of extinction and hand it safe and sound to the hands of our children and grandchildren.
