Perhaps the greatest propaganda coup of all time did not involve Germany and Hitler, but something more contemporary and closer to home. I am referring to the Democratic Party’s branding conservatism, and by extension the Republican Party, as the movement and party opposed to blacks. To be sure, there are and have been overt racists in the Republican Party just as there are and have been racists in the Democratic Party. In fact, an objective reading of history shows that the Democratic Party has been historically the greater of the evils. And there is a reason they portray themselves as the opposite today (read on).
From 1866 to 1966, the Democratic Party had voted overwhelmingly against virtually every piece of civil rights legislation proposed in Congress. They voted against the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments in the aftermath of the Civil War. Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson- who seem to be at the center of the statue controversy- were all Democrats before they were Confederate heroes. Democrats were the founders, leaders and lynchers of the KKK.
Woodrow Wilson (a Democrat) proudly stated, “Segregation is not a humiliation but a benefit.” As Secretary of the Navy, another Democratic icon- Franklin Roosevelt- segregated bathrooms at the State, War and Navy Departments. Richard Russell- a Democrat whose name adorns a Senate Office building- said:
“I am willing to go as far and make as great a sacrifice to preserve and insure white supremacy in the social, economic, and political life of our state as any man who lives within her borders.”
Robert Byrd, a Democratic Senator, was once a member of the KKK, yet his statue stands in the capitol building in West Virginia. Lyndon Johnson, who is venerated for passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964- a law largely written and endorsed by the Republican Party- may have had a more nefarious reason for signing the bill when he stated: “I’ll have them (insert N word here) voting Democrat for two hundred years.” And lest we forget, it was Lester Maddox, George Wallace and Bull Connor- all faces of a racist, segregationist recent past- who were Democrats.
Ah, they say, but things have changed. Most revisionist historians will point to the formation of the Dixiecrat movement led by Strom Thurmond who, after that party fell apart, found a home in the Republican Party. Coupled with Nixon’s “southern strategy,” they claim that all the racists of the past found a home in the Republican Party and that therefore the GOP is the party of racists.
First and foremost, all the Dixiecrats are either dead or have no influence. Nor did they really have much influence in the Republican Party in 1968 when Nixon won. In fact, in arguably one of the most allegedly racist states at the time- Mississippi- he (Nixon) came in a distant third.
Second, to the extent that racists existed in the Democratic Party, they will assert that people and the Party changed over time. Of course, this carries some bizarre assumption that only Democratic racists have the ability to change over time, according to them.
And was this change in the Democratic Party real? Nate Silver at fivethirtyeight.com analyzed results of surveys consistently taken over the years and attitudes by whites in both parties towards voting for black candidates. As late as 1990- well after the Dixiecrats, southern strategies, etc.- the surveys found that there were negative racial attitudes among 40% of white Democrats and 41% of white Republicans. This is 22 years after Nixon.
Today, those figures stand at 26% of white Republicans and 19% of white Democrats. So while there is a partisan gap, it is not as large as the Democratic Party and their lapdog media accomplices would have you believe. Instead, the gap today may be more accurately described as intellectually-based and one that is perhaps the Democratic Party’s greatest coup in the propaganda war: conservatism is color blind, while liberalism thrives on racial animosity. In short, conservatives are willing to vote for black conservatives, but not because of the color of their skin. It is a simple fact that there is a shortage of black conservatives and where they exist, they are denigrated as “Oreos” or “Uncle Toms.”
A perfect example is affirmative action. Over the years it had developed into lowering standards for minorities to gain employment or admission to college. The only reason the Democratic Party can really be such strong advocates for such a program is that they inherently believe minorities are not good enough to be held to the higher standards. They will argue in intellectual language from their ivory towers about overcoming institutional racism, failing public schools in minority-dominated areas, etc. while failing to acknowledge that it is Democrats who rule over these schools. Instead, Democrats would prefer we not judge people by their skills and qualifications, but by the color of their skin. That is the ironic legacy of the racism in the Democratic Party.
The Democrats have used the Republican vision of a color blind society against Republicans. Because the Democratic Party today uses racial discrimination to their advantage more deftly than the GOP, they adopt ideas like reparations, affirmative action, and even racial quotas- all ideas that true conservatives flatly reject.
The subject of abortion also comes to mind when discussing the legacy of racism still alive in the Democratic Party. Their steadfast support for abortion results in the countless deaths of black babies every year. What can be more racist than de facto genocide? It is no secret that Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, was an avowed racist who saw abortion as a means to decrease the black population. It is also no coincidence that most Planned Parenthood clinics are within 20 miles of minority-dominated communities. Yet, the Democratic Party is complicit in this genocide of black children.
The civil rights movement of the 1960’s was too momentous an event for even the most ardent, pro-segregation, racist former Dixiecrat to ignore. Just as former KKK leader and Senator Robert Byrd accepted this new movement towards equality, so did many conservatives. The notion that conservatives nationwide and even southern conservatives specifically are hidden racists who dog whistle their racist intents through policy or words serves the interests of the Democratic Party, not the United States of America.
The Democratic Party would have you believe that the Republican Party is populated by nothing but racists as Thomas Perez, the DNC chair, recently described the GOP as “the party of racism.” While conservatism venerates the inherent worth of each individual regardless of their skin color, liberalism and the Democratic Party stress nothing but ethnic and racial groups. What can be more racist than that?
So, what motivates the Democratic Party? The answer is guilt and their current characterization is nothing but a collective attempt to shed the racist guilt of their history by projecting it upon someone else. They do it by labeling the GOP and by over-compensation in their own policies. We must, they insist, atone for the sins of our past by tearing down statues, funding a never-ending war on poverty, lowering our standards of police enforcement in high crime areas, throwing more money into decaying minority-dominated cities and schools. What can be more racist than insisting that a black child be chained to a failing public school?
WE do not have to atone for the sins of OUR collective past. The Democratic Party has to get off their high moral horse and accept the sins of THEIR past and move on without pontificating, finger-pointing and psychological projection. Republicans and conservatives have more to be proud of regarding race relations than the Democratic Party and liberals. While we see everyone as individuals (or should), they see minorities, especially blacks, as tools towards an end. When close to 90% of blacks vote for Democrats rather consistently, they have done a great job of covering up their past and a greater job of propaganda and rewriting history in a short period of time.
Joseph Goebbels would be proud.
