Senator Patty Murra
U.S. Senate candidate Jon Bruning criticized Sen. Harry Reid’s selection of Democrat campaign chair Patty Murray to the joint debt committee and called on Senator Ben Nelson to denouce the appointment. The Committee was created by the recent debt ceiling agreement and is tasked with finding $1.5 trillion in debt reduction. Each party leader in the House and Senate received three selections which will compose the twelve member committee.
“It is unconscionable that Majority Leader of the Senate Harry Reid would send the message to every special interest group in the country that the road to influencing the debt committee product runs through Senate Democrats’ reelection campaign,” said Bruning. “This is an explicit pay-to-play appointment that has no place in Washington and is indicative of the backroom dealings Senator Nelson and his colleagues have been engaged in for years. Senator Nelson should immediately denounce this appointment and ask his Leadership to appoint one of his colleagues whose primary responsibility isn’t raising money and electing Democrats to the Senate.”
