I know the folks here at Redstate.com keep themselves fully informed on matters political. So…I’m bringing you my confusion in hopes that you can sort it all out for me.

I’m sure you heard the flap back in March when the President, in one of his famous Friday info dumps, let the world know that he had signed a “doomsday order” which allowed the Federal Government to seize and use crops in the field, groceries on the shelves, and to institute martial law in peace time. At the time the media assured me that this was not at all unusual. That even George Bush signed such a preemptive order and that it was nothing for me to get my knickers in a knot over.

Then the Department of Homeland Security invested in 450 MILLION rounds of hollow point bullets. I expect this particular department to maintain an arsenal but, since hollow point bullets may not be legally used in warfare, I’m not sure why they need such high-octane ammo. I let this one go too and wrote it off to my own ignorance of what is necessary in the world of security.

This week, though, I began to get really uneasy.

On Tuesday I learned that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (the WEATHER folks, for crying out loud,) has ordered 46,000 rounds of this same, Dirty Harry sort of ammunition. Within hours of this “leak” NOAA corrected the story saying that this requisition was for the use of their law enforcement arm in training. They even bought targets, although they did not mention why they needed hollow-point bullets – the kind designed to inflict the maximum damage to flesh, bone and internal organs – to successfully subdue paper targets.

The cherry on the cake of my week came when I learned that the SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION is requesting 174,000 of the same kind of bullets to be delivered to various and sundry Social Security offices around the country. Huh?

I recognize that old people can be difficult to deal with – I live with my ancient mother and can attest to her temper, but seriously, folks, I can find no possible logical reason why such a requisition might be made.

Does the article in Small Wars Journal titled “Full Spectrum Operations in the Homeland: A ‘Vision’ of the Future have something to do with it? This story, if you’re unfamiliar with it, tells the tale of what would happen if the US military were called upon to quash a Tea Party Rebellion.

So, I turn to you RedStaters. Can somebody please enlighten me? What’s going on here?
