Pollster: 'Tuberville Leads by Two Touchdowns Headed Into the 4th Quarter' in Race Against Sessions; Trump Endorses Tuberville

Trump, an ardent supporter of capital punishment, recently called for the death penalty for the man accused of killing 11 people in a Pittsburgh synagogue and Sessions has so far approved at least a dozen death penalty prosecutions over the past two years, according to court filings tracked by the Federal Death Penalty Resource Counsel, with cases ranging from the high profile to the relatively obscure. The race between former Auburn Coach Tommy Tuberville and former Attorney General Jeff Sessions is one to watch. Going into Super Tuesday’s Republican primary for the Alabama Senate seat currently held by Democrat Doug Jones, polls were showing Tuberville trailing Sessions by 5%. Tuberville wound up prevailing. He received 239,173 votes (33.4%) compared to Sessions with 226,675 votes (31.6%).

Also on the ballot last Tuesday was Rep. Bradley Byrne who finished third and thus, did not qualify. Nor did the former Republican candidate Judge Roy Moore, who was defeated by now-Senator Jones, in 2018. Moore finished fourth in last week’s primary with 7% of the vote.

A runoff election between Tuberville and Sessions will be held on March 31.

In the most recent poll, The Cygnal survey of 645 likely GOP primary election voters, conducted between March 6 and 8, Tuberville is ahead of Sessions by 12 points. It shows Tuberville at 52% and Sessions at 40%.

Cygnal’s headline reads, “TUBERVILLE LEADS BY TWO TOUCHDOWNS HEADED INTO THE 4TH QUARTER OF THE GOP SENATE PRIMARY RACE.” You can’t get too much more positive than that, it seems to me.

Cygnal reported, “A week after Super Tuesday, former Auburn Tigers football coach Tommy Tuberville has a commanding lead in the Alabama primary runoff for U.S. Senate against former Senator and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, according to a new poll released today by Cygnal.”

Cygnal’s VP of Research and Analysis Chris Kratzer said, “Starting at a 12-point deficit is going to be a big hurdle for Sessions to get over, especially if he continues to draw the ire – and tweets – of the President.”

The Gateway Pundit reported that an internal poll conducted by the Tuberville campaign shows him ahead of Sessions by 11 points. “The poll shows Tuberville at 49% and Jeff Sessions at 38%. 12% are still undecided.”

On Tuesday, President Trump endorsed Tuberville. He tweeted:

Tommy Tuberville (@TTuberville) is running for the U.S. Senate from the Great State of Alabama. Tommy was a terrific head football coach at Auburn University. He is a REAL LEADER who will never let MAGA/KAG, or our Country, down! Tommy will protect your Second Amendment (which is under siege), is strong on Crime and the Border, and truly LOVES our Military and our Vets. He will be a great Senator for the people of Alabama. Coach Tommy Tuberville, a winner, has my Complete and Total Endorsement. I love Alabama!

No matter what a nice guy Sessions appears to be, it was his cowardliness as Attorney General that brought America the Mueller Investigation. That can’t be overlooked as he tries to win back his former Senate seat.
