1. This Week in Washington
Congress is preparing a massive push to get legislation passed this month before the long August recess. People prepare in different ways. President Obama prepared for the legislative push with a round of golf while the President’s Press Secretary Robert Gibbs blamed Republicans for all of the Obama Administration’s problems. This should be an interesting month of political posturing before Congress disappears for a month of recess in anticipation of elections this Fall.
The Senate will be moving forward this week on Financial Services Reform, but need two Republicans to join the effort to establish permanent bailout authority for Wall Street and a bill establishing TARP, Jr. at the Department of Treasury. The House will work on a “Telework” bill and legislation to reauthorize flood insurance. The Senate Judiciary Committee may take up the nomination of anti-Second Amendment Elena Kagan to be elevated to the United States Supreme Court.

2. ‘Son of Moratorium’ Exposes Clueless Dem Leadership
A “new and improved” version of Secretary Salazar’s Deepwater offshore drilling ban was unveiled today. There seems to be little practical difference between this ban and the one that has been stayed by the courts as “arbitrary and capricious”.
That hasn’t deterred Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) from opening his yap and exposing his utter lack of a grasp on the issue, quite a gaffe for the #2 Dem on the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

3. Sarah Palin Endorses Karen Handel
Last August we endorsed Karen Handel here at RedState. She’s running for Governor of Georgia. We did the same with Nikki Haley.
Last month, Sarah Palin endorsed Nikki Haley.
Today, she’s endorsing Karen Handel.
Excellent move, Governor Palin.
Now you need to donate to Karen Handel ASAP. Early voting begins this week in the Georgia Primary and Handel is going to need to get the word out.

4. Schadenfreude: Robert Gibbs Edition
Robert Gibbs’ comment from the weekend is making the rounds. The White House is predicting a Republican take over of the House of Representatives.
Less than a year and two months ago, Time Magazine declared Republicans an endangered species.
My, my how things change.
The fact is that there is no such thing as a permanent political majority. The Democrats, in their zeal to secure one with racial politics, form an Achilles heel unto themselves. The Republicans, in their zeal to secure one with seniors and steel workers, form their own.
As Churchill said in his eulogy to Neville Chamberlain, “It is not given to human beings, happily for them, for otherwise life would be intolerable, to foresee or to predict to any large extent the unfolding course of events.”

5. Nationalizing King Samir Shabazz?
With the B-Cast’s latest data dump on Shabazz (who is pretty much the public, tattooed, hate-filled face of the New Black Panther party at this moment) it’s no longer really a question of if candidates are going to be bringing his case up as it is when candidates are going to be bringing his case up as a campaign issue. Disclaimer: I have not been informed that any candidate is planning to use Shabazz and/or the NBPP as a campaign issue, and I have not privately advised any candidate to do so. I am merely publicly advising it.
At this point, people are probably muttering ‘Willie Horton’ – so let us revisit that campaign strategy, after everyone watches the two commercials (links in the main post). It’s kind of important, given that the Left routinely acts as if GHWB used the time to openly accuse Michael Dukakis of having Horton sacrifice white babies to Satan, instead of simply personalizing the heck out of what was frankly a stupid policy in the first place. You can argue the merits of a furlough program, and you can argue how much Dukakis was building on the work of previous administrations in implementing it – but letting out life-without-parole, first degree murderers for the weekend is what made it a stupid policy, and if you brag about the policy as a whole you’re just asking for your political opponents to bring it up.
I bring all of this up because of the aforementioned muttering. When/if Shabazz shows up in a campaign ad the screams of racism will fill the airwaves, as will the breathless comparisons to the Horton case. Unfortunately for the Left, that’s not going to particularly help them: because the reason why the Horton ad worked was because it was true and the reason the Shabazz ad will work is because he really does advocate killing white babies and the Obama administration really did drop the charges on him.
