House Democrats Seek Censure Instead of Impeachment. It’s Not Going to Happen

Well, it looks like some House Democrats are seeing the writing on the wall when it comes to the ill-fated impeachment attempt. A group of Democratic lawmakers whose re-election prospects are at risk are resurrecting the idea of censuring President Donald Trump rather than attempting to remove him from office.

On Tuesday, Politico reported that the group of Democrats, who represent districts that Trump won in 2016, met on Monday to look at alternatives to impeachment. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi already rejected the idea of censure. But this is not deterring these particular lawmakers whose constituents indicated in a recent poll that support for impeachment could make them less likely to vote for their Democratic representatives in 2020.

The group of lawmakers includes Kurt Schrader (D-OR), Ben McAdams (D-UT), Anthony Brindisi (D-NY), and several others. “I think it’s certainly appropriate and might be a little more bipartisan, who knows,” Rep. Schrader said. He also indicated that “Time’s slipping by” in light of the Democrats announcement of two articles of impeachment.

Another lawmaker said “Right now, there’s no other options. This is another option.”

When asked about censure, Pelosi said “If the goods are there, you must impeach. Censure is nice, but it is not commensurate with the violations of the Constitution should we decide that’s the way to go.”

Members of this group reached out to their GOP colleagues to see if they would be willing to support censure. But Politico did not find out if they received a response.

Despite the best efforts of these individuals, it appears that the Democrats are all-in on impeachment despite the potential consequences. So far, American attitudes towards the entire process are not looking good for the Democrats. It seems that the only one who will truly benefit from the effort is President Trump himself, who knows that the Senate is unlikely to vote for conviction and removal.

However, it seems that the Democrats have locked themselves into this path. Perhaps they believe it is too late for them to reverse course at this point — and they might be right. The small crowd that is still pushing for impeachment might punish representatives who refuse to stay on board the impeachment train. At the end of the day, this Trump derangement syndrome-fueled endeavor seems doomed to fail. But it seems that the Democrats will stay the course, consequences be damned.
