Teenage girls across the country will probably be shocked to hear that one of America’s favorite pastimes is now a manifestation of homophobic bigotry. I hate to break it to you, dear reader, but pillow fights are now being canceled.
And it’s all Politico’s fault.
On Friday, the news outlet published its report on the Democratic Debate for those who had better things to do — like watching paint dry — than watching these individuals talk about free stuff for hours. Politico, which co-hosted the debate with PBS News Hour issued an apology to the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). Why?
Because they used the term “pillow fight.”
In the report published the morning after the debate, they wrote:
“GLAAD sent us a note yesterday about Playbook PM, noting that our use of ‘pillow fight’ when describing a fight between Pete Buttigieg and Elizabeth Warren may have offended people. That was not our intent — pillow fight, in our mind, connotes a fight where no one draws blood.”
They also included an explanation from Drew Anderson, the organization’s Director of News & Rapid Response. He wrote:
“For women and LGBTQ people at the workplace, hearing phrases like ‘dramatic,’ ‘over the top,’ and even ‘pillow fight’ during office disagreements fosters negative stereotypes and diminishes a person simply because of who they are. Disagreements happen in politics, but using these loaded terms during disputes feed into the sexist and homophobic tropes that simply have no place in our political coverage and rhetoric.”
Well, there you have it. The term “pillow fight is a “loaded term” that somehow demeans members of the LGBTQ community because GLAAD said so.
How does it feel to know that your daughters are virulent bigots? If you happen to be a female reading this, and you participated in this vile childhood ritual, you should also be ashamed of yourself. But who am I kidding? Boys had pillow fights too — I should know, I was one of them. I guess we’re all horrible people, folks.
But seriously. This is one of the many reasons why there is such a backlash against “woke” culture. The progressive left has taken something that originated with good intentions — fighting actual bigotry — and turned it into a political weapon.
Politico’s groveling isn’t a good look either — they had no reason to apologize. It is this type of capitulation that only emboldens the crybullies on the hard left that seek to wokesplain to the rest of America about what we can and cannot say. It’s not like there aren’t many Americans on the left who have grown sick of this societal cancer.
How long will it be before “woke” culture is finally rejected in American discourse? There is no way to tell. But it can’t come soon enough.
