People Are Upset a Harry Potter Character ISN'T Gay

So, when J.K. Rowling announced that Albus Dumbledore was gay, it was heralded as this huge thing for the gay rights movement because Dumbledore was such a big part of one of the biggest kid/young adult series of all time. Naturally, the movement wanted other notable and very popular characters to also be gay. That didn’t happen and they got pissy about it.

Apparently by not allowing Sirius Black, Harry Potter’s godfather, to be gay is an affront to the LGBTQ movement and possibly a violation of international law. I’m not quite sure because when I read books, I want details that are relevant to a story. I don’t want superfluous details meant to make a minority happy. What on earth with Sirius being gay have done for the series?

I’m not speaking from a position of hetereonormative privilege, either. I’m speaking from the perspective of someone who has and continues to read and study literature and its structure. There is nothing to be gained in the series with the revelation that he was gay.

That’s my biggest problem with the gay rights movement. It isn’t what they want, but how they try to get it. Inserting their movement into places that are largely free of sexuality (at most we assume the main characters, Harry, Ron, and Hermione were straight because they have heterosexual marriages and children). There’s nothing to be gained from the literature with this change. There’s no reason for it.
