Paul Ryan: I'm Only Endorsing Trump Because I'm Speaker of the House (VIDEO)

If you’ve made the decision not to vote for Trump in the general, and you have Republican friends who are going to be voting for Trump (especially if they were Trump supporters in the primary), you have already been subject to more than one round of the same tiresome conversation. The Trump supporter will attempt to browbeat you into supporting Trump with a bunch of arguments that basically boil down to, “Waahhh! You’re going to make our team lose!”

All of this is supremely unconvincing to someone who is capable of the tiniest smidgen of nuanced thought, who has already decided that a party headed by the Cheeto-faced charlatan deserves to lose. If that fails, they will regale you with tales of how awful Hillary is. If you point out that Trump is just like her or worse in all those ways, they will sigh in disgust and say, “Just go vote for Hillary, then! If you vote for third party you are anyway!” (Note: this assertion is not true and is chiefly made by people who do not understand math).

Paul Ryan will be on Meet the Press on Sunday, and NBC has leaked part of the interview. In this portion, Ryan indicated that he would not be applying any of this juvenile peer pressure to any of his House colleagues. More importantly, he pretty clearly indicated that the only reason he himself has endorsed Trump is because of his position as Speaker of the House:

Transcript courtesy of NBC:

TODD: Do you think it is that members in the House Republican conference follow your conscience? If you don’t want to support him, don’t. do it —

RYAN: Oh, absolutely. The last thing I would do is tell anybody to do something that’s contrary to their conscience. Of course I wouldn’t do that. Look, believe me, Chuck. I get that this a very strange situation. [Trump is] a very unique nominee. But I feel as a responsibility institutionally as the speaker of the House that I should not be leading some chasm in the middle of our party. Because you know what I know that’ll do? That’ll definitely knock us out of the White House.

This is as close as Ryan can come to saying out loud that if he weren’t the Speaker of the House, he wouldn’t be endorsing Trump at all. Quite frankly,
