LIFE COMES AT YOU FAST. Mexico to Negotiate with Trump on Border Wall

Looks like the North American Free Trade Agreement is back on the table and that’s not all. Seems President-elect Trump has made an impact on Mexico’s attitude towards reexamining NAFTA, when he threatened companies who planned to move jobs out of the country. But wait there’s more…. That’s not the only thing that Mexico’s government is suddenly interested in discussing either. In a rather shocking turn of events, Mexico’s foreign relations secretary has shifted from a firm “No” on Mexico building a wall, to negotiate with Trump on his plan. No I’m not kidding.

From the Boston Globe:

MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s new foreign relations secretary says the country isn’t only willing to negotiate changes to the North American Free Trade Agreement, it wants negotiations as soon as possible.

Luis Videgaray says there’s “enormous uncertainty” following the U.S. election of Donald Trump as president. Trump has pressured companies not to move jobs to Mexico, warned he would tax those who do and vows to renegotiate NAFTA.

Videgaray said in a Radio Formula interview Tuesday that Trump’s actions have caused concern, adding “that is why this (negotiation) process is so important, to dispel this uncertainty.” He said talks should start “as soon as possible.”

He said Mexico is willing to negotiate over Trump’s plan to build a border wall. But Videgaray said Mexico won’t pay for the wall, calling that “unacceptable.”

Look I don’t think Mexico is going to pay for the wall either. However at the rate that they are collapsing under the pressure of President-elect Trump, by February they could be offering to build in themselves to keep American dollars flowing into their country. This is a move by Mexico to stop the bleeding. I read “uncertainty” as code for “please don’t collapse our economy”. The question becomes how much of this public chatter from Trump and Mexico will actually become policy and does it matter?

Trump will say it matters. In fact, I bet he tweets about what a huge deal it is. Believe me.
