John McCain Was Asked If Trump Resembled Ronald Reagan, Here's What He Said

Sen. John McCain does not believe that President Trump and former President Ronald Reagan are comparable.

On Saturday, McCain sat down for an interview with David Axelrod, the former Obama advisor, for his CNN podcast “The Axe Files,” where they discussed many things surrounding the Trump presidency.

McCain was asked by Axelrod if he saw Trump as a “Reagan-like figure.”

“No I don’t,” McCain said.

“And I think it’s pretty clear that there’s a difference between, well, aren’t we killers and the guy that stood there and said, ‘Mr. Gorbachev, take down this wall,'” he said, referencing Reagan’s speech at the Berlin Wall in 1987.

McCain was also very quick to bring up Trump’s horrendous comments during a February interview where Trump defended Putin for “being a killer” by adding that the U.S. isn’t so innocent either.

“There are a lot of killers. You think our country’s so innocent?” he said at the time.

“He spoke out for the captive nations, he spoke out for the people who were behind the Iron Curtain,” McCain said when talking about Reagan.

“And after the Iron Curtain fell, there were thousands who said ‘I heard Ronald Reagan, I listened to the voice of America, I listened to Radio Free Europe — he gave us hope.”

“That’s a pretty big difference.”

McCain is 100 percent correct. It is unacceptable for Trump to ever compare the United States to Russia or to someone like Vladimir Putin.

While Trump does have at least four years to carry out the policies and leadership we saw under President Reagan, he has yet to give any indication that he will become as great of a president as Reagan was for this country.

Ronald Reagan’s son, Michael Reagan, said in July 2016 that he believes his father would not be fond of President Trump and the way he carries himself.

During that July 2016 interview, Michael Reagan said that his father “would be confused by Donald Trump and the way he’s running the campaign.”

“I don’t think he’d be appreciative of the demeaning style of Donald Trump — the way he’s treated the other candidates — because my father knew that at the end of the day he had to bring everyone together to win an election.”
