It’s looking more and more likely that Arizona will have a Democrat Senator, as Representative Kyrsten Sinema (D) has increased her lead over Representative Martha McSally (R) by more than 20,000 votes.

However, even if Sinema wins the race for the seat currently held by Jeff Flake, it’s possible McSally will still end up in the Senate.

When Arizona Governor Doug Ducey chose former senator Jon Kyl to hold John McCain’s Senate seat after McCain passed away, Kyl committed to serving through the end of the year, saying, “I’m willing to serve, certainly, through the end of the session … but I don’t want to make a commitment beyond that.”

Many have speculated that this was intended to leave an opening for Ducey to appoint McSally to the seat if she loses her race.
