The Ghoulish Glee Of The Gun Control Lobby

The bodies had hardly his the ground at Washington Navy Yard yesterday when the usual bunch of ghouls were using this tragedy as a cause célèbre to reinstitute an assault weapons ban and energize the flagging momentum of the gun control lobby.

This has become a trademark of the gun control fanatics. Anytime a gunman strikes, assuming that it doesn’t happen on a weekend night in a housing project in DC or Philadelphia or New York or Los Angeles or Chicago, it brings forth the same group of breast beaters bemoaning how our society can allow a free people to own firearms.

In this particular case, the pre-crafted press releases had results that would have been hilarious under less tragic circumstances.

New York Daily News

Aaron Alexis, who police said killed 12 people and wounded 14 others at the base, wielded the same weapon that Adam Lanza used to slaughter 20 first-graders and six staffers at a Connecticut elementary school — an AR-15 assault rifle.

CNN

A U.S. law enforcement official said Monday that gunman Aaron Alexis unleashed a barrage of bullets using an AR-15, a rifle and a semi-automatic handgun. Authorities believed the AR-15 was used for most of the shooting, the official said. The news prompted Sen. Dianne Feinstein, one of the strongest proponents of a ban on assault weapons like the AR-15, to issue a statement the same day asking, “When will enough be enough?”

NBC

When it was over, the suspected gunman lay dead amid an armload of weapons. Sources told News4 that surveillance footage showed that he began his attack with a shotgun, but was found with a 9mm pistol and an AR-15 assault rifle.

And of course the aging anti-gun harpy from California, Diane Feinstein:

“There are reports the killer was armed with an AR-15, a shotgun and a semiautomatic pistol when he stormed an American military installation in the nation’s capital and took at least 12 innocent lives.

“This is one more event to add to the litany of massacres that occur when a deranged person or grievance killer is able to obtain multiple weapons—including a military-style assault rifle—and kill many people in a short amount of time.”

Actually, there was no assault rifle used, AR-15 or otherwise. To fully appreciate the breadth of erroneous reporting read the link.

None of this really matters. The fact that the shooter had weapons that would not be covered under any proposed gun legislation, and purchased them legally, is simply a smear of humiliation on the smugness of the gun grabbers. To the people who spent yesterday pushing gun control and an assault weapons ban the dozen innocent Americans who died at the Navy Yard were simply nameless ciphers whose life meant nothing more than dying in a hail of gunfire unleashed by a seemingly unbalanced mass murderer. Their life acquired meaning only by pushing forward gun control legislation.
