The House on Thursday passed legislation requiring congressional review of a nuclear deal with Iran, handing a victory to critics of the talks who demanded that Congress have an oversight role.

Passage came easily on a vote of 400-25. Only six Democrats and 19 Republicans opposed the measure.

The carefully negotiated bill, which President Obama is expected to sign, gives Congress the power to approve or disapprove of a nuclear agreement with Iran during a 30-day period when economic sanctions could not be lifted.

This bill is folly from begin to end. We are dealing with an outlaw regime which has demonstrated time and again it cannot be trusted. Our P5+1 “partners” include Iran’s allies, Russia and China. The deal, even viewed in the best possible light, is a nothingburger. Iran is only a matter of months away from having a nuclear weapon. Obama, when given the choice between giving Iran a nuke and $50 billion and giving Iran a nuke decided it made sense to give them the money, too. The process the US Congress has voted for turns the Constitution on its head. Obama is not presenting an agreement or treaty for approval, rather the Congress must muster super-majorities in order to disagree with the agreement. Why? I give you the logic of [mc_name name=’Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’M000355′ ]:

“If we didn’t face the threats of filibusters, or the blocking of amendments, or the specter of presidential vetoes, this bill would be a heck of a lot stronger. I assure you,” McConnell said last week. “But the truth is, we do. That’s the frustrating reality.”

This is [mc_name name=’Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’M000355′ ]’s vision of “governing.” Give Obama whatever he wants so long as we pass a bill.

Obama has the legal authority to make this short-sighted and extremely disadvantageous deal. The correct course of action for Congress when confronted with a recalcitrant and petulant executive hellbent on making Iran a nuclear power was to pass a strong bill and have Obama veto it. Now the GOP has lost all right and all ability to object to the logical and foreseeable outcome of this douchebaggery: a nuclear arms race in the Middle East resulting in a nuclear war there.
