Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was on Capitol Hill yesterday for two reasons and those different reasons resulted in two different hearings. She was the object of a Two-Minute Hate by Democrats who are trying everything they can to destroy the ability of this nation to control who enters its borders and, in the process, turn it into a Democrat paradise of public assistance addicts. And, with a vote by the Senate on President Trump’s Emergency Declaration on border security looming, she was there to make the case for why the border is deserving of that declaration.

Secretary Nielsen’s testimony is encapsulated in the DHS press release Humanitarian and Security Crisis at Southern Border Reaches ‘Breaking Point.’

“The truth is that the politics and policies of open borders have failed the American people. Our broken system endures, and the ongoing humanitarian and security crisis at our Southwest Border leaves many minors and families at extreme risk of being exploited by traffickers, human smugglers, gangs, and other nefarious actors seeking to profit at their expense,” said Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen M. Nielsen. “Activist courts, congressional inaction, and criminals intent on breaking our laws stand in the way of confronting illegal and uncontrolled migration threatening our safety and security. What was a crisis, is now a full-fledged emergency.”

“This cannot be a partisan issue,” Nielsen continued. “Every DHS Secretary since the Department’s inception has sounded the alarm about our unsecured border and its consequences. The American people and our law enforcement personnel rightfully demand effective border security: building the wall, strengthening our laws, and giving the men and women serving on the front lines the tools and resources they need to keep Americans safe. To that end, this Department pledges our unwavering resolve to confronting present and ever-evolving future threats to our national security at our Southwest Border.”

The numbers say that, if anything, Secretary Nielsen was engaging in understatement.

The facts inside the larger picture paint a terrifying picture of a nation that is undergoing a massive population migration that can only be described as an invasion and which is unable to control its border.

  • New data shows that more than 76,000 aliens were apprehended or deemed inadmissible at a port of entry in February.
  • More than 2,000 aliens are being apprehended every day at the Southern border.
    • Border Patrol has apprehended over 268,000 individuals since the beginning of the fiscal year, marking a 97% increase from the previous year.
  • Our nation is experiencing an unprecedented surge of illegal alien families arriving our border, with more than 40,000 apprehended and deemed inadmissible in February.
    • In this fiscal year (FY) to date, there has been a more than 300%increase in the number of family units apprehended compared to the same time period last fiscal year.
  • Apprehensions of family unit aliens and Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) have surged by 338% and 54% respectively this year.
  • There has been a wave of large migrant groups flooding to the border.
    • 70 large groups of 100 or more individuals have attempted to cross the border so far this fiscal year, compared with only 13 the previous year.
  • Many of the migrants arriving at our border are requiring medical assistance, further straining resources and personnel on the ground.
    • Customs and Border Protection is executing a new directive to expand existing medical service contracts and deploy additional medical personnel to the border.

Below is the unrolled thread by Daniel Horowitz.

916,000 –The annual pace of February’s border flow if this continues. But (CBP) predicts that with the weather getting warmer over the next few months and the incentives 4 illegal immigration unaddressed, the numbers will grow larger

40,325 – A record number of family unit apprehensions in February. That beats the record we just set in December 2018 by a whopping 26 percent.

136,150 – The number of family units apprehended between points of entry for the first five months of fiscal year 2019. This far surpasses the numbers for any previous full year.

165,568 – The number of family units apprehended between points of entry since Judge Dana Sabraw ruled last July that all parents or adults brought with children must be released with the children.

During that last seven months, as many family units have been apprehended as in the previous 23 months.

2,023% – The percentage increase in monthly family unit apprehensions since the low of the “Trump effect” in April 2017 through February 2019. Yes: 2,023 percent increase.

311% – The percentage increase in family units apprehended by Border Patrol for the first five months of this fiscal year over the first five months of last fiscal year.

97% – The total percentage increase in all illegal alien apprehensions for the first five months of this fiscal year over the first five months of last fiscal year.

1689% – the increase in family units apprehended in the El Paso sector for the first five months of fiscal year 2019 over the same period last year.

The Democrats were limited to heaping opprobrium on Secretary Nielsen for trying to do a nearly impossible job while hamstrung at every turn. It can be summed up in this:

Why the administration isn’t doing a better job of making sure this stuff is front and center on the news every day I don’t know. But when you’ve reached the point where the immigration flow has literally overwhelmed our ability to stop it, to deal with detainees, and to adjudicate immigration acts were are acting like a Marine rifle squad at Chosin Reservoir watching a ChiCom Field Army roll down on them.

If what Secretary Nielsen described cannot be called an emergency, the word has ceased to have meaning.
