After terrorists forever changed the skyline of New York on 9/11, then-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani emerged as a rock for his city and the nation.

He was inspirational, which makes this descent into Trump-fueled delusion so much more tragic.

Giuliani, acting as Trump surrogate, appeared on ABC’s “This Week” and embarrassingly compared Donald Trump to Ronald Reagan.

He suggested that Trump’s comments about being “nice” to Russian President Vladimir Putin were contingent on Putin continuing to give him compliments.

So we can take from this that if Putin were ever to say anything less than complimentary about Trump, the love affair would be off, and Trump would take to Twitter for a late night round of mean tweets.

Just like Reagan.

“Gorbachev was a killer, just like Putin is a killer,” Giuliani told George Stephanopoulos. “But that ended the Cold War without firing a shot because Reagan was capable of walking out of Reykjavík.”

“As Trump made clear the other night in Pensacola, he’s perfect with walking out of a deal if it’s not in the best interests of the United States,” he continued. “Wouldn’t be the first time he walked out of a deal, and generally … when he walks out of a deal, they come back on his terms, just like they did with Reagan and Reykjavík.”

Somehow, I just don’t see the comparison that Trump’s acolytes keep insisting is there.

Giuliani believes that the love affair between Trump and Putin will lead to a strengthened bond towards defeating ISIS.

“He’ll be negotiating with Putin the way Reagan did, from a position of strength, rather than the president, who’s negotiating with him — to the extent that he does, they did over Syria, from a position of weakness,” he said.

This kind of specious thinking will not lead us to victory, and may very well lead us to certain ruin.

Perhaps Mayor Giuliani should just sit the rest of this election out.
