OH, NO! Nuclear Doomsday Clock Just Got Moved Closer To Midnight

Who’s up for a little apocalypse party?

Ok. I probably shouldn’t make light of things like a nuclear holocaust, wiping out all of humanity, save for the Kardashians.

USA Today is reporting that scientists have moved the hands of the Doomsday Clock a little bit closer to midnight.

Each year, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, a nonprofit that sets the clock, decides whether the events of the previous year pushed humanity closer or further from destruction. The symbolic clock is now two-and-a-half minutes from midnight, the closest it’s been to midnight since 1953, when the hydrogen bomb was first tested.  Scientists blamed a cocktail of threats ranging from dangerous political rhetoric to the potential of nuclear threat as the catalyst for moving the clock closer towards doomsday.

“This year’s Clock deliberations felt more urgent than usual…as trusted sources of information came under attack, fake news was on the rise, and words were used by a President-elect of the United States in cavalier and often reckless ways to address the twin threats of nuclear weapons and climate change,” Rachel Bronson, the executive director and publisher of Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, said in a statement.

Great job, PRNTLY, Conservative Treehouse, and Gateway Pundit. You’re going to kill us all.

Actually, the eggheads who determine how the hands are moved on the clock are crediting Donald Trump as being the biggest factor in determining that the hands creep ever-so-closer to the moment of human annihilation.

In 2015 the hands were moved to 3 minutes to midnight, where they had previously been at 5 minutes to midnight.

Thanks, Obama.

Manhattan Project scientists, concerned about the first atomic weapons, founded the nonprofit Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in 1945. They created the clock two years later, and update its minute hand each year.

According to the group, the clock “conveys how close we are to destroying our civilization with dangerous technologies of our own making.”

We are quite a bit removed from what the world looked like in 1945. And I’ll admit we’re our own worst enemies.

The first test of the hydrogen bomb in 1953 was the last time the hand has been this close. There wasn’t much talk of climate change, then, as they recognized it as what it was: Weather.

Still, Donald Trump’s combative braggadocio makes people nervous. I’m not shocked to see his name pop up as a core factor in threatening our very existence. He doesn’t know what he’s doing and he thinks world affairs are the same as a WWE wrestling script.

Last week he was the heel. Next week he’ll be the face.

Meanwhile, the rest of the world is watching, looking for any weakness to exploit.

How seriously you take the Doomsday Clock is up to you, I suppose. As for me, I expect threats to rise and subside, before rising again.

Humans are unpredictable creatures. Just because things are tense today, that doesn’t mean we’re doomed tomorrow. The clock is rhetorical, at best, based on the opinions of a handful of men.

But if we are doomed for certain, we may as well go out with a bit of music to commemorate the event.
