I think it was back in 2010 at CPAC that I met media provocateur Andrew Breitbart for the first time at a party. He was heading out the door and I introduced myself and he was polite but you could tell that he was in a hurry and could not really chat. However in the one-minute I had, while he waited for a cab, I mentioned how much I enjoyed his appearance a month or so before on C-SPAN. I pointed out that I had the same experience of disgust as he did watching the Clarence Thomas hearings in 1991 and how the future Justice was treated. Andrew whirled around and began raving about how that was one of the turning points of his realizing how corrupt the media was and nearly forgot he was waiting for a cab.
I guess, in a way, Clarence Thomas helped create and motivate Andrew and a lot of other people today who do all sorts of media.
In the almost-29 years that Justice Thomas has been on the court, he has kept a low profile and is rarely heard from except his written opinions on cases that come before the High Court.
A new documentary about Thomas is about to change that.
‘Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words’ is a new film that will hit theaters this week and features over 30 hours of interviews with both Justice Thomas and his wife Virginia. The film documents Thomas talking about his life and the challenges he faced during the civil rights era in the ’60s and does not shy away from the Anita Hill debacle that erupted in his confirmation hearings.
The trailer below gives you a great sense of what this movie is about and I grabbed a couple of quotes that stood out to me. The first one is this…
I was under constant attack, You’re not really black because you are not doing what we expect black people to do.
and it is followed up by this…
We know exactly what is going on here, this is the wrong black guy, he has to be destroyed.
Watching this and recalling those events from almost 3 decades ago I wonder if this country has really improved much by lumping vast groups of people together and saying they must “think” this way or they are not legitimate? I’m sure after seeing this film I will be able to put that into proper context.
Justice Thomas has been a stabilizing, rational voice on the United States Supreme Court since 1991 and this movie is a unique opportunity to hear directly from him and hear his view unfiltered by the very media that tried to destroy him.
