AARP Investigation Reveals Obamacare Will Enrich Non-Profit Seniors Lobby

AARP Revenues

An 18-month congressional investigation into AARP reveals that the organization stands to make more than $1 billion over the next 10 years from Obamacare, a law the seniors lobby supported despite opposition among its core constituency.

AARP, which operates as a tax-exempt organization in Washington, would profit from an increase in its insurance business, specifically from the sale of Medicare products to older Americans. The lucrative business has already transformed AARP into an insurance powerhouse. If it were a for-profit business, AARP would rank as the sixth-largest insurance company in America with profits of $427 million in 2009.

AARP’s revenues exploded following passage of the Medicare Part D law during the Bush administration and will continue to grow as a result of Obamacare, according the House Ways and Means Committee report. That’s because an estimated 7 million seniors will lose Medicare Advantage plans — a consequence of Obamacare — and shift to Medigap plans instead. Every new Medigap plan sold by AARP, already the largest provider of those plans, results in more royalty revenue.

As seniors begin to make the shift in 2014, AARP stands to make between $55 million and $166 million that year alone. Over 10 years, royalties would total more than $1 billion just in new customers.

The House Ways and Means Committee will hold a hearing Friday to seek answers about AARP’s business practices. Reps. Wally Herger (R-CA), Dave Reichert (R-WA) and Charles Boustany (R-LA) are leading the examination.

AARP, which collected $97 million in federal grants in 2009, denied any wrongdoing in a statement Wednesday.

“AARP is most disturbed by the accusation that our support of any legislation would be done with revenue in mind,” AARP President Lee Hammond said. “AARP has long-maintained that we would gladly forgo revenue in exchange for lifetime health and financial security for all older Americans.”

This isn’t the first time AARP has come under scrutiny. IRS investigations in the 1980s and 1990s produced multi-million dollar settlements. But those settlements came long before AARP began reaping millions from health insurance.

The stakes today are much higher. With more than 40 million members, AARP has the market corned on seniors. The revenue from AARP-endorsed plans for Medicare Advantage, Medigap and Medicare Part D provide royalties that give the organization incredible clout for a non-profit.

Meanwhile, there’s growing evidence that the policies supported by AARP — namely Obamacare — aren’t nearly as popular among its target democraphic. According to the Kaiser Health Tracking Poll this month, a majority of seniors have an unfavorable view of the law. Just 19 percent think the Medicare program will be better off under Obamacare.

that an organization I trusted to represent MY interests and to whom I paid dues for that representation chose, instead, to work actively AGAINST my interests and the interest of ALL Americans by supporting the Obamanation known as ObamaCare.

I urge all current members of this corrupt organization to do as I did and fire them. There are a number of alternative organizations espousing conservatism as core philosophy.

once we discovered only 5% of AARP’s revenue comes from member dues and it endorsed Obamacare, we cancelled out lifetime membership and received a requested refund. No “we’re sorry to see you go” or “can’t we talk about this”…..just a check in the mail. AARP has devolved into a marketing/insurance company and no longer qualifies for tax exempt status.

IIRC, AARP was founded with the intent of being a marketing organization of insurance for seniors. Ethel Andrus transformed her Retired Teachers organization into the AARP with the belief that retired people could still contribute if they had affordable insurance. It is why I have spent almost 2 decades throwing away, or returning in postage paid envelopes, all the junk mail they have sent me.

Here is the big sellout that AARP did to us seniors who they claim to represent. It was in the portion of the bill that the AARP Lawyers wrote behind closed doors. ‘We have to pass it to find out what’s in it.’ This is precisely why I am no longer a member of AARP. They lied, made a bundle of money that they keep, and expect seniors to march in lockstep with them. B$. Just another bunch of lying socialists making a buck off the backs of America’s Senior Citizens. GRAY POWER! You liberal seniors need to take a look at this and think about what they have done TO YOU NOT FOR YOU!

  • ag8tor

why AARP got in bed with the libs over Obamacare. It’s disgusting how they claim to care so much for seniors. A billion will buy a lot of care… for their bank account! Just another sleazy group making $$$ off older people. They must be part of some union. Fits their M.O.

  • gunslingr45

Don?t know how else to explain it to them, I went with AMAC because they are not a “liberal” mature organization! Yet they keep sending me junk to join and buy their insurance. I get good care at the VA anyways.
Who would have ever guessed liberals were trying to line their own pockets?
In this case I see a lot of seniors making the leap to AMAC. I am glad I did!

An 80% increase in just two years. There’s sure a lot of money in those “non-profits”.

This country is drowning from greed, most of it on the Left.

The American Medical Association (largest physician professional organization, even though they only represent about 20% of US doctors) supported Obamacare (or at least “some form of universal healthcare”) even though the majority of their members did not agree. They felt that it would increase their clout. Instead, the AMA membership is cleaning house, and getting rid of the leadership that sold us out.

  • grndpaal

Grndpaal remembers ( barely, lol) when upon turning 55 he was eligble for AARP. Boy , I tho’t, an organization that will represent me the ‘rest of the way’.

Then, I read how their $ goes to further liberal causes ,like elect as many Democrats as are running in any given election. My first $5 membership was my last.

    Here’s hoping ….

  • realvoice2010

When I starting realizing who they were featuring (liberal media stars), and then saw the head of AARP standing next to obama in a photo op regarding success of obamacare, I got the picture and quit.

  • ihateliberals

no wonder they were so gun ho to get Obamacare passed. It’s all about the moey and nothing to do with the Seniors they are supposed to be looking out for. Well I dropped my AARP membership and I don’t miss them at all. I would like to see them lose their tax exempt status. why do they have it anyway? I would rather see AAA have exempt status than AARP. AARP fits in nicely tough with the Obama gang. They say one thing and then do something else. They don’t care about me other than to take my money. Not anymore.

Go figure, the Blue President’s Obamacare hands the Blue AARP a billion bucks.

A billion here, a billion there… When Daddy Blue Bucks runs out, he just prints some more…

  • melissatx

Of course they stand to make money.

    Move to AMAC.

I’m betting that the benefits to AARP will pale in comparison to those of Blue Cross Blue Shield.
