Colorado Speaker Claims Sexists Remarks Were ‘Out of Context’

Mark Ferrandino, Democratic Speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives, claims that sexist remarks made by one of the members of his caucus were taken out of context. The comments, made by State Democratic Representative Joe Salazar, sparked an immediate backlash against the legislator and the Democratic leadership via social media outlets.

Salazar’s comments, which trotted out the highly offensive idea that women are incapable of determining a threat to themselves due to their emotions, have yet to be denounced by any member of the Democratic leadership in Colorado. Instead, Salazar offered a non-apology apology which included an attempt to smear those who challenged his comments as racists.

Ferrandino, in a statement made to the Denver Post, claimed the statements by Salazar have been taken out of context. “Whatever his words may have been and however much those words are being taken out of context,” Ferrandino said. Unfortunately, the full video of Salazar’s remarks make clear that the context of his statements do not change the offensiveness of the comments.

Ferrandino, who used the comments of Todd Akin to fundraise for Democratic state candidates less than a year ago, claimed Republicans were out of touch with women after the 2012 election. “Lessons on the campaign trail over the last year haven’t been learned,” Ferrandino said in a Denver Post article with regards to Republican bills on abortion.

Ferrandino gave no regard to the context of Akin’s remarks, as ill formed as they may have been. Instead, Ferrandino engaged in a ruthless campaign to paint all Republicans with the broad brush of Akin’s comments.

The full video of Salazar’s comments has been provided by Revealing Politics so all can see the context of Salazar’s remarks.

Apparently Ferrandino and his caucus still have lessons to learn as well.

In a mailer which attacked Republican candidate Ken Summers in the wake of Akin’s comments, the Colorado Democrats claimed Summers was on a long list of politicians who “have NO CLUE what women go through.” The mailer went on to say that “Radical politicians are running around talking about what makes rape rape. It is ridiculous and offensive.”

Additionally, in his failed attempt to unseat Cory Gardner, Democrat Brandon Shaffer attempted to tie Gardner to Akin. “Cory joined Todd Aiken[sic] in voting to redefine the definition of rape” read the email sent on Gardner’s birthday.

Voicemails and emails to Ferrandino’s office, which request Ferrandino explain how Salazar’s remarks were taken out of context, have yet to be addressed.

Governor Hickenlooper will be moderating a debate on gun violence tonight, and should take the opportunity to denounce the sexist comments made by Salazar, rather than employ the hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil strategy preferred by Ferrandino.

Good thing for Salazar he is a democrat. If a conservative would have said that, he would have been de-balled by the president of NOW and then forced by Karl Rove and Bill Kristol to resign.

    Truth.

Contrary to what he is saying, the situation he is mentioning is one of those situations where having a gun is really really helpful and can save your life.

Why do male politicians talk about rape at all! No matter what you say – even if you are correct (and this guy was definitely not) – it is going to come across as at best awkward and at worst awful.

  • gawken

Salazar is speaking the absolute, 100% unvarnished TRUTH, and we conservatives should be rushing to the defense of this brave, honest politician.

It is blatantly obvious that Nancy Pelosi, Rosa DeLauro, Jan Schakowsky, and the ENTIRE female membership of the Congressional Black Caucus ( just to name a few) are indeed “emotionally incapable” of “recognizing the threat” that Obama’s policies pose to them, their children, and their grandchildren.

You go, Joe Salazar. Say it’s indeed SO!!

  • Tbone

Ferrandino looks like a wimp who hates guns because he is afraid to shoot one. I bet I could piss on his leg and make him like it.

  • NRPax

OK, so far this is what we have.

    1. An “I’m sorry you were offended” apology.
    2. A defense of “He was taken out of context.”

They’re slacking. Where’s my accusations of racism? It should have been arrived by today!

  • Bill S

Well, he’s not trying to crucify a member of his own party, like the GOP did.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I have had it UP TO HERE with the blatant double standards employed by the Dumbocrats. What Todd Akin said was no worse that what this idiot Salazar said, but they were “taken out of context.” What a bunch of BS by a bunch of dishonest, no morality thugs. I sure as hell will do whatever I can to get some of these jackwagon Dipocrats out of office.

Oh, the race card was played by Salazar in his non-apology. He stated that he was not the
“brutish, macho Neanderthal Latino” that conservatives were accusing him of being.
Riiiight. Find me the person on our side who used “Latino” (or any racial epithet). these people are soooo predictable.

Dad used to say, “what ytou do reflects on me.”

So it doesn’t say much for the thimblebrains who elect these idiots and then keep them there!

The media as mouthpieces for DNC saw two powerful conservatives in Akin and Mourdock and upped the amplification on the rape drumbeat to the point enough voters bought their line. Coulter, Hannity, Ingraham led the charge on TV and radio. Laura as a guest sub for OReilly tried to get a liberal guest to pat her on the back and the RNC for decouncing Akin.

Mourdock made the point that is made every year at the Right to Life rally in Dc that even babies conceived in rape may have a plan set by GOD. If media covered the rally other than CSPAN they would know that.

He was crucified politically for those remarks to remove him for his fiscal direction. Mourdock was seriously going to stop the growth of government and thus weaken the DNC abilty to hold power imo. He was the stellar Mr Fiscal hawk also, so they brought down Mourdock our Knight 2012.

It is up to us alone to beat the drums on blogs and PAC and drive Salazar OUT, OUT of power. Salazar is a dangerous man and belittles women and all of us.

He does just not offend me by his speech, My reaction is more core and to the point. I want to smack down this POS and drive him from office physically.
For starters , my imagination is wild this morning.
