“Sestak Job Offer Violated Federal Law?”

Hans von Spakovsky & Cully Stimson have the top story at Human Events this morning:

Federal statutes seem to contradict a memorandum from the White House counsel released on Friday that claimed that no law was violated when Rep. Joe Sestak was offered a government post in exchange for dropping out of the Pennsylvania Democratic Senate primary against Sen. Arlen Specter.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs blithely dismissed the issue for months. “Lawyers in the White House and others have looked into conversations that were had with Congressman Sestak, and nothing inappropriate happened,” he said. But the two-page memorandum admitted that White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel asked former President Bill Clinton to offer Sestak a position on a presidential or senior executive branch advisory board. Apparently Gibbs and the White House expect us to accept their self-investigation and self-evaluation that nothing “inappropriate” happened.

The Obama Regime is lying through its teeth.

Achance (Diary) Tuesday, June 1st at 10:57AM EDT (link)

There is absolutely NO WAY the “offer” was for some unpaid advisory position. It had to be for something worth stepping away from a Senate run for and they had to feel that Sestak posed an electoral danger to Specter. If he was not a threat, there’s no reason to take the risk of stepping in. If you’re going to take the risk of stepping in, then it has to be a meaningful step. Rahm Emmanuel is a lot of things, but stupid isn’t usually one of them. Rahm Emmanuel could have made the offer just as easily as WJC, and may well have actually been the one who did it. The only reason to bring Clinton in at all is as a cutout, and it is just as illegal to use the cutout as it is to do it yourself. Another reason to have Clinton do it – or say he did – is to both silence Sestak and keep him in line because of his loyalty to the Clintons and to use the “prestige” of the former President as a shield against prosecution.

There’s really no reason for Clinton to do anything for Comrade Obama, so you must think he either did this for Emmanuel or Sestak, or, the Obama Regime has something on him that they can use to make him provide great services to them. I lean towards the latter explanation, since it is the only thing that would make him and HRC go so quietly and meekly into relative obscurity with BHO’s ascension.

I suppose its cliche to say this is "just politics", but

If I remember from back in the 70′s, President Reagan semi-publicly offered Senator Hayakawa a cabinet position/ambassadorship of some type to drop out of the California Republican senate primary. Sen. Hayakawa refused, but I don’t recall it be any sort of big deal like the Sestak offer has been. It ain’t pretty, but this kind of horse trading has always been a part of party politics. This “scandal” seems more like a red herring to distract from legitimate criticisms of Sestak’s record, i.e. his 100% NARAL rating/F from the NRA/etc.

I am pretending that I never heard that the doc fix was going to be imposed later. This is because I think that the rest of you are stupid.

“… I remember you and recall you without effort, without exercise of will; that is, by natural impulse, indicated by a sense of duty, or of obligation. And that, I take it, is the only sort of remembering worth the having. When we think of friends, and call their faces out of the shadows, and their voices out of the echoes that faint along the corridors of memory, and do it without knowing why save that we love to do it, we content ourselves that friendship is a Reality, and not a Fancy — that it is built upon a rock, and not upon the sands that dissolve away with the ebbing tides and carry their monuments with them.”

Since Reagan wasn't President in the '70s,

you might want to work on that story a little.

Hayakawa was elected to the Senate in the 70′s. The primary I was referring to was in ’82, which he eventually lost to Pete Wilson.

Anyway, that wasn’t the main point of my post. Sestak is substantially further to the left than Arlen Spector ever was; in fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find a moral radical left-winger in the senate. Yet no one seems particularly concerned that this guy is still within closing distance of Toomey in the polls?

Note the statement that there was no contact

between the Reagan Administration and Hayakawa. That is a pretty significant distinction. All this is is the AP jumping on an ill-advised remark by Ed Rollins who wasn’t even working for the Administration at the time he made the remark.

In any event, as I said above, I think the whole story is a lie. Emmanuel was practicing Chicago politics as usual and it blew up; why, I don’t know, usually Democrats are either smart enough or scared enough to keep their mouths shut about stuff like this.

Although I would note that Rollins was an incoming advisor to the Reagan White House, whereas the Sestak offer was likely made by Bill Clinton, who is, well, Bill Clinton. Not a White House official, at the very least, atlhough god knows what sort of nebulous unofficial capacity he has in this administration.

Anyway, I think the larger lesson is that, at the time it occurred, even if the press blew the offer out of proportion, it didn’t warrant anything more than a few AP paragraphs. Reagan/the RNC had a favored horse in the race, and tried to give him a boost. The idea that it was some sort of Watergate-level scandal was preposterous, and I’m afraid people will feel the same way about this if Toomey makes it his big issue in the campaign.

From your cite,

partyof1 Tuesday, June 1st at 12:17PM EDT (link)

emphasis is mine.

In an interview earlier this week, Ed Rollins, who will become the president’s chief political adviser in January, said Hayakawa would be offered an administration post if he decided not to seek re-election. No offer has been made directly to Hayakawa, Rollins said.

Similarly, Hayakawa said in a statement, “I have not contacted the White House in regard to any administration or ambassadorial post, and they have not been in contact with me.”

Clearly there are similarities between the situations, but also important distinctions.

Did Hayakawa campaign on that offer?

As an anti-establishment figure?
Then collude with the establishment to come up with a cover story, once he won the nomination?

Rhetorical questions, of course: but Sestak and the administration will not benefit forever from an ability to duck official inquiries.

Agreed

Sestak toes every single liberal party line there is, from HCR to Cap and Tax to abortion. Shouldn’t simply displaying his left-wing “report card” for everyone to see be enough in this election cycle?
