Today is February 28th. On this date in 1854, the Republican Party was founded by anti-slavery activists. 158 years later, Republicans are best known for having way too many freaking primary debates. Also on this date, in 1885, AT&T was incorporated. Today, they are best known for dropping c

Lastly, on this date in 1995, the Denver International Airport opened. And it has haunted Jesse Ventura’s dreams ever since. Oh, it’s also National Tooth Fairy Day today. So there’s that.

Olympia Snow NOT RUNNING.

swami7774 (Diary) Tuesday, February 28th at 5:12PM EDT (link)

Not an “open thread”, but just wanted to get this up there.

Today, there is a name for the political doctrine that rejoices in scarcity of everything except government. The name is environmentalism.

BREAKING - may keep Senate dem per Sabato

carolina Tuesday, February 28th at 5:16PM EDT (link)

You beat me to it – I was just coming here to post this info also.
Most worrisome is that Sabato thinks this seat will likely go dem, and take the Senate majority with it. ugh

I saw this about Sen. Snowe as well.

zachv (Diary) Tuesday, February 28th at 5:23PM EDT (link)

Thank. You.

Even better if we get a conservative from Maine in there!

Are there any conservatives in Maine?

izoneguy (Diary) Tuesday, February 28th at 5:32PM EDT (link)

Or New England in general?

Mark Steyn is about the only conservative I know who lives in the New England area, but he was born in Canada and is way to smart to get into politics.

Those who had once simpered: “I don’t want to destroy the rich, I only want to seize a little of their surplus to help the poor, just a little, they’ll never miss it!” – then, later, had snapped: “The tycoons can stand being squeezed; they’ve amassed enough to last them for three generations” – then, later, had yelled: “Why should the people suffer while businessmen have reserves to last a year?” – now were screaming: “Why should we starve while some people have reserves to last a week?” – Atlas Shrugged

Snowe had little chance of winning re-election

Last year she was polling at 33% approval in Maine. Only one in three Maine residents would have voted for her this year. Huh, she said she can’t take the polarization in Washington. I guess when she crossed the aisle to vote with the Democrats, they never did reciprocate.

A Scott D’Amboise promised to give her a run for her money in a primary. Does anyone know anything about him? Please don’t tell me he is a Ron Paul type.

Probably so she can concentrate on running for VP with Romney

Jack_Savage (Diary) Tuesday, February 28th at 5:51PM EDT (link)

She would help geographically balance the ticket in Romney’s strongholds of Maine, Massachusetts and DC.

actually

So, what do ya think, conservatives...let's have a discussion

westcoastpatriette (Diary) Tuesday, February 28th at 6:13PM EDT (link)

spurred by Romney’s comments on the Cavuto show today. He seemed to suggest that the reason this primary search for a nominee will not go to a brokered convention is because he is certain that some sort of deal would be struck by the remaining four candidates before they would ever let it go to a convention. I’ll admit I found his certitude about that a bit irritating.

Are you buying it? If not, why not? Would like to hear your thoughts and just what kind of deal could Romney be thinking of?

Praise ye the Lord. Sing unto the Lord a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints. Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: Let the children of Zion be joyful in their King. Let them praise His name in the dance: let them sing praises unto Him with the timbrel and harp. Psalm 149:1-3

WCP- I would say that is the Romney spin machine

Scope (Diary) Tuesday, February 28th at 6:35PM EDT (link)

I don’t see Newt or Santorum making any kind of deal to give him the nomination. The only one I could see making a deal with him would be Ron Paul. Paul would demand the head of the Fed. job in a Romney admin., or he would demand a big position for Rand, yes even possibly the VP slot. The fact that Rand said he would be honored to be chosen as Mitt’s running mate, and the timing of that statement, make it a credible scenario for me. Newt and Santorum are not going to roll over and put up the white flag, not easily anyway.

Ahhh, Scope, I had not heard that about Rand so

westcoastpatriette (Diary) Tuesday, February 28th at 6:43PM EDT (link)

that makes sense. Of course, that could only happen if Paul wins enough delegates to combine with Romney’s so he could cross the finish line. Romney’s comment today, though, sounded suspicious in terms of the back-room dealing that may already be going on.

But I’m with you…I just cannot see Newt or Santorum cutting any kind of deal with Romney…no matter how much money or what position he offered them. I could be wrong, though. I am just not a conniving politician by nature and I am not devious enough to think up some of the deals they may come up with.

Of course there will be a deal. If BO & Hillary can do it, so can the GOPers

carolina Tuesday, February 28th at 7:25PM EDT (link)

Someone is going to leverage his delegates for a seat at the table. One, or more, of them will be “talked to” by THE GOP POWER STRUCTURE – and they WILL toe the line.
You can count on it.
btw – many of the GOP power structure have never been elected – but they HAVE served in Senior positions in previous republican administrations.

carolina- You seem to have missed the fact

Scope (Diary) Tuesday, February 28th at 8:15PM EDT (link)

that this isn’t your grandfather’s GOP election. There is a fight, to the death, between the establishment and anti-establishment. Have you been asleep during the Tea Party rebellion? Yea Romney has the support of the establishment Republicans, so please describe to me how the establishment wins out, when the voters have been saying no since 2010.

Only in Your Heads

lapert Tuesday, February 28th at 8:20PM EDT (link)

Yeah, there is a fight to the death in the heads of some – not the reality for the actual principal actors in the party.

It is requires an extremely naive understanding of politics to think that there is any realistic chance of someone other than the declared candidates winning the nomination. And every one of the current declared candidates is part of the establishment (even Ron Paul exists squarely within the established political world – if mostly in the role as nuisance)

scope - only a few people are paying detailed attention

to this primary, much less to the intricate internal party politics. I’m just observing how the primary voters are actually voting.
The Romney machine keeps on rolling because a lot of voters just don’t have the time/interest to take a chance on someone besides Romeny.
What % of the primary voters belong to a local Tea party? (10 – 15%?)
How many Tea party supporters are voting for Romney? (40 – 50%?)
I’m glad the other candidates have pushed Romney a little more to the right, but I still don’t like him myself.
I’m just trying to be realistic.
In addition, none of these gung-ho politicians will have anything to do after the primary. They are all ‘retired’. Of course any/all of them would jump at the chance to have something to do in the Romney administration (if he beats BO).

Here we go with another Newt

Scope (Diary) Tuesday, February 28th at 8:21PM EDT (link)

going off the rails in a speech, trying to talk about trees and there velocity when they fall down. This is absolutely why Gingrich will never win the nomination. He gets so far into the weeds he loses any attention factor. We had Romney talking about trees being the right height in MI. Now we have Newt describing about how trees hit or don’t houses, depending on if they are dead or not, in yet another professor lesson, also known as a candidates speech for the presidency.

I am not sure

tomrt (Diary) Tuesday, February 28th at 9:26PM EDT (link)

Newt was aware of CNN cutting in to his speech. He was obviously setting up his speech with a light-hearted story, but it seemed that he wasn’t aware that it was being aired on CNN.
