Daily Links – May 22, 2012

Today is May 22nd. On this date in 1813, composer Wilhelm Richard Wagner was born. Today, he is best known for Ride of the Valkyries (Ritt der Walküren) from his opera Die Walküre, which he wrote for the movie The Blues Brothers. Also born on this date, in 1859, was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes and fan of cocaine. Doyle once famously said “Any truth is better than indefinite doubt”, but I’m not so sure. On this date, in 1849, Abraham Lincoln received a patent for his floating dry dock. Take that, Millard Fillmore! And finally, today is “International Day for Biological Diversity”, in honor of which we continue to have Moe Lane on the front page. Consider this an Open Thread.

    Just heard on local radio that Gov. McDonnell signed a bill that bars any VA LEO from indefinately detaining any Amer. citizen who is picked up as a terrorust. Everyone knows that Anwar al Alawaki was the Imam at the Falls Church Va Mosque. He had been picked up at least once, but was released. When the heat turned up, he high tailed his arse out of the country. We know he was killed by the US in a drone strike. If he were still in VA, he would now be protected in that he couldn’t be detained indefinately. I’ve said many times that there is a very large contingent of Ron Paul supporters. How do you think Paul was the only other candidate to get on the primary ballot in VA? According to the local report, the Paulies pushed McDonnell hard to pass this legislation.

    Gov. Bob McDonnell signed the new Voter ID law in VA. He promised that every voter in VA will get a “free” voter ID card. Everyone in VA already had access to “free” voter ID cards. Every time you renew your VA driver’s license, you are given the option to sign up for a voter ID card. No one has to list their party ID on those cards. VA has an open primary. McDonnell said that with this new law, you “can” be provided with another form of voter ID when going to the polls. The card will still not be required, and you can still bring a utility bill on election day to vote. The new voter ID’s will be exactly the same as those we were already sent this year. There is no picture on them of the voter. Same thing, different day.

      What is LEO? Seems he’s going soft.

        VP pick, but many think he is some great conservative.

        LEO= Law Enforcement Officer.

          McDonnell WAS a conservative, but he clearly values the extra 10% on his approval ratings more than he wants to push things forward.

          I would take someone like Walker over McDonnell any day of the week. Better to push things as far as you can then play it safe.

          If you can’t take your political capital out for a spin sometime, what is the point of having it?

      An American citizen shouldn’t be held without charges indefinitely. Just prosecute them if they’ve committed a crime.

      System error, maybe?

      The # of ballots cast in Union County is included in total # ballots cast that is displayed on page 1…but I can’t find any other discrepancies anywhere. There aren’t enough voting totals for this county under any of the candidate’s name to even close to justifying this number of ballots in Union County.

      Good news is that it looks like Tom Cotton has gained a victory over Mary Beth Rankin!
