Open Thread: Kimmel on plastic bag ban

In the above clip, late night host Jimmy Kimmel makes fun of one of the more ridiculous examples of nanny-statism in recent memory. Leave it to California to come up with these kinds of shenanigans.

Consider this an Open Thread.

They have moved on from anti-Arizona measures to this, when they’re not spending time trying to figure out how to get voters to okay another half-billion in bonds and get in more “urban rail” we don’t need. Meanwhile the city’s energy dept is getting ready to be slammed by ratings agencies, and the city is running nearly a $1M/month in the red. But at least they told AZ off and are going to save the world by eliminating “single-use” plastic bags.

What really torques me off besides the obvious is that these bags are not “single-use” for us. We use them to pick up dog poop, in wastepaper baskets, and for take-out meals our groups serves at church.

rolls of plastic bags to carry in your car. Tear off a few and take them into the store.

Remember, the only thing dumber than stupid, lying, crooked politicians are those who vote for them.

I’m sure there will be some changes in the logo, but .. it’s a plastic bag.

Guess figuring out what to do about a $15 billion deficit isn’t urgent enough compared to the need to stop us from using those dangerous plastic bags. Morons…all of them.

    • westcoastpatriette

I’d be ticked. I love my plastic bags.

At least the paper ones are easier to set on fire after filling them with feces to place on politicians’ doorsteps!

I guess they got tired of San Francisco being the only city passing laws so extreme the state would throw them out.

… of seeing the last bags used to wrap tightly around the heads of the idiots who voted for this.

    What’s next, rubber?

    Damn control freaks.

For those of you not from WA, Seattle is run by dems with a full on euro-style-green-party ideology…

They came up with this back in 08, as a bag tax….

Car-hating radical environmentalist is essentially a requirement to be mayor of Seattle… The last mayor spent more time on national politics than he did taking care of city business, and the current one came straight from Greenpeace…

Let’s just say make SURE, if you buy meat or produce, that you double-bag it! Ewww!

That our political choices are ‘RINO vs Ronulan’ rather than ‘Greenpeace vs PETA’….

In WA, all elections except POTUS are non-partisan, so the top-2 candidates end up going to the General Election even if they’re both from the same party or ideology…

… in over a year a half. Uffda. Guess what’s going in the washing machine absolutely right this minute! Meat? Definitely still double bag that.

Paper/plastic bags are too weak. I’ve never once had a canvas bag rip, plus my grocery store gives a 20c discount for every reusable bag I use.

Libs are always for handing out free condoms.

Who gets the money for this? The store? Paper bags are the essence of sustainable bags, and decompose quickly. Last I saw from the airplane, there is no shortage of wood for paper in the world.

to do with taxes. They passed one here in Montgomery County, People’s Republic of Maryland. The county has billion dollar shortfalls as far as the eye can see. They’ve maxed out property taxes for all intents and purposes (homesteading rule limits actual tax increase rate to something like 10%/year if you’ve been in your house for more than 6 moths in the previous fiscal year), so they keep coming up with nickel and dime crap. Only good point is that it is actually starting to annoy even the Progressives who live here. I expect both the bag tax and the new ambulance fee to be on referendum soon. Especially since the county just got done with a referendum defeating the ambulance tax last election.

Haven’t noticed this before: does hulu detect your IP and offer local content? The Kimmel clip had the WTEN imprint on it and that’s my local affiliate.

It’s very easy to map an IP address to a general geographic location. A lot of sites prompt me to look at things based on an assumption that I’m located in a particular city – which is sometimes accurate, but often off by quite a ways. It’s not perfect…

Note – not all of Munroe’s work is safe for your work – browse the archives at home on your own time.

I’m not normally a big xkcd guy, but that one is particularly relevant.

  • becolt

I’ve just never noticed it being done within the video itself. Imagine the storage they must have if they’re doing this for every show on the service. Seems one would be enough lol

Guess I’ll just move along creating redundant comment threads.
